In the second segment of this three-part review of parasitic infections of the central nervous system in children, we consider parasitic infections which typically involve various tissues and organs in addition to the brain and spinal cord. Parasites capable of dissemination in immunocompetent hosts are discussed first, and, as in Part I, organisms are grouped according to their predominant geographic location. This is followed by a discussion of the unique aspects of toxoplasmosis, strongyloidiasis and infection with microsporidia in immunocompromised patients, with an emphasis on the central…

SUMMARYUrinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common infections in otherwise healthy individuals. UTI is also common in healthcare settings where patients often require urinary catheters to alleviate urinary retention. The placement of a urinary catheter often leads to catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) caused by a broad range of opportunistic pathogens, commonly referred to as ESKAPE (Enterococcus, Staphylococcus, Klebsiella, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, and Enterobacter) pathogens. Our understanding of CAUTI is complicated by the differences in pathogens, in initial…

Imaging evaluation for lower extremity infections can be complicated, especially in the setting of underlying conditions and with atypical infections. Predisposing conditions are discussed, including diabetes mellitus, peripheral arterial disease, neuropathic arthropathy, and intravenous drug abuse, as well as differentiating features of infectious versus non-infectious disease. Atypical infections such as viral, mycobacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections and their imaging features are also reviewed. Potential mimics of lower extremity infection including chronic nonbacterial osteomyeliti…

OBJECTIVE: Group A Streptococcus (GAS) are Gram-positive cocci that colonize the nasopharynx and/or skin and in rare cases may cause severe invasive infections. Although these infections decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, some countries have observed an increased number of invasive GAS (iGAS) diseases in recent years. The objective of this study was to describe a series of iGAS diseases in a referral hospital for the treatment of pediatric infectious disease in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, between September 2022 and August 2023. The data were obtained from medical records, and GAS was isol…

BACKGROUD: Daptomycin has been used in bone and joint infections (BJI) and prosthesis joint infections (PJI) considering spectrum of activity and biofilm penetration. However, the current experience is based on case reports, case series, cohorts, and international surveys. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate studies about daptomycin treatment efficacy in BJI/PJI compared to other antibiotic regimens.
METHODS: PubMed, LILACS, Scielo and Web of Science databases were searched for articles about daptomycin and treatment of BJI and PJI from inception to March 2018. Inclusion criteri…

Daily practice suggests that respiratory signs may be observed in bacteraemic urinary infections (BUI). Our objective was to search for an association between the presence of respiratory symptoms and the bacteraemic nature of urinary tract infections (UTI). A nested case-control study was carried out based on our computerised dashboard from January 2011 to June 2015. Cases were defined as patients with a BUI due to Enterobacteriaceae species, identified in blood and urine cultures. Controls had fever and a positive urinary sample but sterile blood cultures (NBUI) and a final diagnosis of urina…

The progression of odontogenic infections to necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) is unknown. The Laboratory Risk Indicator for Necrotizing Fasciitis (LRINEC) score is used to predict risk of NSTI. This study aimed to (1) estimate the frequency at which odontogenic infections progress to NSTIs, (2) measure the value of LRINEC in predicting progression to NSTI, and (3) estimate the charges associated with managing NSTIs. This retrospective cohort study enrolled all subjects admitted for the management of odontogenic infections from 2001 to 2013. The primary predictor was the LRINEC score.…

Members of the order Chlamydiales are biphasic intracellular pathogens known to cause disease in both humans and animals. As we learn more about the genetic diversity of this group of pathogens, evidence is growing that these bacteria infect a broader range of animal hosts than previously thought. Over 400 host species are now documented globally with the majority of these being wild animals. Given the impact of chlamydial infections on humans and domesticated animals, the identification of members of the order Chlamydiales in wildlife raises significant questions over a) their impact on anima…

BACKGROUND: Postoperative infection after posterior spondylodesis of thoracic and lumbal spine is the most common complication, and a reason for revision surgery. Aim of this work is to analyze rate of postoperative spine infections at our institution, and to determine eventual risk factors.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In our paper we analyze incidence of deep surgical infections after posterior spondylodesis, performed on our Spine department during last 5 years (September 1, 2008 - September 1, 2013). Including criteria were: posterior spondylodesis with transpedicular screws from Th1 to S2 due t…

BACKGROUND: The clinical significance of the presence of more than one type of virus in the respiratory specimens of children with respiratory infections is not clear.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical characteristics of multiple viral infections versus single infection by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in hospitalized infants.
STUDY DESIGN: This is a prospective study conducted in all infants under 2 years of age admitted for acute respiratory infection (September 2000-June 2003) in a secondary teaching hospital. Virological diagnosis was made by two different multiplex reverse transc…

Military personnel are frequently deployed to distant locations around the world under conditions of great stress, which involve potential exposure to hazardous viruses that are not commonly seen in the developed world. This article will provide an overview of two clinical presentations of viral infections of potential military significance: hemorrhagic fever and poxvirus infections. The three viral hemorrhagic fever viruses described--dengue, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, and Congo-Crimean hemorrhagic fever--represent the diversity of potential hemorrhagic fever viruses that military…

Staphylococcus aureus is the causative organism for many skin and soft tissue (SST) infections. Some SST infections have severe systemic complications, such as bacteraemia and sepsis. S. aureus is the cause of 75% of primary pyodermas. Pre-existing conditions, like tissue injury (ulcers, wounds) or tissue inflammation (exudative dermatitis), and also underlying disorders (such as poorly controlled insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus or cancer) are some of the risk factors for secondary infection with S. aureus. In S. aureus-infected primary skin disorders (impetigo, recurrent eczema), 2% mupir…
