During early lactation, both primiparous (PP) and multiparous (MP) cows are commonly fed diets rich in starch and low in forages to support their high energy requirements. Yet, the PP cows experience this dietary challenge for the first time, which might result in higher odds for them to develop rumen and systemic health disorders. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of decreasing the amount of forages in the diet on chewing and sorting behaviors and rumen and systemic health variables in PP and MP dairy cows. Twenty-four lactating Simmental cows [8 PP, average dry m

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Hypothyroidism may influence lactation physiology, but evidence regarding its association with mature human milk composition remains limited. This cross-sectional study evaluated macronutrient composition and apparent thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration in 24 h composite mature milk samples from women with a documented history/diagnosis of treated or clinically managed hypothyroidism attending lactation counseling and human milk-bank consultation, compared with controls without known thyroid disorders.
METHODS: Sixty-six lactating women attending the Human M

BACKGROUND: Obesity is characterized by excessive fat accumulation, which is related with abnormal pluripotency of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Recently, there is growing evidence that the disorder of maternal vitamin D (VD) intake is a well-known risk factor for long-term adverse health outcomes to their offspring. Otherwise, less is known of its repercussion and underlying mechanisms on the different differentiation potential of MSCs.
METHODS: Four-week-old female C57BL/6J mice were fed with different VD reproductive diets throughout the whole pregnancy and lactation. The characteristics

BACKGROUND AND AIM: It is known that during the early postpartum and lactation periods in dairy cows, metabolic disorders develop, that is, ketosis, which can lead to secondary damage to internal organs. Therefore, it is important to address the issues of changing the lactating cows' clinical, laboratory, and physiological parameters regarding the development of hepatocardial syndrome. This study aimed to provide clinical and diagnostic justification for developing hepatocardial syndrome in highly productive dairy cows.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted on 20 black and white cows

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Although the neurohypophyseal hormones vasopressin (VP) and oxytocin (OT) are mostly known for their role respectively in antidiuresis, and in labour, lactation and maternal behavior, both might exert widespread influences either on emotion and cognition in healthy subjects, showing some gender-related differences. They interact with each other facilitating shifts between positive socially- oriented and defensive states. In fact, VP amplifies the reactivity to stressors showing also beneficial effects on attention, verbal learning as well as memory, whereas OT reduces

Anxiety disorders are extremely common in modern society. The Epidemiologic Catchment Area (ECA) Study reported a 1-month prevalence for anxiety disorders of 7.3%, and a lifetime prevalence of 14.6%. Three anxiety disorders were emphasized: panic disorder with a lifetime prevalence of 1.6%, phobic disorders with a lifetime prevalence of 12.5%, and obsessive compulsive disorder with a lifetime prevalence of 2.5%. Data from the ECA survey indicated that all of these disorders are more common in women than in men. Familial proclivities toward anxiety have been reported. Panic attacks may be easil
