BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies are a leading cause of infant deaths, accounting for almost a fifth of all infant deaths. Few studies have researched the survival experience of infants born with congenital anomalies past the infant stage.
METHODS: Using birth and death files routinely linked to the Michigan Birth Defects Registry, we identified all singleton infants during calendar years 1992 through 1998 with reportable congenital anomalies for our study. A comparative file of children born without congenital anomalies during the same time period was developed using linked birth and death f

OBJECTIVES: To examine the associations among mass incarceration, maternal vulnerability, and disparities in birth outcomes across U.S. counties, utilizing an ecological model and reproductive justice perspective was used. This study tests whether mass incarceration is associated with infant mortality and low birthweight across U.S. counties, and whether maternal vulnerability explains the relationship between mass incarceration and birth disparities.
METHODS: Data were derived from a variety of public sources and were merged using federal FIPS codes. Outcomes from the CDC Vitality Statistics…

Background: Nearly half of congenital heart defects (CHDs) related to mortality occur during infancy although advancements in treatments have increased the survival rates. This study comprehensively examined overall and surgical mortality in CHD infants with the highest mortality rates in an effort to improve our understanding of CHD epidemiology. Methods: Participants were drawn from a dataset of 1,964,691 infants born between 2014 and 2018 in Korea. Crucial CHDs are defined here as including diverse categorical defects and classical critical CHDs but excluding simple shunt defects. Overall m

Cesarean section rates have risen dramatically in the U.S. over the past 20 years. Although infant mortality has declined during the same period, there is little evidence that more frequent cesarean surgery is the cause. Cesareans save lives or benefit health in certain circumstances, but the incidence of those indications has not increased. Cesarean section also has risks, the most significant for the infant being iatrogenic prematurity or respiratory disease. Maternal mortality is 2-4 times higher and morbidity is 5-10 times higher after a cesarean compared to vaginal birth. The four indicat…

Birth and first-48-hr death records were analyzed for 10,024 liveborn infants in Mexico City and 12,786 liveborn infants in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. The objective of the analysis was to characterize the early postnatal mortality rates for different types of fetal growth retardation and prematurity. Infants who were delivered prior to 37 weeks of gestation had 23-100 times the mortality risk of infants born at full term and normal weight. Light-for-gestational-age infants (birth weight less than 2,900 g) were further divided into proportionately growth-retarded with normal Rohrer's index (weight/he

OBJECTIVE: Higher mortality among full-term infants (term infant deaths) contributes to disparities in infant mortality between the United States and other developed countries. We examined differences in the causes of term infant deaths across county poverty levels and urban-rural classification to understand underlying mechanisms through which these factors may act.
METHODS: We linked period birth/infant death files for 2012-2015 with US Census poverty estimates and county urban-rural classifications. We grouped the causes of term infant deaths as sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI), c…

BACKGROUND: Neonatal mortality remains a key indicator of maternal and infant health and continues to show substantial variation across demographic and clinical groups in the United States. A clearer understanding of nonlinear associations and effect modification may help characterize epidemiologic patterns of neonatal mortality and inform perinatal prevention efforts.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study using the U.S. Linked Birth-Infant Death Database from 2015 to 2020. Neonatal mortality was defined as death occurring from day 0 through day 27 after live bir

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the trend of infant mortality from preventable causes in children under one year of age in Rondônia from 2008 to 2018.
METHOD: Epidemiological study of time series with data from the Mortality and Live Birth Information Systems, driven by STATA® version 11.0, trend measured by Prais-Winsten linear regression and autocorrelation with Durbin and Watson test.
RESULTS: The infant mortality rate was 14.57 deaths / 1,000 live births, 9.14 / 1,000 due to preventable causes. Deaths decreased by 2.88% annually (95% CI: - 4.67; -1.06). However, causes that can be reduced by r…

Sleep-related infant death is a major cause of infant mortality in the United States. In the District of Columbia, infant mortality varies widely among regions (2 to 14 per 1000 live births). The study objectives were to analyze the patient characteristics and related variables to sudden unexpected infant deaths at 2 pediatric emergency department (ED) sites and the geographic patterns of infant deaths and their relationship to social vulnerability. This retrospective cohort study examined infants under 1 year of age presenting with cardiac arrest at 2 ED sites from 2010 to 2020. Analysis show…

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a leading cause of infant mortality. Its treatment involves a complex "continuum of care" over time and distance, the equitable delivery of which is particularly challenging in low- and middle-income countries that lack infrastructure, a specialized workforce, or a coordinated patient throughput system. We report an update on the impact of a population-based program, Hridyam (established 2017), to address gaps and inequity in CHD care in Kerala, India.
METHODS: Hridyam is a real-time, open-entry virtual registration and care coordination system th…

Medical Officer of Health reports for London boroughs, 1900-19, are analysed to determine the incidence of neonatal breast-feeding, duration of lactation, reasons for early supplementation and premature weaning, and their relationship with infant mortality. In a sample of 222,989 infants, breast-feeding rates were very high. Over 90% were breast-fed in the first month, almost 80% at 3 months, and over 70% at 6 months. The poorest boroughs had the highest rates of neonatal breast-feeding, but also a higher incidence of early supplementation and premature weaning. There was a significant positiv…

BACKGROUND: Infants with truncus arteriosus typically undergo repair by repurposing the truncal valve as the neo-aortic valve and using a valved conduit homograft for the neo-pulmonary valve. In cases where the native truncal valve is too insufficient for repair, it is replaced, but this is a rare occurrence with a paucity of data, especially in the infant population. Here, we conduct a meta-analysis to better understand the outcomes of infant truncal valve replacement during the primary repair of truncus arteriosus.
METHODS: We systematically reviewed PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL for all studi

AIM: The aim of the study was to investigate the most frequent causes of perinatal mortality in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
METHODS: We analyzed in a retrospective study over a one year period (1999) the following cantons: Sarajevo, Mostar, Tuzla, Bihać, Gorazde, Travnik, Zenica, which represent about one half of the population of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
RESULTS: Perinatal mortality in the analyzed regions within Bosnia and Herzegovina was 19.55@1000, which is unacceptable in comparison with developed countries. Early neonatal mortality (9@1000) was lower than late fetal mortality 10.55@1000. Th

BACKGROUND: Venezuela present a complex political and humanitarian context as the country is suffering from internal conflict and socio-political crisis which led to the deterioration of the health services, hyperinflation, and migration crisis, and this presents a unique case to explore the impact of conflict intensity on health outcomes. This study investigates potential relationships between conflict intensity and key health indicators in Venezuela from 2001 to 2016, focusing on malaria, heart disease mortality, and infant mortality rates.

Accidents are a major cause of death among children. Using computerized linked birth and death record information, this study examined the relationship of selected parental factors to the risk of infant accidental death. The analyses suggest that maternal age and education are inversely related to infant accident mortality while mother's parity is directly related. Accident mortality rate differentials by educational level were more evident for certain categories of accidents.
