Akabane virus (AKAV) is an orthobunyavirus transmitted by biting midges of the genus Culicoides. This virus mainly affects ruminant species and represents an important threat to animal health across the world, being distributed in regions of Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Oceania. Although adult animals usually develop subclinical infection, AKAV can cross the placental barrier producing abortions, stillbirths, and severe congenital malformations that lead to substantial economic losses. Lately, AKAV has expanded its host range to non-ruminant species such as domestic pigs and bamboo rats,

As the most abundant biological entities in the ocean, viruses of microbes play important roles in regulating host population dynamics and influencing biogeochemical cycles. Metagenomic surveys have revealed an astounding reservoir of viral genetic diversity in single-celled marine eukaryotes known as protists, but the vast majority of these viruses have not been directly observed, and information about their protist hosts remains fragmentary. The 2023 discovery of mirusviruses provides a striking example, whereby metagenomic surveys of samples collected by the Tara Oceans expedition led to th

Bacteriophages (phages) are an understudied yet pivotal component of fermentation ecosystems, with potential implications for product quality through phage-host interplay. However, the functional roles of phage communities or individual phages in Daqu (saccharifying and fermenting agent for Baijiu) remain largely unexplored. This study utilized virome analysis to investigate the composition and functional dynamics of the phage community during high-temperature Daqu (HTD) incubation. We identified Inoviridae as the dominant phage family, with most phages belonging to the Caudoviricetes class. T

Entomopathogenic fungi of the genus Beauveria are widely used biological control agents that infect diverse insect hosts and can also associate with plants as rhizosphere colonizers and endophytes. Within this genus, Beauveria bassiana is a cosmopolitan generalist, whereas Beauveria brongniartii exhibits a narrower host range, primarily targeting soil-dwelling coleopteran larvae with limited evidence of plant colonization. To explore genomic differentiation associated with this ecological divergence, the commercially exploited B. brongniartii strain BIPESCO2 and B. bassiana ATHUM 4946 were seq

Alpharetroviruses are an important group of pathogens known to cause leukemias and tumors, and were historically considered to be restricted to avian hosts. The identification of alpharetrovirus-like envelopes in bat genomes has hinted at a potentially wider host range, although their relations to modern alpharetroviruses and distribution remains unclear. Through a paleovirological screening of 818 vertebrate genomes we identified CHIRalphaEnv, a lineage that belongs firmly within alpharetroviruses, and emerged from a cross-class transmission from saurian hosts. We determine that CHIRalphaEnv

Organ-specific immune responses are shaped by tissue microenvironments, which instruct and regulate the behaviour of tissue-resident macrophages and lymphocytes. During infection, microbes are also influenced by tissue-specific environmental signals, which may influence host-microbe interactions and infection outcome. The pathogenic fungus Candida albicans undergoes significant adaptation within the host, associated with major genetic and phenotypic changes as a result of stress responses. These underlie the ability of this yeast to evade host immune responses and establish infection. Recent e

Host-pathogen interactions evolve rapidly within species, providing natural genetic resources for the identification of specific ecological interaction factors. We previously identified RNA viruses that infect the nematodes Caenorhabditis elegans and Caenorhabditis briggsae in a species-specific manner. Wild strains of both host species demonstrate ample variation in viral sensitivity. Here we use recombinant inbred lines and pool-sequencing approaches to genetically map a major resistance locus in the C. elegans MY10 strain, narrowing down its position by CRISPR/Cas9-mediated recombination an

BACKGROUND: Phages are critical components of the gut microbiome, influencing bacterial composition and function as predators, parasites, and modulators of bacterial phenotypes. Prophages, integrated forms of these phages, are prevalent in many bacterial genomes and play a role in bacterial adaptation and evolution. However, the diversity and stability of prophages within gut commensals, particularly in the genera Bacteroides and Phocaeicola, remain underexplored. This study aims to screen and characterize prophages in these genera, providing insights into their diversity, host range, and temp

The Blastocystis subtype ST10 has been recognized to contain a great deal of diversity at the sequence level, potentially indicating the presence of multiple new STs within the clade. However, the data needed to validate these new STs were not available. To help resolve this diversity, full-length small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene reference sequences were generated using Oxford Nanopore MinION long-read sequencing from 21 samples representing multiple domestic and wild hosts and geographic regions and covering the sequence diversity previously described using fragments of the SSU rRNA gene. Host-microbe interactions within the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) play a pivotal role in shaping host physiology, ecology, and life history. However, these interactions vary across gut regions due to changes in the physical environment or host immune system activity, thereby altering the microbial community. Each animal species may harbor their own unique microbial community due to host species-specific ecological traits such as dietary habits, micro-habitat preferences, and mating behavior as well as physiological traits. While the gut microbiota in wild animals has received much attention ov

Establishing the diagnosis of invasive mold infections (IMI) in immunocompromised children is challenging due to nonspecific clinical presentations and the limited sensitivity of traditional culture-based methods. Rapid non-culture-based diagnostics such as the 1,3-beta-d-glucan and galactomannan assays have emerged as promising adjuncts to conventional diagnostic tests in adults. Available data suggest that 1,3-beta-d-glucan has limited accuracy in the pediatric population and is not recommended to be used for the diagnosis of IMI in children. On the other hand, the diagnostic performance of

Salmonella is regarded as the predominant cause of foodborne illnesses worldwide, and the increase of these antimicrobial-resistant strains makes it more difficult to prevent. On this occasion, bacteriophages (phages) stand out as an alternative biocontrol agent with high efficiency and low mutation rates. Salmonella phages have confronted challenges to counteract with more than 2,500 serovars of Salmonella spp. and overcome the universality of antibiotics to different species, and thus, broad-host-range phages infecting Salmonella spp. are urgently required to realize precise poultry treatmen

Whole genomic sequencing (WGS) and comparative genomics are increasingly used in the characterization of Cryptosporidium spp. They are facilitated by the establishment of procedures for WGS analysis of clinical specimens without laboratory propagation of pathogens. Results of recent comparative genomics analysis suggest that gene duplication might be associated with broad host ranges of some zoonotic Cryptosporidium species and subtypes, while genetic recombination could be involved in the emergence of virulent subtypes. The availability of WGS data has further facilitated the development of a

Olfaction is a pivotal sense for insects and granivorous pests may exploit grain volatiles for food selection. Tribolium confusum, is a secondary pest of stored cereals that benefits from primary pests' infestation, as other secondary feeders, triggering competition. This study aimed to evaluate the preferences of T. confusum females toward different-infested paddy rice, highlighting the impact of intra- and interspecific competition. Tribolium confusum showed positive chemotaxis toward rice infested by larvae of a primary pest (Sitophilus zeamais), but not for grain attacked by adults alone.

Malaria parasites of the genus Plasmodium are diverse in mammal hosts, infecting five mammalian orders in the Old World, but were long considered absent from the diverse deer family (Cervidae) and from New World mammals. There was a description of a Plasmodium parasite infecting a single splenectomized white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus) in 1967 but none have been reported since, which has proven a challenge to our understanding of malaria parasite biogeography. Using both microscopy and polymerase chain reaction, we screened a large sample of native and captive ungulate species fr

Babesiosis is an emerging tick-transmitted zoonosis in large parts of the world. In Sweden, the occurrence and diversity of Babesia species is largely unknown. In order to estimate the exposure to Babesia from infected ticks, we collected questing Ixodes ricinus from several sites across southern Sweden during two consecutive field seasons and investigated the occurrence of Babesia species. We report for the first time the occurrence of the zoonotic species Babesia venatorum in Swedish ticks, with a prevalence of 1%. We also detected B. microti (prevalence 3.2%) and B. divergens (prevalence 0.

Ralstonia solanacearum is known to be the most prominent causal agent of bacterial wilt worldwide. It has a wide host range comprising solanaceous and nonsolanaceous plants. Typical symptoms of the disease are leaf wilt, browning of vascular tissues, and collapsing of the plant. With the objective of studying the diversity of pathogens causing bacterial wilt in West Bengal, we collected samples of diseased symptomatic crops and adjacent symptomatic and asymptomatic weeds from widespread locations in West Bengal. By means of a routine molecular identification test specific to "R. solanacearum s

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a mosquito-borne zoonotic viral disease affecting domestic and wild ruminants, camels and humans. The causative agent of RVF, the RVF virus (RVFV), has the capacity to cause large and severe outbreaks in animal and human populations and to cross significant natural geographic barriers. Rift Valley fever is usually inapparent in non-pregnant adult animals, but pregnant animals and newborns can be severely affected; outbreaks are characterised by a sudden onset of abortions and high neonatal mortality. The majority of human infections are subclinical or associated with

Bats are found to be the natural reservoirs for many emerging viruses. In most cases, severe clinical signs caused by such virus infections are normally not seen in bats. This indicates differences in the virus-host interactions and underlines the necessity to develop natural host related models to study these phenomena. Due to the strict protection of European bat species, immortalized cell lines are the only alternative to investigate the innate anti-virus immune mechanisms. Here, we report about the establishment and functional characterization of Myotis myotis derived cell lines from diffe

Blastocystis hominis (B. hominis) is a cosmopolitan pro- tozoa which parasitizes the human large intestine. This parasite had been considered to be commensal of the large intestine for a long time, because even an intense invasion may be asymptomatic. However, this species is now being regarded as a parasitic organism. In this paper the latest data concerning the epidemiology, diagnostics and treatment of B. hominis invasion have been cited and discussed.
