Network structure of depression and anxiety in Bangladeshi women.

PURPOSE: Depression and anxiety are highly prevalent and frequently co-occurring mental health conditions, yet their symptom-level interrelationships remain poorly understood in low-and middle-income countries. Conceptualizing mental disorders as networks of interacting symptoms, this study aimed to examine the network structure of depression and anxiety symptoms among Bangladeshi women. METHODS: This study used cross-sectional data from the 2022 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey, comprising 19,930 women aged 15–49 years. Sixteen symptoms from the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7)

Network analysis of depressive and anxiety symptoms in schizophrenia: Revealing central symptoms and suicide risk.

BACKGROUND: Depressive and anxiety symptoms are highly prevalent in schizophrenia, substantially contributing to disease burden and suicide risk. However, their complex interrelationships remain poorly understood, limiting the development of targeted interventions. This study was the first to apply network analysis to investigate the network structure of depressive and anxiety symptoms specifically in individuals with schizophrenia, aiming to uncover precise therapeutic targets. METHODS: In a large-scale cross-sectional study of 19,326 individuals with schizophrenia, depressive and anxiety sy

Mechanisms, consequences and role of interventions for sleep deprivation: Focus on mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease in elderly.

Sleep is established as an essential physiological need that impacts physical, emotional, and cognitive functions profoundly. Physiologically, inadequate sleep weakens immune function, heightening susceptibility to infections and chronic illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Hormonal disruptions due to sleep loss further exacerbate metabolic dysregulation, contributing to weight gain and other health complications. Emotionally, sleep deprivation leads to mood disturbances, including increased irritability, heightened stress responses, and a greater likelihood of moo

Editorial: Safer Use of Antipsychotics in Youth (SUAY): Should Treatment Be Guided by Symptoms?

Child and adolescent psychiatrists have company as they wrestle with clinical decision making regarding when it is appropriate to prescribe an antipsychotic. Pediatricians face a similar challenge in trying to determine under what circumstances to prescribe an antibiotic. Both classes of medications are powerful and can be lifesaving, but they are not without the risk of associated adverse events and cumulative exposure. Concerns regarding the widespread use of antipsychotics in children and adolescents have been supported by national trends indicating predominance of prescriptions for conditi

White matter abnormalities in adults with bipolar disorder type-II and unipolar depression.

Discerning distinct neurobiological characteristics of related mood disorders such as bipolar disorder type-II (BD-II) and unipolar depression (UD) is challenging due to overlapping symptoms and patterns of disruption in brain regions. More than 60% of individuals with UD experience subthreshold hypomanic symptoms such as elevated mood, irritability, and increased activity. Previous studies linked bipolar disorder to widespread white matter abnormalities. However, no published work has compared white matter microstructure in individuals with BD-II vs. UD vs. healthy controls (HC), or examined

Second generation antipsychotics (SGAs) for non-psychotic disorders in children and adolescents: a review of the randomized controlled studies.

In children and adolescents the Second Generation Antipsychotics (SGAs) represent the class of psychotropic drugs whose use has grown more significantly in recent years: they are primarily used for treatment of patients with disruptive behavior disorders, mood disorders and pervasive developmental disorders or mental retardation. In order to compare the efficacy and tolerability of antipsychotics against placebo or each other, a systematic Medline/PubMed search for randomized, double blind studies on SGA in patients younger than 18 years of age at enrollment, was conducted. Papers on schizophr

Kratom Dependence and Treatment Options: A Comprehensive Review of the Literature.

Kratom, or Mitragyna speciosa Korth., is a tropical plant prevalent in Southeast Asia, and it is utilized as a traditional remedy for symptomatic relief of various illnesses. It has been labeled as an atypical opioid with significant narcotic-like properties, capable of inducing kratom dependence among those who misuse or abuse it. The prevalence of kratom use has drastically increased worldwide, raising concerns among healthcare providers, particularly regarding the availability of efficacious treatment options for kratom dependence. This manuscript provides a comprehensive narrative review o

Carrying Strength and Silence: A Patient Perspective on Postpartum Mood in Black Motherhood.

I first learned about the baby blues in medical school as a short definition: mood swings, tearfulness, and irritability resolving within two weeks. When I experienced them after giving birth during my second year of training, they felt far more complex than what I had read. I remember lying in the hospital that first night, overcome with tears and questioning if I was already falling short as a mother. Intellectually, I knew shifting hormones were at play, yet the sadness and guilt felt undeniably real. As a Black woman, I also carried the weight of cultural expectations. There is a persisten

Neurophysiological symptoms and aspartame: What is the connection?

Aspartame (α-aspartyl-l-phenylalanine-o-methyl ester), an artificial sweetener, has been linked to behavioral and cognitive problems. Possible neurophysiological symptoms include learning problems, headache, seizure, migraines, irritable moods, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. The consumption of aspartame, unlike dietary protein, can elevate the levels of phenylalanine and aspartic acid in the brain. These compounds can inhibit the synthesis and release of neurotransmitters, dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, which are known regulators of neurophysiological activity. Aspartame acts as …

Effects of pepper grenade explosions on non-combatant bystanders.

Pepper gas is used for riot control in many parts of the world. Yet, its effects on bystanders are largely unreported. We fielded a questionnaire-based survey of 500 bystanders exposed to gas when police used pepper grenades against belligerent 'stone-pelters' in the northern Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir. Of 294 non-combatants who consented to participate in our survey, 97 per cent developed cough and irritation of the throat within few seconds of breathing the pungent smelling gas. They reported respiratory problems, dermatologic symptoms, sleep disturbances, and mood changes with varying
