Temperature Effect on Parasitism in Auricularia Larva of the Sea Cucumber Isostichopus fuscus: Implications for Aquaculturing and Management.

A protozoa leads a rapid onset of symptoms, with high mortality rates in the rearing of the planktotrophic larvae of the tropical holothurian Isostichopus fuscus for aquaculture. This study aimed to determine the effect of temperature on the infection parameters and the larvae size with/without parasites in its five development stages: T1-EA (250-300 μm), T2-MA-I (300-600 μm), T3-MA-II (600-900 μm), T4-A (1.1-1.3 mm), and T5-LA (≈500 μm). Eight 500 L conical tanks with filtered and UV-sterilized seawater with 0.2 larvae mL-1 under two temperature treatments (low: 23.0 ± 2.5 °C, high: 27.0 ± 0.…

Effects of wood creosote on anisakiasis: A Japanese traditional medicine as a potential tool against Anisakis larva infection.

Anisakiasis has become more widely known because of the increasing popularity of raw fish consumption worldwide; it is the most common form of food poisoning in Japan. This foodborne disease has no specific treatment. Current treatments involve detecting and removing parasites that penetrate the gastric mucosa using endoscopy in medical settings. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of wood creosote (WC) on anisakid larval movement and viability in vitro and in vivo. Using two WC concentrations, 0.67 and 6.7 mg/mL, we performed in vitro and in vivo experiments to demonstrate the…

Visceral larva migrans syndrome: analysis of serum cytokine levels in children with hepatic lesions confirmed in radiological findings.

Human toxocariasis is a helminth zoonosis resulting from accidental infection of humans by the roundworms Toxocara canis (T. canis) and cati (T. cati). The infection occurs in five forms: systemic (VLM), ocular, neurological, covert and asymptomatic. The aim of this study was to characterize the radiological and immunological findings in hepatic inflammation during the course of systemic infection by Toxocara sp. in children. Fifteen children, 2 to 17 years of age, with serological diagnosis of T. canis infection underwent abdominal ultrasonography and computer tomography (CT). Eosinophil coun

Occupational allergy to aquarium fish food: red midge larva, freshwater shrimp, and earthworm. A clinical and immunological study.

BACKGROUND: Chironomids seem to be the main cause of occupational allergy to aquarium fish food. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the pattern of occupational sensitization to 3 different arthropod species used as components of aquarium fish food. METHODS: The study sample comprised 8 workers from a fish food packing department. The control group comprised 40 atopic patients (20 of whom were allergic to mites). We performed prick tests with extracts of red midge larva (Chironomus thummi), freshwater shrimp (Gammarus species), earthworm (Tubifex species), and other arthropod…

Musca domestica larva lectin induces apoptosis in BEL-7402 cells through a Ca(2+)/JNK-mediated mitochondrial pathway.

Although Musca domestica larvae lectin (MLL) is able to inhibit cancer cell proliferation and to induce cancer cell apoptosis, the molecular mechanism(s) responsible for these processes remain elusive. In the current study, the signaling network underlying the MLL-induced apoptosis of human hepatoma BEL-7402 cell was investigated. Our data found out that MLL causes a sustained increase of the intracellular Ca(2+) and this process was prevented by the intracellular calcium chelator, BAPTA-AM, suggesting the involvement of intracellular Ca(2+) in MLL-induced cell apoptosis. MLL also causes the p…

A case of Ascaris suum visceral larva migrans diagnosed by using A. suum larval excretory-secretory (ES) antigen.

A 42-y-old female presented with common cold-like symptoms. Laboratory data showed mild liver dysfunction together with peripheral blood eosinophilia. She was suspected of having a helminthic infection, however parasite eggs or larvae were not detected by repeated stool examinations. Eventually she transpired to have a high IgG antibody titer against excretory-secretary (ES) antigen of Ascaris suum larvae, but not of Toxocara canis larvae, suggesting that she had been suffering from visceral larva migrans (VLM) caused by A. suum. Her sickness improved without any treatment. Current results cle…

A novel function for the pineal organ in the control of swim depth in the Atlantic halibut larva.

The pineal organ of vertebrates is a photo-sensitive structure that conveys photoperiod information to the brain. This information influences circadian rhythm and related metabolic processes such as thermoregulation, hatching time, body growth, and the timing of reproduction. This study demonstrates extra-ocular light responses that control swim depth in the larva of the Atlantic halibut, Hyppoglosus hyppoglosus. Young larvae without a functional eye (<29 days) swim upwards after an average delay of 5 s following the onset of a downwelling light stimulus, but sink downwards a few seconds later…

[A case of myelitis caused by visceral larva migrans due to Ascaris suum presenting only with Lhermitte's sign].

A 27-year-old woman was admitted because of pain radiating through her back on neck flexion that had begun a month ago. She frequently ate r … RI lesions, and reduced the anti-Ascaris suum antibody titers in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid. Larva migrans of Ascaris suum involving the central nervous system is considered to be extremely rare, but such cases showing mild neurologic impairment without systemic symptoms may have been overlooked.

[The effect of ivermectin on reactivated somatic larva of Ancylostoma caninum Ercolani 1859 (Ancylostomidae) in the pregnant dog].

It was evaluated by means of a controlled test to what extent reactivated larvae of Ancylostoma caninum were influenced by single or double treatment with ivermectin. The investigations were done with a total of ten experimentally infected bitches. The single treatment of dams two to ten days ante partum with 0.5 mg or 1 mg ivermectin per kg bodyweight reduced the wormburden of their puppies on an average by 96.6% and 98.5%, respectively. The double treatment with 0.5 mg/kg bodyweight ante and post partum each with an interval of ten days completely prevented lactogenic infections with Ancylos…

A paper radioimmunosorbent test (PRIST) for the detection of larva-specific antibodies to Toxocara canis in human sera.

A paper radioimmunosorbent test (PRIST) was shown to be sensitive and reproducible when used with excretory/secretory antigen of Toxocara canis second stage larvae. Whatman No. 50 filter paper (5 mm discs) gave the most consistent and clear results with antigen at a concentration of 100 micrograms/ml, and could be stored for up to 3 weeks in vacuo at -70 degrees C. Antigen coated discs were incubated with test sera at 1:10 dilution for 3 h at room temperature (21 degrees C), reacted with [125I]anti-human IgG for 1 h and counts determined in a gamma counter. Sera from patients with fascioliasis…

Antibodies to Toxocara in the sera of visceral larva migrans patients: the significance of raised levels of IgE.

It was possible to detect in the sera of patients, for whom visceral larva migrans had been confirmed histologically, not only antibodies to the excretory–secretory antigens of Toxocara canis by means of fluorescence techniques, but also specific homocytotropic antibody measured by passive cutaneous anaphylactic tests in baboons and monkeys. It was observed that these patients had ten to fifteen times the average normal level of IgE as determined by the radioimmunosorbent test. All cases authenticated histologically gave these results, which suggests that these sort of serological findings can…

Visceral larva migrans--an immunofluorescent examination of rabbit and human sera for antibodies to the ES antigens of the second stage larvae of Toxocara canis, Toxocara cati and Toxascaris leonina (Nematoda).

Precipitates were demonstrated in vitro at the orifices of the second stage larvae of Toxocara canis and T. cati when placed in sera derived from rabbits infected with these nematodes. Cross-reactions occurred between these two species. Furthermore, these precipitates occurring at the oral, excretory pore and the anal orifices of these larvae were shown to be of a specific antibody nature by the use of the direct fluorescent antibody (Coons) staining technique. The second stage larvae of Toxascaris leonina did not react in this way when examined in the above-mentioned experimental system, or i…
