The effect of target speed on perception of visual motion direction in a patient with akinetopsia.

Although much research has been devoted to the neural correlates of motion perception, the processing of speed of motion is still a topic of discussion. Apart from patient LM, no in-depth clinical research has been done in the past 20 years on this topic. In the present study, we investigated patient TD, who suffered from the rare disorder akinetopsia due to bilateral lesions of V5 after stroke. By means of a Random-Dot-Kinematogram (RDK) in which speed was varied systematically, it was found that TD was impaired in perceiving the direction of movement at speeds exceeding 9 deg/s. Our study su

Temporal Characteristics of EEG Microstates Mediate Trial-by-Trial Risk Taking.

People seem to have difficulties when perceiving events whose outcome has no influence on the outcome of future events. This illusion that patterns exist where there are none may lead to adverse consequences, such as escalating losses in financial trading or gambling debt. Despite the enormous social consequences of these cognitive biases, however, their neural underpinnings are poorly understood. Attempts to investigate them have so far relied on evoked neural activity, whereas spontaneous brain activity has been treated as noise to be averaged out. Here, we focus on the spontaneous electroen

Models cannot predict future outbreaks: A/H1N1 virus, the paradigm.

Evolution of the industrialized society had led to a risk management policy in many domains. Assessment of health care risk in the case of infectious diseases often includes mathematical models. Results of modelling were used in France to design emergency plans against flu pandemic. We believe that models cannot predict the features of the future outbreaks because the intrinsic properties of an emergent pathogen and the ecosystem in which it is developing are very complex. Of course, prediction of future outbreaks is not possible without using models, but we think that it is an illusion to pre

Attentional bias induced by viewing actual or illusory movements.

OBJECTIVE: To learn to which portions of a line normal subjects would attend when watching this line actually moving or when perceiving movement even in the absence of actual movement, an illusory movement. METHODS: Twenty normal subjects watched a computer monitor on which either lines or dots moved to the right or left. They also watched stationary lines, which appeared to be moving to the left or right because the background was moving in the opposite direction. While watching these lines or dots, their eye movements were monitored to determine the position of fixation. RESULTS: Overall,

Contralateral induction by frequency spectrum in hallucinating schizophrenics.

Seventeen schizophrenic patients who had all experienced auditory hallucinations were compared with 14 subjects of a reference group on a test of contralateral induction. Contralateral induction means that a sound is illusively heard as coming from a location where it belongs according to its spectral content. The phenomenon is connected with a simultaneous relative elimination of masking. The schizophrenic subjects deviated from the reference group in several aspects. Some of them did not hear the sound being induced to the contralateral side, which it was for all reference subjects. Another

No safe place: parental alcoholism and adolescent suicide.

A child growing up in an alcoholic home develops either little self-consolidation (I-ness) and efficacy (I can) or a distorted self (I am insignificant). This results in a desperate search for a soothing-object (We-ness). The sadomasochistic behaviors, which a youth witnesses and is subjected to, become internalized as survival skills, but ultimately fail. These factors set the stage for a destructive modus operandi. When there is peer group attachment pressure, this teen does not find security when questioning, "Who am I?" because there is no "I" and no "We". Instead, this adolescent experien

The "empty sella" in childhood.

The "empty sella" (ES), a common entity in adults, is so named because a cerebrospinal fluid-filled arachnoid hernia fills the pituitary fossa and compresses the pituitary gland, creating the illusion of an "empty" sella. We report our experience of ES in childhood. Our four cases represent associations with ES that have not been previously described in childhood: case 1 was associated with central precocious puberty; case 2 with secondary ES resulting from shrinkage of a prolactinoma during bromocriptine therapy; case 3 with pseudotumor cerebri; and case 4 with no significant pathology. Intuitive physics: the straight-down belief and its origin.

This study examines the nature and origin of a common misconception about moving objects. We first show through the use of pencil-and-paper problems that many people erroneously believe that an object that is carried by another moving object (e.g., a ball carried by a walking person) will, if dropped, fall to the ground in a straight vertical line. (In fact, such an object will fall forward in a parabolic arc.) We then demonstrate that this "straight-down belief" turns up not only on pencil-and-paper problems but also on a problem presented in a concrete, dynamic fashion (Experiment 1) and in

Understanding and simulating border ownership centered segmentation.

Border ownership is a critical component of biological vision systems, enabling object segmentation and figure-ground organization. Understanding border ownership-centered segmentation is essential for advancing vision neuroscience and computer vision. In our prior work, "Border Ownership, Category Selectivity, and Beyond" (Chen et al., 2022)6, we introduced a channel-based representation for coding border ownership and category selectivity. Building on this foundation, this paper addresses the remaining challenges in border ownership-centered segmentation. We explore binocular disparity repre

Surgical management of double lip: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Double lip is a rare developmental anomaly that mainly affects the upper lip. It is characterised by the presence of excess hyperplastic tissue that gives an illusion of double organ. It may occur independently or as a component of a set of defects, mainly in Ascher's syndrome, which presentes with blepharochalasis, non-toxic thyroid enlargement and double upper lip. The aim of this article is the presentation of a case report. CASE REPORT: The case of a 15-year-old patient with double lip treated surgically for cosmetic reasons is reported. An investigation of approach behaviour in Prolonged Grief.

Prolonged Grief (PG) is recognized as a potentially debilitating post-bereavement syndrome. Theoretical models of PG highlight the importance of both approach and avoidance behaviours in maintaining the syndrome. Research to date has focussed primarily on investigating avoidance in response to loss reminders. Comparatively few studies have indexed approach behaviours in PG. We use a quasi-experimental paradigm to simultaneously examine approach and avoidance behaviours to reminders of the deceased. Fifty-five bereaved individuals with and without PG responded to stimuli showing the deceased's

Treatment of vestibular disorders with weak asymmetric base-in prisms: An hypothesis with a focus on Ménière's disease.

BACKGROUND: Regular treatments of Ménière's disease (MD) vary largely, and no single satisfactory treatment exists. A complementary treatment popular among Dutch and Belgian patients involves eyeglasses with weak asymmetric base-in prisms, with a perceived high success rate. An explanatory mechanism is, however, lacking. OBJECTIVE: To speculate on a working mechanism explaining an effectiveness of weak asymmetric base-in prims in MD, based on available knowledge. METHODS: After describing the way these prisms are prescribed using a walking test and its effect reported on, we give an explanat

Problem Gambling and the Youth-to-Adulthood Transition: Assessing Problem Gambling Severity Trajectories in a Sample of Young Adults.

In this study, using four wave longitudinal data, we examined problem gambling severity trajectories in a sample of young adults. Using latent growth curve modeling, we examined how initial level of problem gambling severity and the rate of change were affected by 11 time-invariant predictors: gender, age of onset of gambling, experiencing a big win early in gambling career, experiencing a big loss early in gambling career, alcohol dependence, drug dependence, anxiety, depression, perceived social support, illusion of control, and impulsiveness. Five of the eleven predictors affected initial l

Unidirectional visual motion adaptation induces reciprocal inhibition of human early visual cortex excitability.

OBJECTIVES: Behavioural observations provided by the waterfall illusion suggest that motion perception is mediated by a comparison of responsiveness of directional selective neurones. These are proposed to be optimally tuned for motion detection in different directions. Critically however, despite the behavioural observations, direct evidence of this relationship at a cortical level in humans is lacking. By utilising the state dependant properties of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), one can probe the excitability of specific neuronal populations using the perceptual phenomenon of phosp

Detection of visual events along the apparent motion trace in patients with paranoid schizophrenia.

Dysfunctional prediction in sensory processing has been suggested as a possible causal mechanism in the development of delusions in patients with schizophrenia. Previous studies in healthy subjects have shown that while the perception of apparent motion can mask visual events along the illusory motion trace, such motion masking is reduced when events are spatio-temporally compatible with the illusion, and, therefore, predictable. Here we tested the hypothesis that this specific detection advantage for predictable target stimuli on the apparent motion trace is reduced in patients with paranoid

[Vertigo treatment according to their mechanisms].

Vertigo is an illusion of rotatory or linear movement that demonstrates a functional or lesional disturbance of the vestibular system, from periphery to central connections. According to the ANAES report (1997), benign paroxysmal positional vertical vertigo, vestibular neuronitis and Ménière's disease account for 40-50% of all mixed vertigo etiologies. Central etiologies may account for 20-40% of causes and 10-40% remain more difficult to classify, and are usually classified under the term of "peripheral vestibulopathy." These include vertigo due to neurovascular compression syndrome of the VI

Approach to the dizzy patient.

As dizziness can be caused by so many different pathophysiological mechanisms, it is crucial to determine the type of dizziness before proceeding with the diagnostic evaluation. Vertigo, defined as an illusion of movement, is an important subtype of dizziness that indicates a lesion somewhere within the vestibular system. Probably the most useful feature for differentiating between peripheral and central causes of vertigo is the associated symptoms. Vertigo of peripheral origin is typically associated with auditory symptoms such as hearing loss and tinnitus, while vertigo of central origin is

Depth psychological and cultural-ethological aspects in connection with alcoholism.

Various hypotheses as to the definition, cause and consequence of alcoholism have been put forward over the years, but they have only resulted in general confusion. The files of approximately 200 patients from private and State hospitals and mental institutions were therefore examined in an attempt to view the problem without bias. Alcoholics were defined as belonging to one of the following groups : those for whom drink is a primary pleasure, those for whom it is an escape from problems, and a smaller third group with some organic biochemical factor, in which alcohol acts as a release mechani
