OBJECTIVE: Preeclampsia is a unique disease of pregnancy. Delivery via caesarean section is the most important way of terminating the pregnancy and treating preeclampsia. Perioperative fluid therapy is performed to maintain the circulatory volume and reduce tissue edema. To determine if single-frequency foot-to-foot bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) can detect acute changes in total body water (TBW) following consumption of isotonic saline. All participants ate a sodium-free meal at 4 h prior to the data collection visit and had euhydration confirmed using urine specific gravity at the beginning of the experimental visit. Subjects drank 466 mL of isotonic saline (Na+ 140 mmol·L-1) following baseline measures. Blood sampling and BIA were performed at baseline and every 30 min for 3 h after saline consumption. Ten healthy participants completed this study.

Amnioinfusion is being used to treat intrapartum problems known to be associated with fetal compromise, including prophylactic treatment of oligohydramnios during labor and after premature rupture of the membranes, treatment of severe variable decelerations during labor and reducing the risk of meconium aspiration during labor in patients with thick meconium fluid. INTRODUCTION: The turnover of Ringer´s solutions is greatly dependent on the physiological situation, such as the presence of dehydration or anaesthesia. The present study evaluates whether the kinetics is affected by previous infusion of colloid fluid.
METHODS: Ten male volunteers with a mean age of 22 years underwent three infusion experiments, on separate days and in random order. The experiments included 10 mL/kg of 6% hydroxyethyl starch 130/0.4 (Voluven™), 20 mL/kg of Ringer's acetate, and a combination of both, where Ringer´s was administered 75 minutes after the starch infusion ended.
