The lung is the second most common site of hydatid cysts after the liver. The authors analyse retrospectively the results of patients treated with pulmonary hydatid cysts in the past 18 years, considering video-thoracoscopy. Twenty eight patients were treated during this period in 31 cases. Hydatid disease affected only the lung in case of 22 patients, while in 6 cases it was present in the liver and lung simultaneously. OBJECTIVE: To verify the efficacy of abendazole emulsion, a new formulation of abendazole, in treatment of human cystic echinococcosis.
METHODS: 212 patients with liver cystic echinococcosis were treated orally with albendazole emulsion at a daily dose of 10 mg/kg or 12.5 mg/kg for 3 to 12 months or over one year. The therapeutic efficacy was mainly evaluated by image feature examined with B ultrasound examination, a short-term efficacy at the completion of treatment and a long-term efficacy followed-up for 1-4 years.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is caused by the metacestode stage of the fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis. The disease affects the human liver and occasionally other organs and is fatal if treatment is unsuccessful. Conversely, diagnosis and treatment of the disease have been significantly improved in recent years. Alveolar echinococcosis is by far the most dangerous human parasitosis in Central Europe. For the one part this is due to the fact that the parasite is localised in the liver, and for the second part it is due to the infiltrative growth of the larval cestode tissue. Five of 6 fecal extracts from small children with intestinal Ascaris lumbricoides infection were IgE-positive before antiparasitic treatment with mebendazole was given.
