Sensory-motor integration and brain lesions: Progress toward explaining domain-specific phenomena within domain-general working memory.

Reports of rare patients who seem to lack the ability to retain certain types of information across brief delays have long sustained the popular idea that newly-perceived verbal, visual, and spatial information is initially recorded in separate, specialized short-term memory buffers. However, evidence from these same cases includes puzzling details that question explanations based on isolated deficits to a specialized storage system. We highlight consistent findings from patients with deficient auditory short-term memory that warrant further investigation and may challenge the specialized stor

Changes in spatial memory and BDNF expression to concurrent dietary restriction and voluntary exercise.

Substantial data suggest that cognitive function can be influenced by many lifestyle activities associated with changes in energy metabolism such as exercise and diet. In the current study, we investigated the combined effects of voluntary exercise (access to running wheels) and dietary restriction (every other day fasting, EODF) on spatial memory formation and on the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus of Wistar male rats. Spatial learning and memory formation was assessed using the radial arm water maze (RAWM) paradigm, while BDNF protein was measured using

Acute effects of the ampakine farampator on memory and information processing in healthy elderly volunteers.

Ampakines act as positive allosteric modulators of AMPA-type glutamate receptors and facilitate hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP), a mechanism associated with memory storage and consolidation. The present study investigated the acute effects of farampator, 1-(benzofurazan-5-ylcarbonyl) piperidine, on memory and information processes in healthy elderly volunteers. A double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, cross-over study was performed in 16 healthy, elderly volunteers (eight male, eight female; mean age 66.1, SD 4.5 years). All subjects received farampator (500 mg) and placebo. Te

Mutation of neuron-specific chromatin remodeling subunit BAF53b: rescue of plasticity and memory by manipulating actin remodeling.

Recent human exome-sequencing studies have implicated polymorphic Brg1-associated factor (BAF) complexes (mammalian SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complexes) in several intellectual disabilities and cognitive disorders, including autism. However, it remains unclear how mutations in BAF complexes result in impaired cognitive function. Post-mitotic neurons express a neuron-specific assembly, nBAF, characterized by the neuron-specific subunit BAF53b. Subdomain 2 of BAF53b is essential for the differentiation of neuronal precursor cells into neurons. We generated transgenic mice lacking subdomain 2

The impact of memory training on abstinence among individuals with alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Chronic excessive alcohol consumption is associated with cognitive deficits. Patients with cognitive impairment, particularly memory deficits, may have difficulties in acquiring new semantic and procedural information which could affect the effectiveness of clinical treatments. Memory training (MT) as an adjunct to evidence-based treatments is a promising approach to improve memory, cognitive functions, and abstinence rates. The objective of the study was to determine whether MT could positively influence memory function and long-term abstinence in individuals with alcohol use diso

Cognitive effects of transcranial direct current stimulation combined with working memory training in fibromyalgia: a randomized clinical trial.

Cognitive dysfunction in fibromyalgia has been reported, especially memory. Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has been effective in enhancing this function. We tested the effects of eight sessions of tDCS and cognitive training on immediate and delayed memory, verbal fluency and working memory and its association with brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels. Forty females with fibromyalgia were randomized to receive eight sessions of active or sham tDCS. Anodal stimulation (2 mA) was applied over the DLPFC and online c

Low-dimensional signatures of neuronal activity associated with long-term operant conditioning in Aplysia.

Operant conditioning is a form of learning in which a behavior is reinforced by reward. Operant conditioning has multiple temporal domains, ranging from short-term, lasting a few minutes, to long-term, persisting for at least 24 h. The extent to which short- and long-term operant conditioning memories rely on shared or separate neural mechanisms is poorly understood. Voltage-sensitive dye (VSD) imaging has been used previously to record the activity of a large number of neurons simultaneously in the buccal ganglion to measure changes in neuronal activity during short-term operant conditioning.

Retrograde amnesia after electrical stimulation of the substantia nigra: mediation by the dopaminergic nigroneostriatal bundle.

Stimulation of the zona compacta of the substantia nigra (SNC) has been reported to impair the long-term retention of a passive avoidance step-down task. In the present experiments it was observed that previous ipsilateral lesions of the dopaminergic nigro-neostriatal bundle (NSB) with 6-hydroxydopamine blocked the stimulation-induced memory deficit. Unilateral or bilateral lesions of the dopaminergic NSB did not by themselves disrupt acquisition or retention of the passive avoidance task. In addition, the memory deficit observed after electrical stimulation of the caudate-putamen was not redu

Controlled neuropsychological investigation of patients with neurotic excoriations.

On the basis of preliminary empirical findings and the pertinent neuropsychological literature the following hypothese are put forward: (1) Because of a certain amount of abreaction (scratching), patients with neurotic excoriations will obtain higher scores in tests of verbal learning and long-term memory than "common' neurotics but probably lower scores in such tests than a group of "normal' subjects. (2) Visual long-term memory is relatively impaired both in patients with neurotic excoriations and in "common' neurotics compared to a "normal' group. (3) Performances IQ for both patient groups

Behavioral analysis of internal memory states using cooling-induced retrograde amnesia in Limax flavus.

Temporal evolution of internal memory states in a terrestrial mollusk, Limax flavus, was studied using cooling-induced retrograde amnesia. The slug was conditioned to avoid carrot odor by temporally correlated presentation of carrot juice and a bitter-taste stimulus of quinidine sulfate. We could induce retrograde amnesia by cooling of the conditioned slug immediately after the training trial. Thus, we studied the memory states in the slug using the retrograde amnesia according to strategies used in the studies of memory states in mammals or insects. In the early process of memory acquisition,

Multimodal preclinical study of long-term effects of prenatal ultrasound on the mouse central nervous system.

The development of the central nervous system is regulated by multiple spatio-temporally varying factors that are essential for neurons to form functional networks. Prenatal ultrasound (US) exposure may affect the dendritic arborization and spine density of CA1 neurons in the hippocampus—a key region for memory processing—but the mid- and long-term effects of this exposure are still not well understood. In this study, we used an animal model to examine how repeated prenatal US exposure impacts memory function. After treatments, we assessed the memory performance of both treated and control ani

Anticholinergic drug atropine diminishes newly formed fear memory in male rats.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition which is triggered shortly after experiencing traumatic events. PTSD is complicated by the fact that people with PTSD often develop additional disorders such as phobias, addiction, depression, panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Beta-adrenergic and cholinergic system both are involved in memory formation as well as in emotional response associated with memory. It is reported that the administration of beta-adrenergic and cholinergic antagonist results in the impairment in memory formation. Here, we examined the potential of bet

Neural dysfunction underlying working memory processing at different stages of the illness course in schizophrenia: a comparative meta-analysis.

Schizophrenia, as a chronic and persistent disorder, exhibits working memory deficits across various stages of the disorder, yet the neural mechanisms underlying these deficits remain elusive with inconsistent neuroimaging findings. We aimed to compare the brain functional changes of working memory in patients at different stages: clinical high risk, first-episode psychosis, and long-term schizophrenia, using meta-analyses of functional magnetic resonance imaging studies. Following a systematic literature search, 56 whole-brain task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging studies (15 for c

COG1410 Alleviated Chronic Sleep Deprivation-Induced Memory Loss by Regulating Microglial Phagocytosis and Inhibiting Hippocampal Inflammation.

It is widely recognized that sleep loss harms healthy adults. Microglia-mediated synaptic pruning is active during sleep and contributes to memory consolidation. Here, we established a mouse model of sleep deprivation (SD) using a modified multiple-platform method (MMPM). Using western blotting, immunofluorescence, and Golgi-Cox staining, we found that SD increased microglial capacity for phagocytizing mature synapses and decreased the number of mature synapses, which affected long-term memory consolidation but did not affect working memory after SD. Further, we discovered that pretreatment wi

The Effect of 2.45 GHz Electromagnetic Fields on Fear Memory Extinction in Male Rats.

Introduction: Fear memories are influenced by psychological and environmental variables. We evaluated the effect of 2.45 GHz microwave radiation on rats' fear learning and memory ability to determine the potential risks. The present study aimed to assess the impacts of corticosterone (CORT) levels on the consolidation and reconsolidation of fear conditioning memories. Methods: The rats were evaluated in contextual fear conditioning using foot shocks in both short-term (7 days) exposure and long-term (30 days) exposure. Young male Wistar rats were continually exposed to radio frequency electrom

The neuroimmune system and cognition.

The neuroimmune system, an extensive bidirectional communication system between neural cells and immune cells, utilizes evolutionarily conserved molecules, including cytokines, chemokines and trophic factors that participate as mediators in both directions. While the initial discovery of classic immune molecules in the brain was interpreted as neuroinflammation, a broad literature demonstrates their essential roles in cognition during homeostatic brain function. These mechanisms include neural correlates of learning and memory, such as strengthening of neuronal networks and the generation of n

Neuropsychological Performance in Autoimmune Limbic Encephalitis: Evidence from an Immunotherapy-Naïve Cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Autoimmune limbic encephalitis (ALE) is characterized by memory impairment, psychiatric symptoms, and epileptic seizures. Though, the neuropsychological profile of ALE is not yet well defined. However, there is some evidence that neuropsychological impairments might exceed those related to the limbic system and that different autoantibodies (AABs) are associated with distinguishable pattern of neuropsychological impairments. We provide a comprehensive presentation of neuropsychological performance of ALE in an immune therapy-naïve sample. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 69 imm

Autobiographical memory after electroconvulsive therapy: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the most effective treatment of major depression, but autobiographical memory loss may limit its use. Despite previous attempts to synthesise the literature, the nature of autobiographical memory loss after ECT is still debated. AIMS: To provide an overview of the effect of ECT on autobiographical memory in patients with depression and explore whether the effect is temporary or permanent. Furthermore, we wanted to analyse if ECT parameters or clinical information are associated with this effect. METHOD: PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO and Web of Scienc

Neural mechanisms of auditory discrimination of long-duration tonal patterns: a neural modeling and fMRI study.

Language perception comprises mechanisms of perception and discrimination of auditory stimuli. An important component of auditory perception and discrimination concerns auditory objects. Many interesting auditory objects in our environment are of relatively long duration; however, the temporal window of integration of auditory cortex neurons processing these objects is very limited. Thus, it is necessary to make active use of short-term memory in order to construct and temporarily store long-duration objects. We sought to understand the mechanisms by which the brain manipulates long-duration t
