Ethical and legal considerations in non interventional health clinical trials in the French context.

While the development of regulations in the conduct of research in humans, has better allowed risks and associated contraints to be framed, it has also raised further questions. French regulations currently consider that research based on questionnaires or interviews has no impact on the care of patients or on the individual, a view that is too limited and is not shared by the ethics committees charged with the protection of those involved in studies. Any research relating to a person requires his or her active involvement. The intention of the researcher can be perceived by the participant an

Impact of and Coping with Post-Traumatic Symptoms of Refugees in Temporary Accommodations in Germany: A Qualitative Analysis.

Due to pre-, peri- and post-migratory stress factors, refugees often experience higher levels of psychological stress than the general population. Post-traumatic stress disorder, in particular, has an increased prevalence in the refugee population. However, living conditions in the early post-migratory phase are characterized by many challenges. In the present qualitative study, 14 refugees with symptoms of PTSD from temporary accommodations in Germany were interviewed in semi-structured interviews about their individual experiences of the impact of their trauma sequelae symptoms on their curr

Patients' Lived Experience in a Multicomponent Intervention for Fibromyalgia Syndrome in Primary Care: A Qualitative Interview Study.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) disrupts patients' biopsychosocial spheres. A multicomponent intervention (MCI) program, which combined health education, cognitive behavioral therapy, and physical activity, was conducted in South Catalonia's primary care centers with the aim of improving symptom self-management and quality of life. A qualitative interview study was carried out to understand patients' lived experiences during the intervention program. Sampled purposively, 10 patients were interviewed via phone calls and face-to-face. The encounters were audio-recorded, verbatim transcribed, and ana

Emotion-relevant impulsivity predicts sustained anger and aggression after remission in bipolar I disorder.

Recent evidence suggests that anger and aggression are of concern even during remission for persons with bipolar I disorder, although there is substantial variability in the degree of anger and aggression across individuals. Little research is available to examine psychological models of anger and aggression for those with remitted bipolar disorder, and that was the goal of this study. Participants were 58 persons diagnosed with bipolar I disorder using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, who were followed with monthly symptom severity interviews until they achieved remission, and th

"I Was Expecting the Worst": Exploring Barriers and Facilitators to Lung Cancer Screening in Black and Hispanic Communities.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer screening (LCS) with low-dose computed tomography reduces lung cancer mortality but remains underutilized, particularly among Black and Hispanic populations. We explored barriers and facilitators to LCS from the perspectives of screening-eligible patients and clinicians. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews in English or Spanish (per participant preference) with 22 Black or Hispanic patients who had completed at least one LCS exam and 22 clinicians (20 primary care, two pulmonologists) from two safety-net hospitals in Massachusetts. Interview guides were in

Examining the acceptability and feasibility of the Compassionate Mindful Resilience (CMR) programme in adults living with chronic kidney disease: the COSMIC study findings.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with chronic kidney disease experience difficult physical and psychological symptoms, that impact quality of life, and are at increased risk of anxiety and depression. Access to specialist psychological support is limited. This study aimed to support a new service development project, in collaboration with Kidney Care UK, to implement the Compassionate Mindful Resilience (CMR) programme, developed by MindfulnessUK, which provides accessible mindfulness techniques and practices to enhance compassion and resilience, and explore its feasibility for people living with stage

Organizing Psycho-Oncological Care for Cancer Patients: The Patient's Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Cancer patients often suffer from psychological distress during or after cancer treatment, but the use of psycho-oncological care among cancer patients is limited. One of the reasons might be that the way psycho-oncological care is organized, does not fit patients' preferences. This study aimed to obtain detailed insight into cancer patients' preferences regarding the organization of psycho-oncological care. METHODS: 18 semi-structured interviews were conducted among cancer patients. Patients completed psycho-oncological treatment between 2015 and 2020 at the psychology department

Effectiveness of a WHO self-help psychological intervention for preventing mental disorders among Syrian refugees in Turkey: a randomized controlled trial.

Refugees are at high risk of developing mental disorders. There is no evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that psychological interventions can prevent the onset of mental disorders in this group. We assessed the effectiveness of a self-help psychological intervention developed by the World Health Organization, called Self-Help Plus, in preventing the development of mental disorders among Syrian refugees experiencing psychological distress in Turkey. A two-arm, assessor-masked RCT was conducted in two Turkish areas. Eligible participants were adult Syrian refugees experiencing psy

Behaviour change, the itchy spot of healthcare quality improvement: How can psychology theory and skills help to scratch the itch?

Despite the clear utility and transferability, National Health Service (NHS) quality improvement initiatives have yet to benefit fully from what is already known within health psychology. Thus far, evidence from established, seminal behaviour change theory and practice have been ignored in favour of newly developed models and frameworks. Further, whilst there is a growing interest in what is commonly referred to as 'human factors' of change and improvement, there is scant transferability of known psychologically informed implementation skills into routine NHS Improvement practice. The science

Integrating pain management in clinical practice.

There is much evidence to suggest that psychological and social issues are predictive of pain severity, emotional distress, work disability, and response to medical treatments among persons with chronic pain. Psychologists can play an important role in the identification of psychological and social dysfunction and in matching personal characteristics to effective interventions as part of a multidisciplinary approach to pain management, leading to a greater likelihood of treatment success. The assessment of different domains using semi-structured clinical interviews and standardized self-report

Why are brain tumours still being missed?

The prediagnosis period of 74 children with primary brain tumours was assessed to examine their presentation and reasons for any delay in diagnosis. Medical case notes were reviewed and parents were interviewed and asked to complete psychological questionnaires. Mean (SD) duration of clinical history was 20.0 (29.1) weeks. Most common symptoms were vomiting (65%) and headache (64%). Only 34% of headaches were always associated with vomiting and only 28% occurred 'early morning'. Changes in the child's personality (47%) were also common. The average number of consultations before diagnosis was
