DePerio: Innovative Deep Learning-Based Framework for Periodontal Disease Diagnosis and Severity Evaluation Using Saliva Samples.

Recent research has identified salivary oral polymorphonuclear neutrophils (oPMNs) as reliable cellular biomarkers for monitoring the progression of periodontal disease (PD). While conventional diagnostic tools such as periodontal probing and radiographic imaging are effective at detecting advanced disease stages, they lack the sensitivity required for early diagnosis. oPMNs, derived from circulating white blood cells (WBCs), transmigrate through the oral epithelium and appear in saliva with diverse morphological characteristics. Although deep learning-based WBC quantification has been extensi

A lightweight GhostYOLO framework with GhostDynamic Module and multi-scale attention for thyroid nodule diagnosis.

Ultrasound is the primary tool for thyroid nodule assessment, but diagnostic accuracy and efficiency require improvement. This study aims to develop a high-performance, computationally efficient deep learning model for thyroid nodule detection. We propose GhostYOLO, a novel framework based on YOLOv11. It incorporates a GhostDynamic Module to reduce complexity and a Multi-Scale Attention (MSAttention) mechanism to improve feature extraction across varying nodule sizes. The model was trained and evaluated on a large internal dataset of 12,385 ultrasound images from 3,140 patients and validated o

CMIS: A Class-Aware Multi-Structure Instance Segmentation Model for Fetal Brain Ultrasound Images With Fuzzy Region-Based Constraints.

Fetal anatomical structure segmentation in ultrasound images is essential for biometric measurement and disease diagnosis. However, current methods focus on a specific plane or a few structures, whereas obstetricians diagnose by considering multiple structures from different planes. In addition, existing methods struggle with segmenting fuzzy regions, which leads to performance degradation. We propose a real-time segmentation method called Class-aware Multi-structure Instance Segmentation (CMIS), designed to segment 19 key structures in 3 fetal brain planes to support brain-disease diagnosis.

SparseXMIL: Leveraging sparse convolutions for context-aware and memory-efficient classification of whole slide images in digital pathology.

The computer analysis of Whole Slide Images (WSIs) has become increasingly prevalent in pathology-based diagnosis, although their analysis still presents considerable challenges due to the voluminous nature of the data. To address this issue, Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) has emerged as a viable approach in which WSIs are partitioned into tiles for processing. Nevertheless, previous MIL methodologies inadequately capture the essential spatial context between tiles, which is imperative for accurate diagnosis across various diseases. In parallel, approaches based on adapting Convolutional Neu

Quantification of mitral regurgitation: from traditional methods to artificial intelligence.

Mitral regurgitation (MR) is a common valvular disorder and associated with adverse outcomes. Echocardiography is the primary imaging modality for MR assessment; however, standard methods rely on geometric assumptions and single-frame analysis, which are especially inaccurate in the setting of eccentric, multiple or non-holosystolic jets. Recent developments in machine learning have enabled automated quantification of MR, which analyse regurgitant flow throughout systole, account for non-hemispheric orifice area and jet morphology, and demonstrate favourable agreement with cardiac magnetic res

Automated Detection of Vocalizations in Laryngeal Videostroboscopy.

The glottal area (GA) analysis during vocal fold vibration has garnered significant attention in phonatory medicine. Clinicians can obtain quantitative vocal fold characteristics that enhance diagnostic accuracy by examining endoscopic images captured during phonation. We propose an automated computational system for videostroboscopy that leverages spectrograms and cosine similarity techniques. This system efficiently identifies vocalization areas that warrant further analysis. Our Voice Activity Detection (VAD) method demonstrates over 97% precision and recall based on 5-fold cross-validation

GRAPHITE: Graph-based interpretable tissue examination for enhanced explainability in breast cancer histopathology.

Explainable AI (XAI) in medical histopathology is essential for enhancing the interpretability and clinical trustworthiness of deep learning models in cancer diagnosis. However, the black-box nature of these models often limits their clinical adoption. We introduce GRAPHITE (Graph-based Interpretable Tissue Examination), a post-hoc explainable framework designed for breast cancer tissue microarray (TMA) analysis. GRAPHITE employs a multiscale approach, extracting patches at various magnification levels, constructing an hierarchical graph, and utilising graph attention networks (GAT) with scale

Hierarchical Vision Transformers for prostate biopsy grading: Towards bridging the generalization gap.

Practical deployment of Vision Transformers in computational pathology has largely been constrained by the sheer size of whole-slide images. Transformers faced a similar limitation when applied to long documents, and Hierarchical Transformers were introduced to circumvent it. This work explores the capabilities of Hierarchical Vision Transformers for prostate cancer grading in WSIs and presents a novel technique to combine attention scores smartly across hierarchical transformers. Our best-performing model matches state-of-the-art algorithms with a 0.916 quadratic kappa on the Prostate cANcer

Diagnostic text-guided representation learning in hierarchical classification for pathological whole slide image.

With the development of digital imaging in medical microscopy, artificial intelligent-based analysis of pathological whole slide images (WSIs) provides a powerful tool for cancer diagnosis. Limited by the expensive cost of pixel-level annotation, current research primarily focuses on representation learning with slide-level labels, showing success in various downstream tasks. However, given the diversity of lesion types and the complex relationships between each other, these techniques still deserve further exploration in addressing advanced pathology tasks. To this end, we introduce the conce

Real-Time Ultrasound Diagnosis of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip Using an Attention-Enhanced YOLOv11 Model.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a common pediatric orthopedic disorder that can lead to lifelong disability if undetected. Ultrasound is the primary diagnostic modality but is subject to operator dependence and inter-observer variability. To address this challenge, we propose an attention-enhanced YOLOv11 framework for automated DDH classification. A dataset of 6,075 hip ultrasound images was preprocessed with augmentation and dimensionality reduction via UMAP. The model integrates Cross-Stage Partial (CSP) modules and C2PSA spatial attention to improve feature extraction, and was

Artificial intelligence in panoramic radiography interpretation: a glimpse into the state-of-the-art radiologic examination method.

AIM: Panoramic radiography is a frequently utilized imaging technique in standard dental examinations and provides many advantages. In this context, studies have been conducted to develop tools to assist physicians in clinical practice by using deep learning models to interpret panoramic radiography images. However, studies in the existing literature have generally addressed these conditions separately, and studies that develop a multiclass diagnostic charting model that can detect and segment all these conditions are very limited. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to develop a deep

Detection of Diabetic Retinopathy Using Discrete Wavelet-Based Center-Symmetric Local Binary Pattern and Statistical Features.

Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system assists ophthalmologists in early diabetic retinopathy (DR) detection by automating the analysis of retinal images, enabling timely intervention and treatment. This paper introduces a novel CAD system based on the global and multi-resolution analysis of retinal images. As a first step, we enhance the quality of the retinal images by applying a sequence of preprocessing techniques, which include the median filter, contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE), and the unsharp filter. These preprocessing steps effectively eliminate noise and enhan

Deep learning approaches for automated classification of neonatal lung ultrasound with assessment of human-to-AI interrater agreement.

Neonatal respiratory disorders pose significant challenges in clinical settings, often requiring rapid and accurate diagnostic solutions for effective management. Lung ultrasound (LUS) has emerged as a promising tool to evaluate respiratory conditions in neonates. This evaluation is mainly based on the interpretation of visual patterns (horizontal artifacts, vertical artifacts, and consolidations). Automated interpretation of these patterns can assist clinicians in their evaluations. However, developing AI-based solutions for this purpose is challenging, primarily due to the lack of annotated
