Are ICAM, VCAM and E-selectin levels different in first manic episode and subsequent remission?

OBJECTIVE: In bipolar patients, the rate of mortality from cardiovascular diseases is two-fold higher than that in other psychiatric disorders. The risk of cardiovascular diseases was found to be associated with some cellular adhesion molecules: Intracellular adhesion molecule (ICAM), vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM) and E-selectin. The aim of this study was to compare ICAM, VCAM and E-selectin levels at first manic episode and subsequent remission period, and to investigate the presence of a relationship between adhesion molecules levels and clinical and metabolic variables. METHODS: I

Low triiodothyronine: a new facet of inflammation in end-stage renal disease.

Because inflammation influences thyroid function, it was hypothesized that low plasma free triiodothyronine (fT3) in ESRD may be an unsuspected expression of the inflammatory state of these patients. This study investigated (1) the steady-state relationship between fT3 and inflammation markers (IL-6 and C-reactive protein) and markers of endothelial activation (intercellular adhesion molecule-1 [ICAM-1] and vascular cellular adhesion molecule-1 [VCAM-1]) in 200 hemodialysis (HD) patients and (2) the effect of intercurrent acute inflammatory/infectious processes on plasma fT3 in a group of 17 p…

Markers for endothelial activation during open heart surgery.

BACKGROUND: Reliable markers for endothelial activation are needed when studying biocompatibility of cardiopulmonary bypass. METHODS: Blood samples from 21 patients undergoing combined valve and coronary artery bypass surgery were collected before anesthesia (T1), after re-transfusion of blood from the heart-lung machine (T2), and on the first postoperative morning (T3). Concentrations of soluble markers were determined using sandwich enzyme-linked immunoadsorbent assay for sICAM-1, sVCAM-1, and sE-selectin. The sera were also used to stimulate human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) i

Immunophenotypic analysis suggests that granuloma faciale is a gamma-interferon-mediated process.

Granuloma faciale (GF) is an uncommon inflammatory dermatosis with characteristic clinical and histologic features. Very little is known about its pathogenesis. We used a battery of immunoperoxidase lymphocyte markers to study the population of hematopoietic cells present in a case of GF. The majority of non-myelocytic hematopoietic cells present were T-helper lymphocytes. The cells stained strongly with antibodies against the interleukin-2 receptor and with anti-lymphocyte functional antigen (LFA 1 alpha) antibodies. Overlying keratinocytes did not stain with ICAM-1 or HLA-DR, which may accou

Hypertonic saline solution reduces mesenteric microcirculatory dysfunctions and bacterial translocation in a rat model of strangulated small bowel obstruction.

We examined the effects of hypertonic saline (HS) on inflammatory, metabolic variables, and bacterial translocation (BT) in rats submitted to intestinal obstruction and ischemia (IO). Male Wistar rats were submitted to IO and treated, 2 h thereafter, with lactated Ringer's (LR) (4 mL/kg per 5 min, i.v.) or HS (7.5% NaCl, 4 mL/kg per 5 min, i.v.). Twenty-four hours after IO, rats were also submitted to enterectomy/enteroanastomosis to resection of necrotized small bowel. Leukocyte-endothelial interactions were investigated by intravital microscopy and the expression of P-selectin and intercellu

Effect of ultraviolet light on the expression of adhesion molecules and T lymphocyte adhesion to human dermal microvascular endothelial cells.

In order to determine the effect of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on the cell adhesion molecules expressed in human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HDMEC), the cells were exposed to varying UVR doses and the cell surface was examined for expression of intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM- 1), and E-selectin. The effect of UVB irradiation on the binding of T lymphocytes to HDMEC was also examined. UVA irradiation did not affect the surface expression of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, or E-selectin on the HDMEC. However, following UVB exposure, ELISA de

Cellular and molecular parameters in human renal allograft rejection.

Acute rejection of human renal allografts is frequent postransplantation complication. In addition, it is a risk factor for chronic rejection, the most common cause of failure of long-term allografts. Renal allografts are rejected as a result of an immune response directed against alloantigens on the graft that are absent from the host, and the most important of these are the HLA antigens. The application of molecular diagnostic methods has revealed a differential intra-renal gene expression of cytokines, chemokines and their receptors, and cytotoxic attack molecules in acute and chronic rejec

Vascular adhesion molecules in oral lichen planus.

OBJECTIVE: Because recruitment and retention of lymphoid cells appear to be critical components of the pathogenesis of lichen planus, we have compared the expression and distribution of a panel of vascular adhesion molecules (ELAM-1, P-selectin, ICAM-1, VCAM-1, PECAM-1, CD34) and leukocyte adhesion molecule ligands (LFA-1, Mac-1, VLA4, L-selectin) in biopsies of this disease. STUDY-DESIGN: Frozen sections of 12 clinically and histologically confirmed cases of lichen planus and 9 normal control tissues were evaluated immunohistochemically with a standard 1-day avidin-biotin peroxidase techniqu

Single Cell Proteomics Reveals Novel Cell Phenotypes in Marfan Mouse Aneurysm.

BACKGROUND: Single-cell omics technology is a powerful tool in biomedical research. However, single cell proteomics has lagged due to an inability to amplify peptides in a similar fashion to nucleotide strings. Single cell proteomics is important because proteins are the main functional unit in cells, and they often poorly correlate with mRNA quantities. In this paper we describe the first single cell proteomic analysis of complex tissue, comparing aneurysmal and normal mouse aorta from males and females. We also compare and integrate our single cell proteomic profiles with a matching single c

Simple advice on lifestyle habits and long-term changes in biomarkers of inflammation and vascular adhesion in healthy middle-aged men.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Lifestyle habits, vascular function and inflammation are components in the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). We investigated whether simple advice on dietary and exercise habits given (at a single time point) to hypercholesterolemic men affects circulating biomarkers of inflammation and vascular adhesion. SUBJECTS/METHODS: In total, 157 men (age 46±5 years) with mild hypercholesterolemia were randomized to four intervention groups, diet (D, n=40), exercise (E, n=39), diet and exercise (DE, n=39) or controls (C, n=39) and serum concentrations of C-reactive pro

Increased levels of VCAM-1 is associated with higher occurrence of coronary artery disease in adults with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) leads to important vascular abnormalities, including the endothelial dysfunction and the production of endothelial cell adhesion molecules. The adhesion molecules play an important role in the process of endothelial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. We assess the relationship between the levels of adhesion molecules and the presence of coronary artery disease (CAD) in Chinese adults with moderate to severe OSA. METHODS: The cross-sectional study included a total of 189 Chinese adults: 90 patients with moderate to severe OSA (apnea-hy

Circulating cell adhesion molecules as biomarkers in inflammatory bowel disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Endothelial dysfunction is a recognized component of the pathogenesis and clinical course of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Measurement of soluble forms of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) may reflect the extent of endothelial injury and serve as potential biomarkers of disease activity. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies reporting soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1), mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule-1 (sMAdCAM-1), and selectins (sE-selectin, sP-selectin, and sL-selectin) in patients …

Activation of macrophages and expansion of specific T lymphocytes in the lungs of mice intratracheally inoculated with Cryptococcus neoformans.

A quantitative and qualitative change in inflammatory cells in the lungs of mice after intratracheal inoculation of heat-killed Cryptococcus neoformans was examined by direct analysis of the pulmonary intraparenchymal leucocytes. Macrophages and T and B lymphocytes increased, peaked at day 7, and then gradually decreased to the basal level. Macrophages were activated 7 days after the inoculation, as indicated by the enhanced expression of MHC class II, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and Fc receptor (FcR), which have been known as their activation markers. T cells were also activate…
