Youth psychopathy: Differential correlates of callous-unemotional traits, narcissism, and impulsivity.

Research supports the validity of the dimensional approach to psychopathy in both children and adults. The occurrence of severe aggressive and antisocial behavior in combination with callous-unemotional traits (CU traits) designates a group of children that is particularly at risk to develop psychopathy. However, most studies did not investigate the role of the remaining psychopathy dimensions (i.e. narcissism and impulsivity) in comparison. The present text reviews the newest developments in the dimensional study of psychopathy in relation to cognition, behavior and affect in clinical and det

Associations between plasma glucose and DSM-III-R cluster B personality traits in psychiatric outpatients.

Associations between personality traits, measured with the Karolinska Scales of Personality, the Impulsiveness subscale from the Impulsiveness, Venturesomeness and Empathy (IVE) Inventory, and with self-assessed personality traits and disorders (SCID-II Screen Questionnaire), and plasma insulin, glucagon and glucose, respectively, were explored in a sample of 101 psychiatric outpatients of both sexes. No relationships between the peptide hormones and personality measures were found. However, fasting glucose values, which were all essentially within the normal biological variation, were signifi

On the Processes Underlying the Relationship Between Alexithymia and Gambling Severity.

A great number of individuals with persistent problematic gambling behavior exhibit alexithymic tendencies, greater impulsivity, impaired working memory and poor mood. However, the relationship between these cognitive, affective and personality factors in problem gambling remains poorly understood. Our aim was to investigate multiple pathways of the alexithymia and problem gambling relationship. One hundred and six male subjects with different levels of gambling problem severity were recruited. Alexithymia, impulsivity and verbal working memory were evaluated, and their relationships to disord

Violence and serotonin: influence of impulse control, affect regulation, and social functioning.

There has been much interest in the role of serotonin in aggressive behavior during the past two decades, but no simple one-to-one causal relationship has been found between this biological variable and aggression. The influence of serotonin is best analyzed within a broader framework that includes consideration of its role in the inhibition of impulses, the regulation of emotions and social functioning, domains that are closely linked to aggression. Impulsivity and strong emotional states often accompany violent acts. Aggressive individuals are likely to experience general difficulties with i

Comparison of Behavioral Changes and Brain Activity between Adolescents with Internet Gaming Disorder and Student Pro-Gamers.

While pro-gamers play according to defined living habits and planned schedules, adolescents with internet gaming disorder (IGD) exhibit irregular lifestyles and unregulated impulsive gaming behavior. Fourteen IGD adolescents and 12 pro-gaming students participated in this study. At baseline and after one year, demographic data, the Child Behavior Check List (CBCL), depressed mood, anxiety, and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging were assessed. Over the year, IGD adolescents played games as per their usual schedule, while pro-gamer students played according to their school's tea

Benefits of EEG-Neurofeedback on the Modulation of Impulsivity in a Sample of Cocaine and Heroin Long-Term Abstinent Inmates: A Pilot Study.

The aim of this pilot study was to assess whether neurofeedback (NFB) can be useful in the treatment of impulsive behavior in long-term abstinent cocaine and heroin addicts. A single-blind sham-controlled NFB protocol was carried out to assess the effects of NFB on impulsivity in 20 (10 + 10) cocaine and heroin long-term abstinent addicts (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders [4th ed., text rev.; DSM-IV-TR]). Psychotic and neurologic diseases were excluded. Participants underwent 40 NFB sessions based on the very slow cortical potential range. Inhibitory deficits were specific…

Trait-aggressiveness and impulsivity: role of psychological resilience and childhood trauma in a sample of male prisoners.

BACKGROUND: One of the major challenges for research in the field of human aggression is the need to define the role of personality and trait-like dimensions, such as impulsivity and aggressiveness, in predisposing to violent behavior. AIMS: 1) To determine whether trait- aggressiveness and impulsivity may be associated with socio-demographic, clinical and crime history variables in a sample of male prisoners; 2) to detect any association of those traits with measures of early traumatic experiences and current resilience traits. METHODS: A sample of male prisoners (n = 1356) underwent the Br

Reduced left precentral regional responses in patients with major depressive disorder and history of suicide attempts.

Previous neuroimaging studies have revealed frontal and temporal functional abnormalities in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and a history of suicidal behavior. However, it is unknown whether multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) signal changes among individuals with MDD are associated with a history of suicide attempts and a diathesis for suicidal behavior (impulsivity, hopelessness, and aggression). Therefore, we aimed to explore frontotemporal hemodynamic responses in depressed patients with a history of suicide attempts using 52-channel NIRS. We recruited 30 patient

Emptiness and negative affect changes related to binge eating and borderline personality traits.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by unstable self-image, conflictual interpersonal relationships, emotional dysregulation, and marked impulsivity. One form of impulsivity commonly seen in BPD is binge eating; however, little is known about this maladaptive behavior in the context of BPD. In the eating disorder (ED) literature, multiple theories suggest binge eating occurs as a result of heightened levels of negative affect. Given that BPD and EDs share emotional dysregulation and impulsivity as maintaining mechanisms of each respective disorder, these theories of binge ea

Interference inhibition in offending and non-offending pedophiles: A preliminary event-related fMRI study.

The ability to inhibit behavior is thought to be an import skill for avoiding criminal conduct, especially when combined with personal predispositions or criminogenic needs such as a pedophilic preference disorder. While previous research emphasized the relationship between impulsivity and child sexual offending, not pedophilia per se, studies on the underlying neurobiological mechanisms in subdomains of impulsivity remained scarce. Here, we focused on interference inhibition and examined event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data of three groups of men performing a color-

Preference for immediate over delayed rewards is associated with magnitude of ventral striatal activity.

Discounting future outcomes as a function of their deferred availability underlies much of human decision making. Discounting, or preference for immediate over delayed rewards of larger value, is often associated with impulsivity and is a risk factor for addictive disorders such as pathological gambling, cigarette smoking, and drug and alcohol abuse. The ventral striatum (VS) is involved in mediating behavioral responses and physiological states associated with reward, and dysregulation of the VS contributes to addiction, perhaps by affecting impulsive decision-making. Behavioral tests of dela

Single units in the pigeon brain integrate reward amount and time-to-reward in an impulsive choice task.

BACKGROUND: Animals prefer small over large rewards when the delays preceding large rewards exceed an individual tolerance limit. Such impulsive choice behavior occurs even in situations in which alternative strategies would yield more optimal outcomes. Behavioral research has shown that an animal's choice is guided by the alternative rewards' subjective values, which are a function of reward amount and time-to-reward. Despite increasing knowledge about the pharmacology and anatomy underlying impulsivity, it is still unknown how the brain combines reward amount and time-to-reward information t

Evidence for the Trait-Impulsivity Etiological Model in a Clinical Sample: Bifactor Structure and Its Relation to Impairment and Environmental Risk.

The trait-impulsivity etiological model assumes that a general factor (trait-impulsivity) underlies attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and other externalizing disorders. We investigated the plausibility of this assumption by testing the factor structure of ADHD and ODD in a bifactor framework for a clinical sample of 1420 children between 6 and 18 years of age (M = 9.99, SD = 3.34; 85% male). Further, the trait-impulsivity etiological model assumes that ODD emerges only if environmental risk factors are present. Our results support the validit

Instantaneous and cumulative influences of competition on impulsive choices in domestic chicks.

This study examined instantaneous and cumulative effects of competitive interactions on impulsiveness in the inter-temporal choices in domestic chicks. Chicks were trained to peck colored beads to gain delayed food rewards (1 or 6 grains of millet delivered after a delay ranging between 0 and 4.5 s), and were tested in binary choices between a small-short delay option (SS) and a large-long delay alternative (LL). To examine whether competitive foraging instantaneously changes impulsiveness, we intraindividually compared choices between two consecutive tests in different contexts, one with comp

The Relationship Between Alexithymia, Impulsivity, and Aggression in Mixed Martial Arts Athletes.

This study investigated the relationships among alexithymia, impulsivity, and aggression in mixed martial arts (MMA) athletes. Participants (N = 60, 51 men, and 9 women) were recruited from MMA clubs and training centers in Lebanon. They completed self-report measures including the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20) to assess alexithymia, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) to measure impulsivity, and the Buss-Perry Aggression Scale short form (BPAS-SF) to evaluate aggression tendencies. Results indicated that alexithymia was positively correlated with impulsivity (attentional, r = 0.4

Latent traits of impulsivity and compulsivity: toward dimensional psychiatry.

BACKGROUND: The concepts of impulsivity and compulsivity are commonly used in psychiatry. Little is known about whether different manifest measures of impulsivity and compulsivity (behavior, personality, and cognition) map onto underlying latent traits; and if so, their inter-relationship. METHODS: A total of 576 adults were recruited using media advertisements. Psychopathological, personality, and cognitive measures of impulsivity and compulsivity were completed. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to identify the optimal model. RESULTS: The data were best explained by a two-factor model,

Aggressive behavioral outbursts as an atypical presentation of giant pediatric trigeminal schwannoma: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal schwannomas are rare intracranial tumors that predominantly occur in adults and only exceptionally present in the pediatric population. Behavioral disturbances, particularly pathological laughter and impulsive dysregulation, are uncommon neurological manifestations and typically indicate disruption of supranuclear or brainstem networks by an underlying structural lesion. Their association with trigeminal schwannoma remains exceedingly rare and poorly characterized. OBSERVATIONS: A 13-year-old boy presented with progressive behavioral disturbances, including pathological
