Breast cancer is a common manifestation of an underlying genetic susceptibility to cancer, and 5% to 10% of all breast cancers are associated with a germline mutation in a known risk allele. Detection of mutations has implications for targeted screening and prevention strategies for probands, and for genetic counseling and testing of their family members. This report presents a case involving a 35-year-old woman with no family history of breast or ovarian cancer who presented with a palpable right breast lump. Imaging revealed multiple bilateral breast masses and right axillary adenopathy, and

BACKGROUND: The mastectomy site is usually assessed by clinical examination and ultrasonography for recurrence of breast cancer, although post-surgical and radiotherapy changes limit the accuracy of these methods. MRI has been used successfully but it remains an expensive modality and may not be readily available. Scintimammography is an alternative method which has the advantage of not being affected by post-operative morphological changes.
AIM: To evaluate the usefulness of planar Tc-MIBI scintimammography and supine Tc-MIBI SPECT in the detection of chest wall recurrence post-mastectomy.

BACKGROUND: According to recently published data, prophylactic mastectomy (PM) appears to prevent about 90% of the expected malignant neoplasms in women with a family history of breast cancer.
OBJECTIVES: To identify the frequency of high-risk lesions in PM specimens and to determine occurrence of any new primary breast cancer following PM.
DESIGN: We performed a retrospective study of women undergoing unilateral or bilateral PM. Medical charts and pathologic findings of 35 patients who underwent bilateral mastectomies at University Hospital, Syracuse, NY, from 1989 to 1996 were reviewed. Pa

High-dose megestrol acetate, a synthetic progestin, has been advocated recently in treating patients with metastatic breast carcinoma; no significant increase in adverse effects has been reported. This report describes a patient with jaundice and intrahepatic cholestasis after high-dose megestrol acetate therapy. This cholestatic lesion may have a pathogenesis similar to that observed with estrogens and oral contraceptives.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The perioperative period may influence immune function in cancer patients, with anesthetic agents potentially contributing to immunosuppression. This study evaluated the differential impact of fentanyl and remifentanil on immune cell populations in breast cancer (BCa) patients undergoing surgery.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with histologically confirmed BCa who were treated with modified radical mastectomy or breast-conserving surgery followed by radiotherapy were included in the study. Anesthesia was administered using either fentanyl (n=12) or remifentanil (n=18).

The aim of this study was to analyze outcomes of patients who had prior abdominal operations and underwent DIEP flap breast reconstruction and to describe technical strategies to insure well-vascularized flap-harvest minimizing abdominal donor-site complications. All patients who underwent DIEP flap breast reconstruction between 2004 and 2014 were reviewed and divided into a control group (CG) and a scar group (SG). Patient demographics, operative details, flap and donor-site complications were analyzed and compared. For all of the scars, DIEP flap design was not modified, but a standardized a

In a prospective study the value of technetium-99m-sestamibi scintigraphy (MIBI scintigraphy) in staging axillary lymph node involvement in breast cancer patients was established. The study comprised 36 cases. The results of the staging were compared with physical and histological examination. MIBI scintigraphy had a sensitivity of 91% and a total accuracy of 81%. These percentages demonstrate the potential value of this technique; larger series will be needed to confirm our results.

Objectives Paget's disease of the breast is a rare condition that is often associated with underlying malignancy. Given the subtle mammographic findings, a multimodal imaging approach is essential for an early diagnosis. The objective of this study was to describe the clinical, multimodality imaging, and histopathological spectrum of histopathologically confirmed mammary Paget's disease in eight patients. Materials and methods This is a descriptive study of eight histopathologically confirmed patients with Paget's disease of the breast, identified over a 10-year period (2015-2025) at a tertiar

RATIONALE: Breast cancer represents a prevalent malignancy that primarily impacts women, with pronounced consequences on their overarching health. The major therapeutic approach, encompassing surgical procedures, can often culminate in mastectomy, potentially inciting psychological turmoil and disorders.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A patient was admitted to our facility on May 5, 2023, precipitated by the discovery of bilateral breast masses during a routine physical examination conducted 3 days before admission.
DIAGNOSIS: The breasts were symmetric, with the right nipple inverted and a palpable mass

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is amongst the commonest reasons for brain metastases involving 15-20% of the patients. Metastases discovered 10 or more years after the initial diagnosis of breast cancer are defined as late metastases and present a rare event. We present two cases of late brain metastases of breast cancer discovered 15 and 17 years after initial diagnosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a 46-year old female patient a 5 x 6 cm lesion in the breast was observed and was histologically diagnosed to be a breast invasive ductal carcinoma. Mastectomy was performed (TNM grade - T2N1bM0) with

Lymphoedema is the accumulation of fluids with the high-protein content in the intercellular space, which is the most common complication seen in patients with breast cancer. In this study, we discuss the case of a 67-year-old female operated case of the left modified radical mastectomy in 2012. After 9 years, she had recurrence on the right side and diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer Stage 3 B. She developed lymphoedema on the same side for which she was referred to physiotherapy for further management. Along with radiation treatment, physiotherapy intervention such as complete decongest

Breast cancer related lymphedema (BCRL) develops as a consequence of surgical treatment and/or radiation therapy in a significant number of breast cancer patients. The etiology of this condition is multifactorial and has not yet been completely elucidated. Risk factors include high body mass index, radical surgical procedures (i.e. mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection), number of lymph nodes removed and number of metastatic lymph nodes, as well as nodal radiation, and chemotherapy. However, these predisposing factors explain only partially the BCRL occurrence, suggesting the possible

The characteristics of the mammary glandular tree have been studied in 100 human breasts removed for clinical cancer by radical mastectomy. The glandular tree was observed in whole thin (2 mm) stained sections under a stereoscopic microscope with removal of any suspicious or interesting change for histology. The results allow to categorize as follows the microenvironments in which mammary neoplasia may clinically appear. In respect to the main characteristics of the collateral glandular tree, clinical breast cancer may occur in: (a) atrophic breasts without lobules or lesions in 17% of cases;

With breast cancer cases escalating globally, the risk of uncommon sequelae like cutaneous metastatic carcinoma also rises. The identification of such metastases is essential in posttreatment surveillance. A 73-year-old woman with a history of hypertension and diabetes initially presented with postmenopausal bleeding, leading to the discovery and treatment of endometrial carcinoma via hysterosalpingo-oophorectomy. Nearly a decade later, she developed bilateral breast carcinoma, confirmed via radiology and biopsies, necessitating a bilateral-modified radical mastectomy. Her postoperative phase

We present a case of spiradenoma/cylindroma with admixed carcinoma of unknown origin, resolved using immunohistochemical and molecular loss-of-heterozygosity (LOH) profiling. The patient, a woman in her mid-70s, initially presented with separate mammary (ductal) carcinomas of the right and left breasts that were treated with radical mastectomies. For 9 years, the patient remained disease free until complaining of a slow-growing skin nodule on the lower back that was excised under clinical suspicion of metastatic mammary carcinoma. Histopathological exam revealed a benign eccrine spiradenoma/cy
