The authors investigated the incidence of thalassemia traits and hemoglobinopathies in western Liguria, where up to 70% of people comes from other italian regions, particularly from the South. The authors screened 442 primary school pupils in Albenga and Andora (Savona). Laboratory investigations permitted to detect 19 thalassemia trait carrier subjects (4.30% of the total examined): 12 of them were diagnosed heterozygous for beta-thalassemia, 6 for alpha-thalassemia, and 1 for Hb S. Authors would underline that more than half of the screening positive subjects resulted carrier of beta-thalass

Cancer-associated cachexia is a disorder characterized by loss of body weight with specific losses of skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. Cachexia is driven by a variable combination of reduced food intake and metabolic changes, including elevated energy expenditure, excess catabolism and inflammation. Cachexia is highly associated with cancers of the pancreas, oesophagus, stomach, lung, liver and bowel; this group of malignancies is responsible for half of all cancer deaths worldwide. Cachexia involves diverse mediators derived from the cancer cells and cells within the tumour microenvironmen

Obesity is a heterogeneous chronic disease in which excess adiposity increases the risk of morbidity and mortality. The Obesity Association, a division of the American Diabetes Association (ADA), developed comprehensive, evidence-based guidelines on screening, diagnosis, evaluation, and staging of overweight and obesity in adults. Monitoring for consistent increases in weight over time may facilitate early intervention to prevent obesity and its complications, and screening for excess adiposity should be performed at least annually using BMI. The recommended diagnostic criteria for overweight

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is characterized by excess adiposity and reduced muscle mass and function. In 2022, the Sarcopenic Obesity Global Leadership Initiative (SOGLI) proposed a diagnostic algorithm to standardize SO identification by integrating screening, diagnostic assessment, and staging.
AIM: This review evaluates the application of the SOGLI algorithm, identifying strengths, limitations, and potential areas for refinement.
METHODS: A narrative review with systematic citation tracking was conducted (April 2022-August 2025). Literature searches in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of

High-throughput lipidomics is increasingly important for large-scale studies and clinical applications. While shotgun lipidomics enables rapid analysis, it suffers from limitations such as carryover, ion suppression, and limited structural specificity. Acoustic droplet ejection mass spectrometry (ADE-MS) presents a novel approach, enabling touchless nanoliter-scale sample introduction at high speed, precision, and accuracy. Initially designed for single-droplet injection, ADE-MS was adapted for direct infusion with stable signals. In this study, we developed and benchmarked a scalable workflow

Advances in neonatal care improved the survival of many preterm infants, but also increased the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Numerous risk factors have been associated with the development of ROP, the most important of which are: low birth weight, early gestational age at delivery, and duration of oxygen therapy. Screening premature infants is a critical factor for any prevention and treatment protocol. The Retinopathy of Prematurity Subcommittee of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) have

The screening programme for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in Denmark is based on clinical examination and selective ultrasound examination of children with established risk factors for DDH. This method of screening may not reduce the proportion of lately diagnosed cases. Universal screening for DDH is cost-efficient and may eliminate late diagnosis of DDH and minimise the need for corrective surgery. In this review, we propose developing a new universal screening programme for DDH in Denmark.

Inherited resistance to activated protein C (APC) has been recently recognized as a novel cause underlying venous thrombophilia. In most cases APC resistance is due to a single point mutation in the factor V gene leading to a replacement of Arg506 with Gln (factor V Leiden). Factor V Leiden allele is present in about 5% of the Caucasian individuals (Europeans, Jews, Israeli Arabs, and Indians) and is virtually absent in Africans, Asians, and races with Asian ancestry such as Amerindians, Eskimos, and Polynesians; this suggests a single origin of the mutation, which has been proven by haplotype

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC), is a highly prevalent malignant tumor worldwide, and early screening is key to improving its prognosis. Currently, CRC screening research is growing exponentially, but its core research hotspots, evolutionary trends, and interdisciplinary features are not clear. In this study, we used bibliometric analysis to analyze the distribution of literature, research hotspots, and cutting-edge developments in the field of CRC screening worldwide, and to provide a scientific basis for optimizing screening strategies.
METHODS: Publications on CRC screening from 2015 t

The aim of cancer screening is to identify pre-malignant conditions, which can be removed or treated, or earlier-stage disease, for which treatment is more likely to be curative, in non-symptomatic individuals. Currently, screening programmes are being consolidated for five cancer types (breast, prostate, cervical, colorectal and lung) and several other cancer types are the focus of specific initiatives. Cancer screening is at a point of potential major transformation owing to technological advances in detection. In this Review, we first recapitulate the general principles of cancer screening.

Delirium is a common, critical condition in adults receiving care in intensive care units, requiring effective screening tools for early detection. To systematically compare the diagnostic performance of delirium screening tools for adults receiving care in ICUs, we conducted a comprehensive search across nine databases up to August 1, 2025, followed by a network meta-analysis of diagnostic test accuracy. Fifty studies involving 6042 patients were included. The S-PTD demonstrated optimal diagnostic performance, with high pooled sensitivity (0.922) and specificity (0.977). The CAM-ICU showed ou

There is a growing awareness that body CT scans contain rich cardiometabolic information that can be leveraged for additional patient benefits. However, the clinical implementation of opportunistic CT screening in routine practice has been hindered by valuable yet onerous manual measurements and subjective assessments. Explainable artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are now poised to change this. The potential impact of opportunistic screening is further enhanced by the large volume of CT scans being obtained. In this "How I Do It" installment, the authors briefly outline some current appr

Introduction: The bidirectional relationship between sarcopenia and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the elderly creates a detrimental metabolic cycle where insulin resistance accelerates muscle wasting. In resource-limited primary care settings, the lack of advanced diagnostic imaging necessitates the validation of accessible, non-invasive screening tools, such as anthropometric parameters, muscle strength, physical performance, and glycemic control, as surrogate markers for identifying muscle mass depletion. Aim: To evaluate correlations between anthropometric parameters, muscle strength,
