Catalytic oxidation of SCN- and CN- ions from aqueous solutions.

Oxidation of inorganic contaminants, such as thiocyanate and cyanide ions, by ozone in water has improved significantly in the presence of solid catalysts based on nickel and cobalt oxides supported on alumina. It can be considered that the hydroxyl radical produced by catalytic decomposition of ozone over the catalyst's surface was responsible for the oxidation of the adsorbed ions. Ozonation efficiency was increased by 20% in the presence of catalytic systems in particular for those systems containing both nickel and cobalt oxide.

Photochemical Chain Scissions Enhance Polyethylene Glycol Biodegradability: from Probabilistic Modeling to Experimental Demonstration.

Polyethylene glycols (PEGs), a major class of water-soluble polymers (WSPs), are widely used in diverse applications, from which PEGs may be released into the environment. This work investigates the effect of PEG reaction with photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals (•OH), an important environmental oxidant, on the molecular weight (MW) distribution of PEGs and their subsequent biodegradation in soil and sediment. Monte Carlo simulations demonstrated a pronounced decrease in the PEG MW after only a few •OH-reaction-induced chain scissions on initial PEG molecules. The simulation results wer…

Functional group-directed electron shuttling by adsorbed humic acid exciting nontarget reactions and their enhancement non-radical oxidation in H2O2-based aquifer remediation.

Nontarget reactions (NTRs) have long been considered a major barrier to the efficiency and sustainability of in situ chemical oxidation (ISC … NTRs as parasitic scavengers of reactive oxygen species, they also promote the generation of target hydroxyl radicals (∙OH), as directly verified by quenching experiments and EPR spectroscopy. Electrochemical analyses confirm that HA mediates direct electron transfer (DET) between MT and H2O2, leading to interfacial ∙OH formation. The electron-shuttling efficiency …

Kinetic study of isoprene hydroxy hydroperoxide radicals reacting with sulphur dioxide and their global-scale impact on sulphate formation.

Isoprene is the most relevant volatile organic compound emitted during the biosynthesis of metabolism processes. The oxidation of isoprene by a hydroxy radical (OH) is one of the main consumption schemes that generate six isomers of isoprene hydroxy hydroperoxide radicals (ISOPOOs). In this study, the rate constants of ISOPOOs + sulphur dioxide (SO2) reactions that eventually generate sulphur trioxide (SO3), the precursor of sulphate aerosol (SO42-(p)), are determined using microcanonical kinetic theories coupled with molecular structures and energies estimated by quantum chemical calculations

Interactions of copper and copper chelate compounds with the amyloid beta peptide: An investigation into electrochemistry, reactive oxygen species and peptide aggregation.

Alzheimer's disease is a fatal neurological disorder affecting millions of people worldwide with an increasing patient population as average life expectancy increases. Accumulation of amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques is characteristic of the disease and has been the target of numerous failed clinical trials. In light of this, therapeutics that target mechanisms of neuronal death beyond Aβ aggregation are needed. One potential target is the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are created during an interaction between Aβ and copper ions. This work shows that ROS production can be slowed by

In vitro anti-oxidative activities of the various parts of Parkia biglobosa and GC-MS analysis of extracts with high activity.

The anti-oxidative activities of sequentially extracted solvent fractions of different parts of P. biglobosa were evaluated in a series of in vitro assays. Our findings indicated that all extracts had electron donating and free radical scavenging activities. But the ethanol (EtOH) extracts from all the parts demonstrated more promising anti-oxidative effects in these experimental models. Apart from the aqueous extracts of the stem bark and leaves, all other extracts exhibited hydroxyl radical scavenging (HRS) activity but the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extract of the stem bark and EtOH extracts of …

Intensification of sonochemical degradation of antibiotics levofloxacin using carbon tetrachloride.

Sonochemical degradation of levofloxacin was investigated to assess the operational parameters and the impacts of rate enhancers (CCl(4)) and rate inhibitors (t-butanol). Different dosages of CCl(4), pH value of solutions, ultrasonic power, and initial concentration of levofloxacin which affected the degradation of levofloxacin were studied. The degradation rate of levofloxacin was accelerated with increased concentrations of CCl(4) via the accumulation of reactive chlorine species and the hindrance of ()OH radical combination reactions with atomic hydrogen. The addition of t-butanol at all te

Role of Fenton chemistry in thiol-induced toxicity and apoptosis.

Under certain conditions, many radioprotective thiols can be toxic, causing loss of colony-forming ability in cultured mammalian cells in a biphasic fashion whereby the thiols are not toxic at high or low concentrations of the drug, but cause decreased clonogenicity at intermediate (0.2-1.0 mM) drug levels. This symposium paper summarizes our studies using dithiothreitol (DTT) as a model thiol to demonstrate the role of Fenton chemistry in thiol toxicity. The toxicity of DTT in V79 cells has several characteristics: it is dependent on the medium used during exposure of cells to the drug; the t

Box-modelling of HOx in Mexico City.

This study presents an analysis of hydroxyl (OH) and hydroperoxyl (HO2) radicals collectively referred to as HOx and their role in atmospheric chemistry within the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA). HOx radicals are paramount to the oxidative capacity of the atmosphere driving the formation of secondary pollutants such as ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosols (SOA). A 0-D chemical box model (AtChem-2) was employed to simulate in situ production of OH and HO2 constrained by measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx), O3, and other trace gases along with mete

Nitric oxide precipitates catastrophic chromosome fragmentation by bolstering both hydrogen peroxide and Fe(II) Fenton reactants in E. coli.

Immune cells kill invading microbes by producing reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, primarily hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and nitric oxide (NO). We previously found that NO inhibits catalases in Escherichia coli, stabilizing H2O2 around treated cells and promoting catastrophic chromosome fragmentation via continuous Fenton reactions generating hydroxyl radicals. Indeed, H2O2-alone treatment kills catalase-deficient (katEG) mutants similar to H2O2+NO treatment. However, the Fenton reaction, in addition to H2O2, requires Fe(II), which H2O2 excess instantly converts into Fenton-inert Fe(III). For…

Ozone and chlorine reactions with dissolved organic matter - Assessment of oxidant-reactive moieties by optical measurements and the electron donating capacities.

Oxidation processes are impacted by the type, concentration and reactivity of the dissolved organic matter (DOM). In this study, the reactions between various types of DOM (Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA), Nordic Reservoir NOM (NNOM) and Pony Lake fulvic acid (PLFA)) and two oxidants (ozone and chlorine) were studied in the pH range 2-9 by using a combination of optical measurements and electron donating capacities. The relationships between residual electron donating capacity (EDC) and residual absorbance showed a strong pH dependence for the ozone-DOM reactions with phenolic functional gro

Kinetics of the hydride reduction of an NAD(+) analogue by isopropyl alcohol in aqueous and acetonitrile solutions: solvent effects, deuterium isotope effects, and mechanism.

The rate constants of the hydride-transfer reactions from isopropyl alcohol (i-PrOH) to an NAD(+) model, 9-phenylxanthylium ion (PhXn(+)), in acetonitrile (AN) and in water containing AN (80% H(2)O/20% AN) were determined over a temperature range from 36 to 67 degrees C. The reactions follow second-order rate laws. In the latter solution, formation of the water adduct of PhXn(+) was observed as a side-equilibrium (K). The observed inverse solvent kinetic isotope effect (k(H(2)O)(obs)/k(D(2)O)(obs) = 0.54), the larger than unity equilibrium isotope effect (K(H(2)O)/K(D(2)O) = 2.69), and the res

Kinetic study on ESR signal decay of nitroxyl radicals, potent redox probes for in vivo ESR spectroscopy, caused by reactive oxygen species.

The effect of the chemical structure of nitroxyl spin probes on the rate at which ESR signals are lost in the presence of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was examined. When the spin probes were reacted with either hydroxyl radical (.OH) or superoxide anion radical (O(2)(.-)) in the presence of cysteine or NADH, the probes lost ESR signal depending on both their ring structure and substituents. Pyrrolidine nitroxyl probes were relatively resistant to the signal decay caused by O(2)(.-) with cysteine/NADH. Signal decay rates for these reactions correlated with reported redox potentials of the nitr…

A selective fluorimetric method for the determination of some 1,4-benzodiazepine drugs containing a hydroxyl group at C-3.

A highly selective and sensitive fluorimetric method was developed for the determination of four 1,4-benzodiazepine drugs containing a hydroxyl group at carbon 3, namely oxazepam, lorazepam, cinolazepam and temazepam. The method is highly specific because other benzodiazepinee lacking the hydroxyl group at C-3 do not react similarly and hence do not interfere. The proposed method involves reduction of the target compound using Zno/HCl at room temperature with the formation of a highly fluorescent derivative within 15 min. The different experimental parameters were carefully studied and incorpo
