Association Between Maternal Prenatal Exposure to Household Air Pollution and Child Respiratory Health: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Maternal prenatal exposure to household air pollution (HAP) is a critical public health concern with potential long-term implications for child respiratory health. The objective of this study is to assess the level of association between prenatal household air pollution and child respiratory health, and to identify which HAP pollutants are associated with specific respiratory illnesses or symptoms and to what degree. Relevant studies were retrieved from PubMed databases up to April 27, 2010, and their reference lists were reviewed. Random effects models were applied to estimate summarized rela

Prenatal air pollutant exposure and preterm birth risk in primiparas of advanced maternal age residing in rural Henan province.

Direct evidence on the impact of air pollution on preterm birth (PTB) among advanced maternal age (AMA) primiparas is limited. This study examined the association between air pollution and PTB among 6,295 AMA primiparas in rural Henan Province. Logistic regression and distributed lag nonlinear models showed that prenatal exposure to carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) was associated with an increased PTB risk among AMA primiparas, while ozone (O3) exposure was inversely related to PTB risk (all P < 0.05). Moreover, the vulnera

Maternal exposure to dibutyl phthalate (DBP) impairs angiogenesis and AR signalling pathway through suppression of TGFB1I1 in hypospadias offspring.

Early exposure to dibutyl phthalate (DBP) can cause hypospadias in newborn foetuses. However, the underlying molecular mechanism is not well defined. Aberrant angiogenesis is associated with various dysplasias including urogenital deficits. In vivo and in vitro angiogenesis assays showed reduced angiogenesis in the hypospadias group and DBP exposed group. RNA-sequencing analysis of DBP-treated HUVECs revealed decreased expression of transforming growth factor beta 1-induced transcript 1 (TGFB1I1) and a significantly enriched angiogenesis-associated pathway. Further experiments revealed that de

Associations between prenatal multiple plasma metal exposure and newborn telomere length: Effect modification by maternal age and infant sex.

Exposure to metals during pregnancy may affect maternal and infant health. However, studies on the combined effects of metals on the telomere length (TL) of newborns are limited. A prospective cohort study was conducted among 1313 mother-newborn pairs in the Guangxi Zhuang Birth Cohort. The concentrations of metals in maternal plasma during the first trimester were measured using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. We explored the associations between nine plasma metals and newborn TL using generalized linear models (GLMs), principal component analysis (PCA), quantile g-computation (

Maternal and offspring genetic risk score analyses of fetal alcohol exposure and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder risk in offspring.

BACKGROUND: Studies investigating the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on childhood attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms using conventional observational designs have reported inconsistent findings, which may be affected by unmeasured confounding and maternal and fetal ability to metabolize alcohol. We used genetic variants from the alcohol metabolizing genes, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), as proxies for fetal alcohol exposure to investigate their association with risk of offspring ADHD symptoms around age 7-8 years. METHODS: We used da

Maternal exposure to childhood traumatic events, but not multi-domain psychosocial stressors, predict placental corticotrophin releasing hormone across pregnancy.

Maternal psychosocial stress increases the risk of adverse birth and postnatal outcomes for the mother and child, but the role of maternal exposure to childhood traumatic events (CTE) and multi-domain psychosocial stressors for the level and rise of placental Corticotrophin-Releasing Hormone (pCRH) across pregnancy has been understudied. In a sociodemographically and racially diverse sample of 1303 women (64% Black, 36% White/others) with low-medical risk pregnancies at enrollment from Shelby County, Tennessee, USA, blood samples were drawn twice, corresponding roughly to second and third trim…

Assessment of Maternal and Fetal Dolutegravir Exposure by Integrating Ex Vivo Placental Perfusion Data and Physiologically-Based Pharmacokinetic Modeling.

Antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy reduces the risk of vertical HIV-1 transmission. However, drug dosing is challenging as pharmacokinetics (PK) may be altered during pregnancy. We combined a pregnancy physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling approach with data on placental drug transfer to simulate maternal and fetal exposure to dolutegravir (DTG). First, a PBPK model for DTG exposure in healthy volunteers was established based on physiological and DTG PK data. Next, the model was extended with a fetoplacental unit using transplacental kinetics obtained by performing ex vivo

Maternal BDE-209 exposure during lactation causes testicular and epididymal toxicity through increased oxidative stress in peripubertal mice offspring.

Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209), a flame retardant, interferes with thyroid homeostasis and androgen biosynthesis. BDE-209 evokes hyperglycemia through impaired glucose homeostasis in rat liver. This study is in continuation to our earlier work for a better understanding of whether or not BDE-209 affects testicular and epididymal physiology in relation to oxidative status in peripupertal mice offspring. Lactating female Parkes mice were orally gavaged with 500 and 700 mg/kg body weight of BDE-209 in corn oil from postnatal day (PND) 1 to PND 28. Male pups of lactating dams were sacrificed at

Maternal exposure to di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) promotes epithelial-mesenchymal transition via regulation of autophagy in uroepithelial cell.

Maternal exposure to di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) induces hypospadias, but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here we hypothesize that aberrant activation of autophagy and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) are the leading cause of DBP-related hypospadias. Pregnant rats received DBP orally at a dose of 750 mg/kg/day during gestational days 14-18. In DBP-induced hypospadiac male offspring, immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining and Western blot showed increased expression of autophagy and EMT markers in genital tubercle (GT) tissue compared to the control. In addition, lower testosterone…

Maternal Resveratrol Treatment Reduces the Risk of Mammary Carcinogenesis in Female Offspring Prenatally Exposure to 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-Dioxin.

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) presents adverse effects on breast development/carcinogenesis. This study aimed to identify the ability of resveratrol (Res) to modify the adverse effects of TCDD in a female offspring. Pregnant female Wistar rats were allocated into four groups: TCDD, TCDD + Res, Res, and control. TCDD (1 μg/kg) was orally administered as a single dose on gestational day (GD) 15, and Res was orally administered during GD10-21 and lactation at a dose of 20 mg/kg/day. Female offsprings were euthanized on a specific postnatal day (PND) for hormonal analysis (PND 22, 48-

Maternal Exposure to Bisphenol-A During Pregnancy Increases Pancreatic β-Cell Growth During Early Life in Male Mice Offspring.

Alterations during development of metabolic key organs such as the endocrine pancreas affect the phenotype later in life. There is evidence that in utero or perinatal exposure to bisphenol-A (BPA) leads to impaired glucose metabolism during adulthood. However, how BPA exposure during pregnancy affects pancreatic β-cell growth and function in offspring during early life has not been explored. We exposed pregnant mice to either vehicle (control) or BPA (10 and 100 μg/kg·d, BPA10 and BPA100) and examined offspring on postnatal days (P) P0, P21, P30, and P120. BPA10 and BPA100 mice presented lower

Prenatal exposure to maternal stress following bereavement and cardiovascular disease: A nationwide population-based and sibling-matched cohort study.

AIMS: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is among the leading determinants of mortality and morbidity, and causation may begin in the early intrauterine environment. Prenatal exposures to glucocorticoids or stress are potential risk factors of CVD later in life, but empirical evidence from large population studies is lacking. We explored the association between prenatal stress due to maternal bereavement following the death of a relative and CVD in the exposed offspring. METHODS AND RESULTS: This population-based study included 2,607,851 children born in Denmark (1970-2008). Of these participants,

Maternal exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics triggers ovarian injury in mice offspring: Ferroptosis mediated by the HIF-1α/HO-1 pathway.

The escalating environmental contamination by nanoplastics (NPs) poses potential risks to reproductive health, yet the intergenerational effects of maternal NPs exposure on offspring ovarian function remain poorly understood. In the current study, pregnant mice were orally administered polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) throughout gestation, resulting in impaired offspring growth and marked ovarian damage characterized by follicular structural disruption and steroidogenic dysfunction. Transcriptomic profiling of offspring ovaries revealed significant alterations in genes associated with follicl
