Aneurysmal bone cyst of the mandible.

The aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign, solitary lesion of bone which is most commonly found in the long bones and vertebral column. Its occurrence in the mandible is uncommon. Because of its infrequent appearance, the ABC may be mistaken for neoplastic lesions. In the past, management has consisted of curettage, cryotherapy and local resection. In this publication we present a case of ABC of the mandible. We include a review of the literature, a discussion of the etiology, pathogenesis and management of this interesting lesion.

Multiple neurofibromatosis associated with mandibular growth and facial asymmetry.

Multiple neurofibromatosis develops with a plethora of clinical signs and symptoms. Oral manifestations have been reported only in 4% to 7% of the affected persons. Changes in the facial skeleton are sometimes associated with the disease. A rare case of multiple neurofibromatosis with pronounced facial asymmetry and mandibular overgrowth is presented and discussed.

Dentinogenic ghost cell tumor revisited from a single institution in China with focus on adenoid ameloblastoma-like features.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to identify adenoid ameloblastoma (AdAM) from previously diagnosed cases of dentinogenic ghost cell tumor (DGCT), and gain insight to the possible relationship between AdAM and DGCT. METHODS: DGCT cases diagnosed between 2006 and 2022 were re-examined with focus on the AdAM-like features. RESULTS: A total of nine patients were included. Seven patients were males and two were females. The mean age was 38.0 ± 16.0 years. Five tumors occurred in the maxilla and four in the mandible, with a remarkable predilection for the posterior regions of both jaws. Microsco

Mandibular osteosclerotic lesion of a parotid salivary duct carcinoma: demonstration of the neural tropism of these tumors.

INTRODUCTION: Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is an uncommon entity of salivary gland cancers with a poor prognosis due to local aggressiveness or distant recurrences involving lymph nodes, lung, and long bones, in which secondary lesions are usually osteolytic. The authors report the first case of mandibular SDC, atypical due to its osteosclerotic presentation and its site, attributed to aggressive neural spread of the tumor along the trigeminal nerve. CASE STUDY: This asymptomatic osteosclerotic bone involvement was diagnosed based on pathological enhancement of the trigeminal nerve demonstra

Extraosseous ameloblastoma: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: We report a case of peripheral extraosseous ameloblastoma in a female patient presenting with a soft-tissue growth on the lingual mandibular region, initially resembling a granulomatous lesion. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis. This rare tumor (1-5% of cases) must be considered in differential diagnosis of oral soft tissue swellings. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old female of Indian origin presented to our department with a complaint of growth in the left lingual aspect of the mandible. The growth is papillary in appearance with no evident radiogra

Perioperative management of a patient with brown tumour presenting with severe hypercalcaemia.

Brown tumours represent a rare manifestation of hyperparathyroidism, with mandibular involvement being exceptionally uncommon. We present a challenging case of a woman in her early 30s with primary hyperparathyroidism presenting as a large mandibular brown tumour for parathyroidectomy, complicated by severe hypercalcaemia and difficult airway management. This case highlights the complex anaesthetic considerations required when significant metabolic derangement meets anatomical challenges, emphasising the importance of meticulous perioperative management.

Numb chin syndrome: What all oral health care professionals should know.

BACKGROUND: Numb chin syndrome (NCS) is a rare sensory neuropathy involving the mental nerve. Symptoms of NCS are often overlooked because of their apparent innocent nature; however, owing to the frequent association of NCS with malignancies, the opposite should be the rule. Oral health care professionals may be the first to encounter patients with NCS and should be aware of its clinical characteristics in an effort to decrease patient morbidity and mortality. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: A search in PubMed (MEDLINE) and the Cochrane Library was performed using the terms numb chin syndrome, num

MR appearance of a rare ameloblastic fibroma with formation of dental hard tissues with histopathologic correlation: a case report.

An ameloblastic fibroma with formation of dental hard tissues, which the classical name is ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO), is a rare type of mixed odontogenic tumor. An 8-year-old boy was diagnosed with AFO, with an inhomogeneous high signal within the lesion shown by T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Computed tomography (CT) imaging revealed a unilocular low CT value area of 24 × 19 × 26 mm with buccolingual bony expansion and cortical bone thinning on the left side of the mandible including the crown of the mandibular left second molar. In addition, multiple calcified bodies w

A case of benign osteogenic tumour in Homo naledi: Evidence for peripheral osteoma in the U.W. 101-1142 mandible.

The reported incidence of neoplasia in the extinct hominin record is rare. We describe here the first palaeopathological analysis of an osteogenic lesion in the extinct hominin Homo naledi from Dinaledi Cave (Rising Star), South Africa. The lesion presented as an irregular bony growth, found on the right lingual surface of the body of the adult mandible U.W. 101-1142. The growth was macroscopically evaluated and internally imaged using micro-focus x-ray computed tomography (μCT). A detailed description and differential diagnosis were undertaken using gross and micromorphology, and we conclude

Multiple myeloma presenting as mandibular pain.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a systemic malignancy of plasma cells defined by monoclonal production of circulating immunoglobulins. Bone pain is a presenting feature in the majority of cases. Treatment may involve intravenous use of bisphosphonates, chemotherapy or haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Here, we illustrate a first presentation of MM in a patient with mandibular pain and discuss radiographic, diagnostic and treatment challenges of orofacial issues in patients with MM. CASE REPORT: A 69-year-old lady presented to an emergency oral surgery clinic with a month-long h

Familial gigantiform cementoma: distinctive clinical features of a large Chinese pedigree.

Familial gigantiform cementoma is a rare benign fibrocemento-osseous lesion of the jaws that can cause severe facial deformity. It has an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance, but varies in its phenotype. It is more common in white, African, and East-Asian patients. Here we report what is to our knowledge the first distinctive Chinese family with familial gigantiform cementoma involving 4 generations and 13 patients, and which suggests that the tumour presents with 3 distinctive growth phrases.

Mandibular osteoma in the encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis.

INTRODUCTION: Encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis is a rare congenital disorder characterized by an abnormal development of adipose tissue, and is of unknown pathogenesis. Catherine Haberland and Maurice Perou first diagnosed this disorder in 1970. To our knowledge, approximately 25 patients have been reported with this diagnosis but so far, only 1 patient has been reported in Poland by Roszkowski and Dabrowski in 1997. At that time she was a 13-year-old girl, who was neurosurgically treated. CASE REPORT: The authors followed the same patient (now 21 years old), who was referred to the Depar
