Long-Term Outcomes of the Boston Type I Keratoprosthesis in the Management of Corneal Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency.

PURPOSE: To report the long-term outcomes of the Boston type I keratoprosthesis (KPro) in the management of limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). METHODS: Retrospective review of KPro procedures performed by a single surgeon from May 1, 2004, to January 1, 2015. RESULTS: One hundred seventy-three KPro procedures were performed in 149 eyes, including 68 in 54 eyes with LSCD. Glaucoma (48% vs. 82%, P < 0.0001) and a history of ≥2 keratoplasties (39% vs. 79%, P < 0.0001) were significantly less common in eyes with LSCD. Preoperative corrected distance visual acuity was ≥20/200 in 7% of eyes with

Comparative analyses of the differentiation and stemness status of corneal epithelial cell lines in varying culture conditions.

Cell lines of human corneal epithelial cells (CEC) are widely used as alternatives to primary CEC cultures to understand corneal biology. This study analyzes the expression of differentiation, junctional, limbal and pluripotent stem cell markers of two immortalized cell lines, HCEC (human corneal epithelial cells) and HCLE (human corneal limbal epithelial cells), cultured under different conditions, by flow cytometry, qPCR or immunofluorescence, to identify the culture condition most akin to the native corneal epithelium. Such cells are useful in studies relating to de-differentiation and repr

Sludging: A Postoperative Clinical Finding After Ocular Surface Stem Cell Transplantation.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to describe a postoperative clinical finding coined "sludging." Sludging is defined as a noninflammatory vascular phenomenon observed following ocular surface stem cell transplantation (OSST) characterized by dilated blood vessels localized to the graft. Also, the aim of our study was to identify associated risk factors and the impact on OSST graft outcomes. METHODS: A total of 261 eyes of 196 patients who underwent OSST to treat severe limbal stem cell deficiency from 2006 to 2016 were included in this retrospective review. Clinical characteristics we

Morphological factors associated with giant vacuoles with I-pores in Schlemm's canal endothelial cells of human eyes: A serial block-face scanning electron microscopy study.

Increased intraocular pressure (IOP) is the main risk factor for primary open-angle glaucoma and results from impaired drainage of aqueous humor (AH) through the trabecular outflow pathway. AH must pass the inner wall (IW) endothelium of Schlemm's canal (SC), which is a monolayer held together by tight junctions, to exit the eye. One route across the IW is through giant vacuoles (GVs) with their basal openings and intracellular pores (I-pores). AH drainage through the trabecular outflow pathway is segmental. Whether more GVs with both basal openings and I-pores are present in the active flow a

Establishment and Characterization of an Acute Model of Ocular Hypertension by Laser-Induced Occlusion of Episcleral Veins.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to develop and characterize a laser-induced model of acute intraocular hypertension that permits the study of the anterior segment of the eye. METHODS: CD1 mice aged 5 and 8 weeks were examined for elevation of IOP induced by laser photocoagulation. We compared between occlusion of episcleral veins alone and when combined with 270° limbal vessel occlusion. Anterior chamber angle, corneal thickness, and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness were evaluated by anterior- and posterior-segment optical coherence tomography (OCT). Additionally, at day 7 post-pro

Recurrence rate, time to recurrence, and associated factors after primary pterygium excision with conjunctival-limbal autograft: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Pterygium recurrence remains a major postoperative challenge in equatorial regions with high ultraviolet (UV) exposure. Although several clinical and inflammatory factors have been proposed as predictors, evidence remains inconsistent. This study aimed to estimate the recurrence rate after primary pterygium excision with conjunctival-limbal autograft and to explore potential demographic, clinical, surgical, and systemic inflammatory factors associated with recurrence in a Colombian cohort. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included patients ≥ 18 years undergoing primary ptery
