Evaluation of fixed sample-size plans for Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) on broccoli crops in Australia.

Fixed sample-size plans for monitoring Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) on broccoli and other Brassica vegetable crops are popular in Australia for their simplicity and ease of application. But the sample sizes used are often small, approximately 10-25 plants per crop, and it may be that they fail to provide sufficient information upon which to base pest control decisions. We tested the performance of seven fixed sample-size plans (10, 15, 20, 30, 35, 40, and 45 plants) by resampling a large data set on P. xylostella in commercial broccoli crops. For each sample size, enumer

Analysis of Bacillus sphaericus in controlling mosquito populations in urban catch basins.

The West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne infection that can be fatal to humans, equines, and avians, among others. WNV was first introduced to the United States in 1999 and is rapidly spreading across the country. Urban catch basins are thought to be prime breeding sites for mosquitoes, especially those identified as WNV carriers. The pilot study reported here was conducted in a city in southeastern Pennsylvania where there are 70,000 catch basins. The purpose of the study was 1) to determine whether catch basins are breeding sites for mosquitoes and 2) to test the effectiveness of a larv

Role of wastewater irrigation in mosquito breeding in south Punjab, Pakistan.

Mosquito breeding within the wastewater irrigation system around the town of Haroonabad in the southern Punjab, Pakistan, was studied from July to September 2000 as part of a wider study of the costs and benefits of wastewater use in agriculture. The objective of this study was to assess the vector-borne human disease risks associated with mosquito species utilizing wastewater for breeding. Mosquito larvae were collected on a fortnightly basis from components of the wastewater disposal system and irrigated sites. In total, 133 samples were collected, about equally divided between agricultural

Effect of high-carbon dioxide atmospheres on infestations of apple maggot (Diptera: Tephritidae) in apples.

Short-term storage regimens containing elevated atmospheres of carbon dioxide (CO2) were evaluated for their ability to disinfest newly harvested 'McIntosh' apples of apple maggot, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh). Infested fruits containing newly laid eggs were either placed directly into the high-CO2 atmosphere at 10 degrees C to expose this life stage, or else held first for 7 d at room temperature, to allow development to the neonate larval stage. Treatment combinations consisted of three different CO2 levels (10.6, 14.9, and 19.0% CO2) and two periods of exposure (7 and 14 d). Apple maggot eg

Behavioral responses and mortality in German cockroaches (Blattodea: Blattellidae) after exposure to dishwashing liquid.

Behavioral responses and mortality of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), after exposure to solutions of common household dishwashing liquid diluted in tap water without other known insecticidal active ingredients are described. Soap solutions of 0.05, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0% were tested on first and second instars, fifth and sixth instars, and adults. Cockroaches were treated individually or in groups. Behavioral observations after treatment included an immediate knockdown period, an awakening and a struggle period, an unresponsive period, and either death or

Biological control of malaria vectors.

A comprehensive review is presented of the potentiality of biocontrol agents viz. entomophagus bacteria (Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis and Bacillus sphaericus), fungi, microsporidians, predators and parasites against malaria vectors in the field condition. Unlike insecticides, these control agents are host specific and safer to the environment. However, barring fishes which are being used in certain situations, other biocontrol agents have not yet reached the operational stage. Two spore forming bacteria B. thuringiensis var. israelensis and B. sphaericus have been extensively tested

[Current possibilities in the control of Loa Loa filariasis].

Loa loa is currently considered as a major pathogen in man. The clinical repercussions of this filariasis have been clearly established and treatment is considered essential. Ivermectin, administered alone or with diethylcarbamazine presents interesting therapeutic possibilities. The review of vector control methods show that trapping is the only effective measure of protection. In order to reduce the endemicity of loaiasis, mass treatment with ivermectin could be envisaged immediately. However, the development of this filariasis is directly related to the development of the Central African fo

Aedes albopictus in the United States: rapid spread of a potential disease vector.

Aedes albopictus, the Asian "tiger mosquito," was found in Houston, Texas, in 1985. Aedes albopictus is primarily a forest edge inhabiting species that has readily adapted to the container habitats produced by humans. Although not yet incriminated in the spread of any disease in the Americas, it has been repeatedly implicated in epidemic dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever transmission in Asia. It is a competent laboratory vector of La Crosse, yellow fever and other viruses, and can transovarially transmit at least 15 viruses. In 1986, Ae. albopictus was found in many other Texas counties, and

A reassessment of the expected development consequences of tsetse control efforts in Africa.

Since the World Food Conference (1974) recommended a long term program of tsetse control, increasing attention of governments and international agencies has focused on the problem. This paper briefly outlines the strategies potentially available for tsetse control operations before assessing the likely consequences of any large scale tsetse control endeavor. The implications for both natural and human systems are shown to be profound and, in many cases, counter-productive to development goals. Suggestions for more appropriate strategies of addressing the tsetse issue are included. The major co

Large river treatment with Bacillus thuringiensis (H-14) for the control of Simulium damnosum s.l. in the Onchocerciasis Control Programme.

Complete mortality of Simulium damnosum Theobald s.l. larvae was obtained along a 19 km stretch of the Marahoué River including and downstream of the Danangoro rapids complex in the Bandama Basin of Ivory Coast after treatment with 1.5 ppm/10 min of the Sandoz 402-1-WDC formulation of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner serotype H-14. Partial control was observed for an additional 15 km. The level of control was especially encouraging considering the low concentration (.8%) of active ingredient in the Sandoz formulation. Additionally, the treated population has demonstrated resistance to temephos

Evaluation of gossyplure, compared with hexalure, for monitoring pink bollworm infestations in cotton fields of Israel.

Gossyplure used to bait field traps at a dose of 50 micrograms admixed with 4-16 milligrams of an antioxidant attracted and captured male pink bollworm moths early in the cotton-growing season (early May) in Israel, whereas 20 milligrams of hexalure plus antioxidant was completely inactive under identical conditions. Although gossyplure without antioxidant was inactivated through decomposition within ten days, the mixtures remained attractive for at least two months; the antioxidant also increased moth catches 2.5 fold. Monitoring data obtained with 3000 gossyplure-baited traps, at one trap pe
