BACKGROUND Spindle cell carcinomas and sarcomas are 2 uncommon primary spindle cell malignant tumors of the breast. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry for cell phenotypic markers can identify the type of tumor. This report is of a 45-year-old woman with a primary leiomyosarcoma of the breast, successfully treated by surgical excision. CASE REPORT A 45-year-old woman presented to our clinic in February 2018 with a 10.5-cm tumor in the right breast with lateral invasion of the pectoralis minor and pectoralis major. When the tumor first appeared in 2016, it was 5 cm in size and was diagnosed…

Leiomyosarcoma of urinary bladder (LMS-UB) is a highly malignant mesenchymal tumor, accounting for less than 0.5% of all bladder malignancies, with a predominant clinical presentation of hematuria. Here we report a case of low-grade LMS-UB. A 44-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital with urodynia for 2 weeks. The patient's pelvis CT showed a mass on the right part of the bladder. For this reason, he was initially diagnosed with bladder cancer. We performed a robot-assisted laparoscopic enucleation of the bladder tumor and low-grade LMS-UB was diagnosed with the histopathological e…

Rectal leiomyosarcoma is a very rare entity. Surgery is the main treatment, but the place of radiation therapy remains unclear. A 67-year-old woman was referred for a few-weeks' history of bleeding and anal pain intensified during defecation. Pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a rectal lesion and biopsies revealed a leiomyosarcoma of the lower rectum. She was free of metastasis on computed tomography imaging. The patient refused radical surgery. After discussion by a multidisciplinary team, the patient received pre-operative long-course radiotherapy followed by surgery. The tumor w…

PURPOSE: Uterine leiomyosarcoma is a rare and aggressive tumor known for its drug resistance and metastatic potential. The standard first-line treatment typically involves anthracycline-based chemotherapy or a combination of gemcitabine and docetaxel; however, there is currently no established second-line treatment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of doxorubicin plus ifosfamide as a potential second-line treatment for uterine leiomyosarcoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective, single-center, single-arm study. We reviewed the tumor registr…

Leiomyosarcoma is a rare type of tumor of smooth muscle cells that can occur anywhere in the body. However, it typically occurs in the retroperitoneum, intra-abdominal sites, and uterus in people over 65. Here is a case of a 71-year-old male with a history of melanoma of the skin who presented with a rapidly enlarging, non-tender lump at his left lateral thigh area that was later diagnosed as pleomorphic dedifferentiated leiomyosarcoma. The patient underwent radical resection of the tumor and the attached vastus lateralis muscle and partial lateral collateral ligament, followed by radiation th…

Sinonasal leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare and aggressive mesenchymal tumor with smooth muscle differentiation. The sinonasal tract is an unusual primary site for LMS, as scant smooth muscle exists in this location, with only 75 cases reported in the English literature including the case presented herein. Sinonasal LMS is considered an aggressive head and neck tumor with significant potential for recurrence and metastasis. Since recurrence is high and the potential for late metastasis exists, lifelong follow-up in these patients would be beneficial, especially among those with previous history o…

BACKGROUND: Uterine leiomyosarcoma (uLMS) are rare and malignant tumors that arise in the myometrium cells and whose diagnosis is based on histopathological features. Identifying diagnostic biomarkers for uLMS is a challenge due to molecular heterogeneity and the scarcity of samples. In vivo and in vitro models for uLMS are urgently needed. Knockout female mice for the catalytic subunit of the immunoproteasome PSMB9 (MIM:177045) develop spontaneous uLMS. This study aimed to analyze the role of PSMB9 in uLMS tumorigenesis and patient outcome.
METHODS: Molecular data from 3 non-related uLMS coh…

BACKGROUND: Leiomyosarcomas of urinary bladder constitute rare malignant sarcomas with very few cases reported in literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we present a case of bladder leiomyosarcoma in a well-preserved female. She failed to respond to standard chemotherapy and had a rapidly downhill course with unusual metastases in anastomotic site and peritoneum soon after surgery. Despite multimodality management including resection of primary and metastatic site, systemic therapy and pelvic radiotherapy, our patient had dismal prognosis with an overall survival of 1.7 years.
CONCLUSION: Leio…

Small intestinal malignant tumor accounts for about 3% of all malignant tumors in the gastrointestinal tract, among which 13% are leiomyosarcoma (LMS). In addition, epithelioid LMS is of very rare occurrence. As small intestinal malignant tumors are initially asymptomatic and nonspecific, diagnosis is often delayed, and this can lead to large tumor at the time of detection and lead to intussusception. We observed ileocolonic intussusception in an 80-year-old male patient who was admitted to the hospital with a complaint of abdominal pain and palpable mass on right lower quadrant. The laparosco…

Vulvar sarcomas located in the Bartholin's gland area are extremely uncommon mesenchymal vulvar tumors. These neoplasms can be mistaken as B … lusion, wide local tumor excision with free surgical margins is a good option of surgery for vulvar leiomyosarcomas. In recurrences, a new extensive surgical resection of the lesion and radiotherapy are suggested. Ipsilateral lympadenectomy is indicated when there is a pathologic lymph node. Chemotherapy is provided in cases of distal metastases.

Primary leiomyosarcoma of the fallopian tube is a very rare neoplasm with descriptions limited to case reports. We present the case of a 46-yr-old woman with a history of renal transplantation in whom a primary leiomyosarcoma of the fallopian tube was identified incidentally following hysterectomy and bilateral salpingectomy undertaken for a uterine fibroid. The tumor demonstrated classic morphological and immunohistochemical features of a leiomyosarcoma. It appeared localized to the fallopian tube and was completely resected. Adjuvant therapy was not given but active surveillance initiated. A…

BACKGROUND: Leiomyosarcoma is a rare tumor that could originate from the gastrointestinal tract, uterus, kidney, retroperitoneum, and the soft tissues of the extremities. It accounts for only 1% of all gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors and primary leiomyosarcoma of the stomach is extremely rare. Most cases reported as leiomyosarcoma of the stomach before the development of KIT immunohistochemistry might be gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) of the stomach and only 18 cases of leiomyosarcoma of the stomach have been reported since early 2000s. We report here a patient with leiomyosarcoma…

Leiomyosarcoma usually arises in the uterus, abdominal and urologic viscera, and walls of large and small blood vessels. However, primary adrenal leiomyosarcoma is extremely rare with only 39 cases previously reported in English-language literature. We report a case of a 29-year-old previously healthy woman with an incidentally found right adrenal-occupying lesion. CT scan revealed a right adrenal mass measuring 3.3×3.4 cm in size. The tumor was successfully removed by laparoscopic adrenalectomy. Postoperative histopathologic examination showed spindle cells arranged in interlacing fascicles w…

BACKGROUND: The concept of GIST was established in 1998, clearly differentiating between gastrointestinal leiomyosarcoma and GISTs among gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors. Lymph node metastasis is extremely rare in true gastrointestinal leiomyosarcoma, and there are no reports of malignant transformation from leiomyoma.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was an old woman who had undergone endoscopic mucosal resection for an Is polyp on the left side of the transverse colon at the age of 73. She was diagnosed with leiomyoma with positive surgical margins. Subsequently, she presented to our insti…

BACKGROUND: Leiomyosarcomas (LMSs) of the colon are extremely rare and highly aggressive. Although treatment of gastrointestinal LMS is not standardized, surgical resection is generally performed. The fact that the tumors are usually large at the time of diagnosis may explain why no report on laparoscopic resection of a colonic LMS has appeared.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old male presented with hematochezia 1 month in duration. Abdominal examination including palpation was normal. The levels of several blood tumor markers were normal. Colonoscopy revealed a polypoid lesion approximately 30…

RATIONALE: Primary intracranial leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is an extremely rare tumor in the central nervous system (CNS), and usually seen in immunocompromised individuals. Only a few cases of primary intracranial LMS have been documented in the literature and no study focused on their MRI findings. We reported a case of primary intracranial leiomyosarcoma in a immunocompetent patient and review its imaging features.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 20-year-old female was admitted to our hospital, complaining with nausea, weight loss and progressive headache in recent 2 years.
DIAGNOSIS: The magnetic resonanc…

Portal vein leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a very rare entity with poor prognosis. Only few cases have been reported in the literature. We report the case of a 53-year-old man with portal vein LMS presenting as a hilar tumor and causing cholestasis. The tumor measured 10 cm and was responsible for right portal vein thrombosis and compression of the biliary convergence. A right hepatectomy with hilar en bloc resection was performed with portal vein and biliary reconstruction. Pathology confirmed the complete resection of a well-differentiated leiomyosarcoma of the portal vein. The postoperative outcom…

OBJECTIVES: There are no current established pathognomonic diagnostic features for uterine leiomyosarcomas in the pre- or perioperative setting. Recent inadvertent upstaging of this rare malignancy during laparoscopic morcellation of a presumed fibroid has prompted widespread debate among clinicians regarding the safety of current surgical techniques for management of fibroids. This study aims to conduct a systematic review investigating significant diagnostic features in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of uterine leiomyosarcomas.
METHODS: A comprehensive database search was conducted guided…

Nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT) catalyzes the rate-limiting step in NAD synthesis and is up-regulated in several human malignancies, including breast, colon, prostate, thyroid, gastric, and several hematopoietic malignancies. In some malignancies, such as gastric, thyroid, and prostate carcinomas, higher NAMPT expression correlates with deeper tumor invasion, increased metastatic potential and chemotherapy resistance. We employed tissue microarray immunohistochemistry to examine NAMPT expression in benign skeletal and smooth muscle, leiomyomas, leiomyosarcomas (graded low-, inte…

Leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata (LPD) is a rare entity that is characterized by the presence of multiple subperitoneal or peritoneal smooth muscle nodules throughout the peritoneal surface mimicking a malignant process. LPD follows a benign course in general, and it is often found incidentally during abdominal surgery. There have been reported cases of LPD with malignant degeneration although the association is uncertain. Concurrent finding of LPD and leiomyosarcoma of the pelvis is very rare that could be coincidental, malignant transformation of LPD to leiomyosarcoma, or progression …
