A Systematic Review of Systematic Reviews on the Use of Aromatase Inhibitors for the Treatment of Endometriosis: The Evidence to Date.

Endometriosis is a chronic gynecologic condition that affects around 6-10% of reproductive age women. This clinical entity is characterized with pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, and infertility which are the most often presenting symptoms. Aromatase P450 is the key enzyme for ovarian estrogen biosynthesis and there is evidence that endometriotic lesions express aromatase and are able to synthesize their own estrogens. Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are potent drugs that suppress the estrogen synthesis via suppression of aromatase. We performed a systematic review of systematic reviews and n

Biopsychosocial approach to male chronic pelvic pain syndrome: recent treatments and trials.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) is a common urologic condition that can cause significant disability in affected individuals. Physiologic explanations of chronic pain are often incomplete; appropriate management of CPPS includes recognition of biological, psychological, and social elements, known as the biopsychosocial model. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this narrative review is to investigate treatments for men with CPPS, with a special focus on those utilizing the biopsychosocial model of care. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted on the electronic databases

Correlation of anti-TNF-a biological therapy with periodontal conditions and osteonecrosis in autoimmune patients: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aims to investigate the impact of tumor necrotic factor alpha inhibitors in suppressing bone resorption in periodontitis, and its potential to cause osteonecrosis. Extensive electronic research was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines, which connected various aspects of anti-TNF-a (anti-tumor necrosis factor-a) to periodontitis and osteonecrosis patients. BACKGROUND: TNF-a inhibitors are broadly indicated in the treatment of autoimmune patients with possible joint resorption and increased inflammatory processes such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammat

Celiac Disease: An Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Evidence-Based Nutrition Practice Guideline.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system of genetically susceptible individuals elicits a reaction to gluten causing small intestine damage. If left undiagnosed and untreated, the resulting nutrition malabsorption can lead to anemia, bone disease, growth faltering, or other consequences. The condition is lifelong and lacks a cure; the only treatment is lifelong adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD). This diet is challenging to follow and adversely influences quality of life; however, it is essential to ensure intestinal recovery and prevent future negative health con

ESPEN guideline on nutritional support for polymorbid medical inpatients.

BACKGROUND: Disease-related malnutrition in polymorbid medical inpatients is a highly prevalent syndrome associated with significantly increased morbidity, disability, short- and long-term mortality, impaired recovery from illness, and cost of care. AIM: As there are uncertainties in applying disease-specific guidelines to patients with multiple conditions, our aim was to provide evidence-based recommendations on nutritional support for the polymorbid patient population hospitalized in medical wards. METHODS: This update adheres to the standard operating procedures for ESPEN guidelines. We d

Impacts of ezetimibe on risks of various types of cancers: a meta-analysis and systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Ezetimibe is a widely used medication to reduce the plasma cholesterol level, particularly low-density lipoprotein level. However, its impact on cancer remains controversial. Here, its impacts on risks of various types of cancers were meta-analyzed. METHODS: PubMed and Cochrane Library electronic databases were searched and randomized controlled trials with followed up for at least 24 weeks were selected and included. The experimental group was defined as those patients treated with ezetimibe alone or with other medications, and the control group was defined as those who received

A systematic review investigating the role and impact of pharmacist interventions in cardiac rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a predominant cause of mortality. Pharmacists play an important role in secondary prevention of CVD, however, their role in cardiac rehabilitation is under-reported and services are under-utilised. AIM: To explore the role of pharmacists in cardiac rehabilitation, the impact of their interventions on patient outcomes, and prospects of future role development. METHOD: Databases searched were PubMed, Embase, Medline, Cochrane Library, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and PsycINFO from January 2006 to October 2021. Ra

The efficacy of Shenghua Decoction supplementation after early medical abortion: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

AIMS: Shenghua Decoction (SHD) is a well-known classic herbal formula documented in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that has been widely applied during the postpartum period in Chinese communities for several years. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the influence of SHD as an adjuvant treatment for early medical abortion using a combination of mifepristone followed by misoprostol. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis was reported using 2020 PRISMA guidelines. Eight databases were searched from their establishment to February 28, 2022, for randomi

Effectiveness and Safety of Chronic Migraine Preventive Treatments: A Systematic Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous medications are used for the preventive treatment of chronic migraine (CM), including oral treatments, onabotulinumtoxinA (onabotA; BOTOX), and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). Despite substantial clinical trial evidence, less is published about the real-world experience of these treatments based on data routinely collected from a variety of sources. This systematic review assessed real-world evidence on the effectiveness and safety of preventive treatments for CM in adults. METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE, Embase, and the Coc

Efficacy and safety of allergen immunotherapy in patients with allergy to molds: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) with mould extracts has been performed for many years but the final demonstration of its clinical efficacy is still missing, due to the small number of studies and their inconsistent results. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review efficacy and safety of AIT for the treatment of respiratory allergies to moulds. DESIGN: The primary outcomes were safety and reduction of symptoms (Symptom Score, SS) and medication use (Medication Score, MS) in patients treated with AIT compared to controls. The strength of the evidence was graded based on the risk of bias, c

Medical management after coronary stent implantation: a review.

IMPORTANCE: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with stents is currently the most commonly performed coronary revascularization procedure; hence, optimizing post-PCI outcomes is important for all physicians treating such patients. OBJECTIVE: To review the contemporary literature on optimal medical therapy after PCI. EVIDENCE REVIEW: We performed a comprehensive search of the PubMed and Cochrane Library databases for manuscripts on medical therapy after PCI, published between 2000 and February 2013. Bibliographies of the retrieved studies were searched by hand for other relevant studies.

Quality improvement in neurology: AAN epilepsy quality measures: Report of the Quality Measurement and Reporting Subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy is a common neurologic condition with significant personal, societal, medical, and economic burdens. There are considerable gaps in the quality of care delivered. Measuring the quality of care delivered is the first step to its improvement. Performance measures are easily identified and quantitated ways to assess whether specific activities were carried out during a patient encounter. Therefore, epilepsy performance measures were derived through a standardized systematic process and may be the basis for pay-for-performance initiatives and maintenance of certification requir

Over-the-counter (OTC) medications to reduce cough as an adjunct to antibiotics for acute pneumonia in children and adults.

BACKGROUND: Cough is often distressing for patients with pneumonia. Accordingly they often use over-the-counter (OTC) cough medications (mucolytics or cough suppressants). These might provide relief in reducing cough severity, but suppression of the cough mechanism might impede airway clearance and cause harm. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of OTC cough medications as an adjunct to antibiotics in children and adults with pneumonia. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library 2011, Issue 3) which contains the Acute Respi

Fundoplication versus post-operative medication for gastro-oesophageal reflux in children with neurological impairment undergoing gastrostomy.

BACKGROUND: Children with neurological impairments (NI) frequently experience feeding difficulties which can lead to malnutrition and growth failure. Gastrostomy feeding is now the preferred method of providing nutritional support to children with NI who are unable to feed adequately by mouth. Complications may arise as a result of gastrostomy placement and the development or worsening of gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) has been widely reported. This has led to the frequent use of surgical anti-reflux treatment in the form of a fundoplication, or other Anti-Reflux Procedures. Fundoplication is

Prevalence and factors influencing medication adherence after acute myocardial infarction: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Adherence to evidence-based secondary prevention medications is important for long-term management after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Previous reviews have examined medication adherence and related factors but remain limited by heterogeneity in adherence measures and reliance primarily on narrative synthesis. AIM: We aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of objectively measured medication adherence and identify associated factors after AMI. METHOD: Five databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Ovid MEDLINE) were searched from January 1, 2000, to

Peripheral nerve block in patients with medication-overuse headache: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Medication-overuse headache (MOH) is a disabling condition, particularly in settings with limited access to advanced preventive therapies. Peripheral nerve blocks (PNB) may offer a pragmatic option to reduce headache burden during MOH management. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of PNB in adults with MOH. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review in January 2025 using Scopus, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. Randomized clinical trials comparing PNB with standard of care or other active interventions in adults with MOH were eligible. Primary outcom

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF CLINICAL ENDOCRINOLOGISTS AND AMERICAN COLLEGE OF ENDOCRINOLOGY DISEASE STATE CLINICAL REVIEW: MANAGEMENT OF ACROMEGALY PATIENTS: WHAT IS THE ROLE OF PRE-OPERATIVE MEDICAL THERAPY?

OBJECTIVE: Acromegaly is a complex disease characterized by growth hormone (GH) excess originating in most cases from a pituitary tumor. The goals of treatment include removing the tumor or reducing tumor burden, normalizing GH secretion and insulin-like growth factor 1 levels, and preserving normal pituitary function if possible. Surgery by an experienced neurosurgeon is still considered first-line therapy, especially in cases with small tumors. In the last few decades, significant progress in the development of selective pharmacologic agents has greatly facilitated the management of active a
