Dynamic adsorption behavior of bio-based adsorbent for multicomponent wastewater.

The co-occurrence of chemically diverse contaminants-including organic dyes, solvents, engineered nanoparticles, and nanoplastics in wastewater and receiving water bodies poses a significant challenge to water resource quality and ecosystem health. Understanding and mitigating the fate and transport of such mixed contaminants require process-oriented, quantitative investigations of their interactions with advanced remediation materials. In this study, we developed a bio-based multifunctional adsorbent by functionalizing natural kapok hollow fibers (KT) with polyethyleneimine (PEI) and subseque

Mixing intensity regulates kitchen waste anaerobic digestion through carbon flux and nitrogen metabolic pathways.

Based on previous work on flow pattern dimensionality reduction, the control constant k was used to establish a quantitative bridge between the macro-hydraulic field and the micro-metabolic mechanism. Three impeller configurations with impeller diameter ratios of 0.4, 0.7, and 0.9, corresponding to control constant k of 33.3, 11.6, and 8.3, respectively, were selected for continuous anaerobic digestion of kitchen waste. At an organic loading rate of 2.5 g VS/L/d, the average methane production rates of the reactors with impeller diameter ratios of 0.7, 0.9, and 0.4 were 418.9, 363.7, and 356.5

Comparison of Leptosira concentrations in two rivers within contrasting catchments in a leptospirosis hotspot.

Leptospirosis is a neglected disease that primarily impacts small islands in the South Pacific region. We compared pathogenic Leptospira concentration in rivers from two contrasting catchments in New Caledonia, a leptospirosis hot spot. The Tho and Foa catchments are located on the humid east coast and on the drier west coast, respectively. Similar concentrations of pathogenic Leptospira (pL) were found in both catchments although no extreme events were sampled in Foa and two cyclones were sampled in Tho. Moreover, significant pL concentrations were found in Foa during a 25 mm rainfall event a

Contaminated stormwater sediment source tracking for polychlorinated biphenyls in an urban watershed of the Chesapeake Bay, United States.

Fine-grained sediment in stormwater acts as a vector for persistent organic pollutants, like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), through mobilization from sources within drainage areas of impacted urban watersheds. This study implemented a novel approach to identify the relative contributions of various landscape and stream sources of sediment from the Back River watershed in eastern Baltimore, Maryland, and investigated the applicability of using trace PCBs found in an urban environment as discriminants between each source type. Trace PCBs were found to be poor discriminants when identifying th

Stable carbon and hydrogen isotope analysis applied to follow the anaerobic biodegradation of trimethylbenzenes in groundwater.

Trimethylbenzene (TMB) isomers (1,2,3-TMB, 1,2,4-TMB, 1,3,5-TMB) are used as conservative tracers of alkylbenzenes in contaminated aquifers, but their resistance to anaerobic biodegradation remains uncertain. In this study, TMB degradation was investigated using enrichment cultures in microcosms under denitrifying, iron-, manganese- and sulfate-reducing conditions. Evidence for TMB biodegradation was gathered using concentration measurements, metabolites identification and multi-elemental compound specific isotope analysis (ME-CSIA). Degradation was >80 % under all anaerobic conditions and fol

Removal of Fe(II) from water using raw and calcinated weathered basalt: Influence of mineralogy and physical properties.

In this study, raw weathered basalt (RWB) and calcinated weathered basalt (CWB), both low-cost natural geological materials, were employed for the removal of Fe(II) from contaminated aqueous solutions and groundwater. CWB was prepared by calcining RWB at 900 °C for 3 h. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted, and the data fitted best with the Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion models. Although calcination improved the surface area and porosity, RWB exhibited higher Fe(II) removal efficiency, likely due to its rich
