Adrenal cortical secretory responses to histamine and cyanide in dogs with hypothalamic lesions.

Experiments were performed on dogs with hypothalamic lesions as well as on intact and hypophysectomized dogs. Adrenal venous blood samples were collected and analyzed for 17-hydroxycorticosteroids (17-OHCS). In intact dogs, a marked increase in adrenal 17-OHCS secretion was observed after an i.v. injection of histamine and following an i.v. infusion of cyanide. Adrenal 17-OHCS secretion in response to histamine was markedly reduced but not completely abolished by hypophysectomy and was partially impaired by anterior median eminence lesions and by posterior median eminence lesions, but was not …

[The effect of mepyramine and 48/80 on the histamine content of pleural exudates in the rat].

The influence of pretreatment with the antihistaminic, mepyramine, or with the histamine liberator 48/80 was studied on the volume and the histamine content of pleural exudates induced in rats by intrapleural injection of turpentine, silver nitrate or carrageenan. The fluorometric determination of histamine was performed in the exudates collected at different times after injection of the irritant. In control animals the histamine levels were different from those previously found by the authors using biological assays. In rats pretreated with mepyramine or compound 48/80, the effects observed v…

A study of the vascular and acid-secretory responses of the rat gastric mucosa to histamine.

1. The effects of histamine on gastric mucosal blood flow in the presence and absence of gastric acid secretion were studied in the rat. 2. Histamine, in doses greater than those required to stimulate maximal acid secretion, caused a small increase in mucosal blood flow per unit acid output. 3. When acid secretion was inhibited by methyl analogues of prostaglandin E2, histamine reduced arterial blood pressure and gave a dose dependent rise in mucosal blood flow. 4. When acid secretion was inhibited by the histamine H2-receptor antagonists, burimamide and metiamide, histamine still increased mu…

Histamine release, pulmonary blood shunts, and rapid, shallow breathing in the dog.

Trimetaphan (Arfonad), which acts as a histamine-releasing agent in dogs, was observed to increase the shunt of blood through the lungs. Although external examination of the lungs showed no appreciable collapse, more detailed examination of lungs fixed by perfusion showed that the shunt could be explained on the basis of alveolar collapse and there was no need to postulate the opening of anatomical shunts. Histamine-releasing agents or histamine produced rapid, shallow breathing, which persisted after inflation of the lungs sufficient to restore the elastic and non-elastic resistance of the lu…
