Indication for and technical refinements of submental intubation in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

INTRODUCTION: In maxillofacial injuries, a choice has often to be made between different ways of intubation when surgical access to both the nasal and the oral cavities is necessary. Submental intubation is an interesting alternative to tracheotomy, especially when short-term postoperative control of the airway is foreseeable, and as control of the dental occlusion is complete, and access to the nose and mouth is undisturbed. MATERIAL: This kind of intubation has been used in our department in 25 cases since 1997. All patients had fractures disturbing the dental occlusion plus either an assoc…

Are you overlooking fractures of the mandibular condyle?

Fractures of mandibular condyle may be overlooked because attention is often focused on readily apparent soft tissue injury such as lacerations and abrasions. Clinical and radiographic signs are often subtle, but the injuries caused by rapid deceleration and listed in Table 2 will serve to alert the pediatrician to the possibility of such fractures. All children in these circumstances should be carefully examined for dental occlusion and the preauricular area palpated to help formulate a clinical diagnosis. Additional evidence is gained from the finding of deviation or limitation of the jaw up

Advancing precision in bilateral sagittal split osteotomy: a pioneering perspective on minimizing inferior alveolar nerve injury through endoscopic visualization.

BACKGROUND: Minimal invasive surgical procedures are popularized in various surgical fields, the utilization of endoscopic assisted techniques continues to grow across in the field of Maxillofacial Surgery. Orthognathic surgery is a commonly employed procedure for skeletal deformities. Bilateral sagittal split osteotomy(BSSO) is a versatile, result oriented procedure and its utility are well documented. The main pitfall is injury to the neurovascular bundle. Although various methods and modified instrumentation are advocated to minimize the injury to IAN. PURPOSE: The primary objective is to

A Microenvironment-Adaptive Scaffold Rejuvenates Peripheral Nerve Regeneration During Aging Via Dual Modulation of Ferroptotic Stimuli in Schwann Cells.

Repairing peripheral nerve injury remains a clinical challenge due to its limited regenerative capacity and the situation is further compounded with age. In this study, we identified the dysregulated repair program of Schwann cells (SCs) as a key feature of the aging-dependent impairment of nerve regeneration, mediated by dual influence of ferroptosis. The ferroptosis-stressor-rich microenvironment inhibits SC function in regenerating nerves. Moreover, the persistent intracellular ferroptosis stressor accumulation could accentuate senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) expression in

The 50 Most-Cited Publications on Mandibular Condyle Fractures: A Bibliometric Study.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular condyle fractures represent 16.5 to 56% of mandibular injuries and remain controversial in management. This bibliometric analysis evaluates the top 50 most-cited studies to identify research trends and gaps. We systematically searched the Web of Science for mandibular condyle fracture studies, analyzing the top most-cited 50 articles by citation counts, authorship, institutions, journals, and keywords using the VOSviewer for bibliometric coupling. FINDINGS: Studies (citations: 42 to 243) peaked in the 1990s to 2000s, declining after 2015. Germany 22% and the USA 12% led

Endoscopically assisted removal of ectopic teeth in the floor of the orbit. Case report and latest literature review.

Ectopic sinonasal third molar is a rare condition characterized by the aberrant position of the third molar in the maxillar sinus. The etiology of the teeth in the maxillary sinus is commonly associated to trauma and iatrogenic dental procedures. We present the clinical case of a 33-year-old man who presents an ectopic tooth in the right maxillary sinus, located in the orbital floor, who requires endoscopic control through a maxillary approach when performing the extraction. The endoscopic technique is being increasingly used in the maxillofacial field. Thanks to the endoscopic control for com

Surgical Management of a Rare Case of Massive Compound Odontome Associated with Missing Primary Tooth.

Odontomes are considered to be the most common odontogenic tumours of the jaws. They are benign, mixed tumours arising from the remnants of … he only feeder of blood to the face and oral cavity can be ligated to control bleeding in extensive maxillofacial injuries and orofacial malignancies. Herewith, we report a massive odontome in a three and half-year-old child which was treated by surgical excision along with carotid control to prevent excess bleeding.

[Burns].

The therapy for burn injuries has established a definable management: percentage of the body surface area burned and thickness are important for the method of treatment (ambulant, on ward, intensive burn center). Open and close wound care with different bandages, in combination with primary surgery, has increased the probability of survival. A special problem is the aesthetics and function of the head and neck area. Hypertrophy and keloid scars may be disturbing, especially in children who have had a scald accident (41.2% of cases were children up to 5 years of age). The possibilities of corre

Impaired perception of moving objects after minor injuries to the eye and midface: the Pulfrich phenomenon.

Delayed conduction along one optic nerve can result in an incorrect appreciation of moving objects. The temporal mismatch between the two different pathways results in altered perception of the vector of a moving target and is known as 'the Pulfrich phenomenon'. This is a well-recognised handicap in patients with multiple sclerosis, but has not previously been reported as a consequence of injury. All 187 patients who presented during 1991 with reduced visual acuity as a result of midfacial injuries were examined with a pendulum. Six had the defect and five of these had symptoms. In each case t

High resolution CT with image reformation in maxillofacial pathology.

Twenty-four patients with maxillofacial pathology were examined with computed tomography (CT) using thin (1.5-5.0 mm) sections allowing computer reformation of images in multiple planes. Eight patients also had pluridirectional tomography. The patients included 14 with facial trauma, four with acute paranasal sinus infections, and six with suspected neoplasms. High resolution CT with reformations allowed thorough evaluation of facial trauma. Fracture sites were correctly identified, as were the relation of fragments to vital structures. The form of structural facial alteration was easily asses

[Surgical tactics in severe combined injuries of the face and other body regions].

The results of treatment in 67 patients with associated injuries of the face and other regions of the body are analysed. Sixteen of them died. Their poor state was conditioned not by facial injuries but by traumas of other organs and system of the organism. It is concluded that such patients should be treated not in stomatological but in special traumatological departments for polytraumas. Surgery is first to be performed in the region where the damage is most hazardous. But the first step is to prevent aspiration of blood from the oral cavity into the respiratory tract followed by the fixatio

Tetrahedral framework nucleic acids facilitate neurorestoration of facial nerves by activating the NGF/PI3K/AKT pathway.

The facial nerve is a crucial nerve in the maxillofacial region and is vulnerable to damage. As a consequence of the complications during nerve restoration, existing remedies have certain limitations, thus the treatment of facial nerve injury is always a perplexing task for people. Regulation of Schwann cells is always the breakpoint of neurorestoration since Schwann cells count a great deal in injured nerve repair. In this study, we presented proof that tetrahedral framework nucleic acids (tFNAs), a kind of nucleic acid nanomaterial, were capable of regulating the neurorestorative pathway NGF
