AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the anxiety levels of the parents of infants with cleft lip and palate (CLP) before and after primary lip surgery.

Median cleft lip with nasal dermoid is a very rare occurrence. Midline nasal dermoid results from the abnormal fusion of embryological processes. They can present as asymptomatic midline nasal swelling, infection, or meningitis due to intracranial extension. Median cleft lip also results from failure of fusion of embryological processes and can be complete or incomplete or associated with other congenital anomalies or as a part of syndrome. We present a rare combination of both in a 7-month-old female child who was surgically treated.

Lymphoepithelial-like carcinoma (LEC) is a rare malignant neoplasm, which can be associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. Lip enlargement may be an important symptom of either systemic or local diseases. On the basis of selected age-matched clinical cases we present the possible causes of lip swelling. We describe the most representative symptoms and recommend treatment of these pathologies. We differentiate lip swelling in Miescher syndrome, monosymptomatic form of Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome, lip swelling in erythema multiforme and Stevens-Johnson syndrome and lip hemangioma and mucous extravasation cyst. We compare different causes of lip edema and indicate the most helpful diagnostic and treatment methods.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and palate repair requires a deep and small surgical field and is usually performed by surgeons wearing surgical loupes. Surgeons with loupes can obtain a wider surgical view, although headlights are required for the deepest procedures. Surgical microscopes offer comfort and a clear and magnification-adjustable surgical site that can be shared with the whole team, including observers, and easily recorded to further the education of junior surgeons. Recognition that a fetus can scarlessly heal in intrauterine life led to various animal studies in the mid 1980s exploring the possibility of fetal cleft lip/palate surgery. The idea of scarless cleft repair seemed like a possible dream after the promising results from the early animal studies.
