[A case of basilar artery occlusion associated with one-and-a-half syndrome, paralytic pontine exotropia and WEBINO-syndrome].

We report a 79-year-old woman with basilar artery occlusion. She had a sudden onset of tetraplegia and disturbed consciousness, and within four days from the onset she showed a varied, fluctuating eye symptoms. On admission, she showed ocular bobbing, skew deviation with the right eye lower-positioned, upward gaze palsy, one-and-a-half syndrome, and paralytic pontine exotropia (PPE). On the third day after the onset, she showed wall-eyed bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia (WEBINO) syndrome, and on the fourth day, she showed one-and-a-half syndrome again. Her right-gaze palsy improved repea

Kernohan's notch in chronic subdural hematoma: findings on magnetic resonance imaging.

A 69-year-old man presented with mild left-sided hemiparesis of 2 years' duration. A computerized tomography scan revealed a left-sided chronic subdural hematoma and a midline shift to the right. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging obtained on admission to the hospital also disclosed a deformity of the right crus cerebri. After drainage and irrigation of the hematoma through a single burr hole, the left hemiparesis improved significantly. Magnetic resonance imaging performed 9 days after the operation revealed that the size of the subdural hematoma had diminished and the deformity of the crus cere

[Brainstem hemorrhage after surgical removal of arachnoid cyst of the Sylvian fissure: a case report].

The authors report a case of a hemorrhage of the brainstem after craniotomy for resection of a huge arachnoid cyst of the sylvian fissure on the left hemisphere. The previous simptomatology included clinical signs of increased intracranial pressure, and the computerized tomography showed midline shift. Some factors may contribute to brain hemorrhage post-operatively: cerebral edema, ipsilateral changes in the venous reflux and blood perfusion, although the physiopathology remains obscure. A more careful approach is suggested in such cases with intracranial hypertension.

The distribution of GABA-immunoreactive neurons in the brain of the silver eel (Anguilla anguilla L.).

The distribution of GABA-immunoreactivity was studied in the brain of the silver eel (Anguilla anguilla) by means of antibodies directed against GABA. Immunoreactive neuronal somata were distributed throughout the brain. Positive perikarya were detected in the internal cellular layer of the olfactory bulb, and in all divisions of the telencephalon, the highest density being observed along the midline. Numerous GABA-reactive cell bodies were found in the diencephalon, particularly in the preoptic and tuberal regions of the hypothalamus, and the dorsolateral, dorsomedial and ventromedial thalami

Astasia and gait failure with damage of the pontomesencephalic locomotor region.

Although there is evidence in experimental animals of the importance of the pedunculopontine area in locomotion, clinical lesion reports are lacking. An 83-year-old woman became unable to stand and to generate stepping movements after a hemorrhage at the pontomesencephalic junction involving the right pedunculopontine area. Her deficit resembled the gait failure present in some elderly individuals.

An immunohistochemical study of the telencephalon of the senegal bichir (Polypterus senegalus).

The telencephalon in ray-finned fish (actinopterygians) is everted, in contrast to the evaginated telencephalic hemispheres in all other vertebrates. In the more derived ray-finned fish, the teleosts, proliferation of neurons and their migration from the ependymal zone of the pallium renders comparisons between telencephalic cell groups of the teleosts and members of other vertebrate groups extremely difficult. The telencephalon of Polypterus (a primitive living ray-finned fish), although everted, is cytoarchitecturally much simpler than that of teleosts. We have thus applied immunohistochemic

An atlas of the brain of the electric fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus.

This atlas consists of a set of six macrophotographs illustrating the important external landmarks of the apteronotid brain, as well as 54 transverse levels through the brain stained with cresyl violet. There are 150 microns between levels and the scales have 1 mm divisions (100 microns small divisions). In general the neuroanatomy of this brain is similar to that of other teleosts except that all parts known to be concerned with electroreception are greatly hypertrophied (electrosensory lateral line lobe, nucleus praeminentialis, caudal lobe of the cerebellum, torus semicircularis dorsalis, o

Thalamic projections from a midbrain somatosensory area in a reptile, Caiman crocodilus.

Ascending projections to the thalamus from a midbrain somatosensory area were investigated in a reptile, Caiman crocodilus. Connections were determined utilizing horseradish peroxidase (HRP) neurohistochemistry in which tetramethylbenzidine was the chromogen. Anterograde experiments, in which HRP injections were placed into the midbrain, revealed bilateral projections to the medialis complex of the dorsal thalamus. These observations were confirmed by HRP injections into the medialis complex which retrogradely labeled neurons in the midbrain somatosensory area bilaterally. An ipsilateral predo

Neurological disease associated with degenerative axonopathy of neonatal Holstein-Friesian calves.

The clinical and pathological features of 19 neonatal Holstein-Friesian calves affected with moderate to severe neurological disease are presented. Most calves were recumbent from birth, and many developed variable neurological signs including hyperaesthesia or depression, limb extension, head tremor, nystagmus, apparent blindness, and opisthotonos when stimulated. Consistent lesions of moderate to severe, diffuse, axonal swelling and loss, with Wallerian-type degeneration and myelin depletion in the spinal cord and brainstem, and occasionally in the midbrain and peripheral nerve roots, were o

Hypertrophy of the inferior olivary nucleus. A clinico-pathological observation.

The clinico-pathological findings in a 61-year-old man, who suffered from branchial and skeletal myoclonus, appearing six months after a brainstem infarction are reported. Of all the drugs which are usually thought to be effective in the treatment of myoclonus, only valproic acid brought some relief. The necropsy revealed bilateral hypertrophy of the olives, together with bilateral pontine tegmental and rubral infarctions, without involvement of the olivary pathway.

Pupil-sparing oculomotor palsy from midbrain hemorrhage.

Pupil-sparing oculomotor nerve palsy generally results from extraaxial lesions, but it has also been seen with intraaxial infarcts and tumors. This report of a midbrain hemorrhage in a 64-year-old man supports the idea of selective interference with widely separated oculomotor nerve fascicles as the mechanism for intraaxial pupil-sparing oculomotor nerve palsies.

[Partial oculomotor nerve palsy due to midbrain lesion--case report and discussion on its characteristics].

UNLABELLED: A case of partial oculomotor palsy due to midbrain infarction is reported. CASE PRESENTATION: Fifty-one-year old man noted a sudden onset of double vision. He transiently presented right hemiparesis, right hemihyposthenia and cerebellar ataxia. The main symptom was the left oculomotor palsy selectively involving extraocular muscles (levator and pupil sparing), lasting for more than 6 months. The CT scan showed localized and well demarcated low-density areas at the left tegmentum of midbrain and left anteromedial thalamus, diagnosed as lacunar infarction due to occlusion of paramed

The control of potassium concentration in the cerebrospinal fluid and brain interstitial fluid of developing rats.

1. In situ measurements of plasma, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain interstitial fluid (ISF) K+ concentrations have been made in anaesthetized rats aged between 19 days gestation and 30 days after birth using K+-selective micro-electrodes. 2. Under control conditions, plasma, CSF and ISF [K+] did not vary significantly with age, the over-all mean concentrations being 3.8, 3.1 and 3.2 mM respectively. The CSF and ISF [K+] were significantly lower than plasma [K+] at all ages. 3. It is concluded that young rats, from the age of 19 days gestation, can normally maintain plasma-to-CSF and plasma

Distribution of serotonin in the brain stem and spinal cord of the lizard Varanus exanthematicus: an immunohistochemical study.

The distribution of serotonin-containing nerve cell bodies, fibers and terminals in the lizard Varanus exanthematicus was studied with the indirect immunofluorescence technique, using antibodies to serotonin. Most of the serotonin-containing cell bodies were found in the midline, in both of the raphe nuclei, i.e. the nuclei raphes superior and inferior. A considerable number of more laterally shifted serotonergic neurons was found particularly at three levels of the brain stem, viz. in the caudal mesencephalic tegmentum, at the isthmic level, and over a long distance in the medulla oblongata.

Evidence for coexistence of dopamine and CCK in meso-limbic neurones.

Vanderhaeghen et al. reported the occurrence of gastrin-like immunoreactivity in the mammalian brain. Subsequent studies have revealed that this immunoreactivity corresponded mainly to the COOH-terminal octapeptide of cholecystokinin (CCK-8), which has a COOH-terminal pentapeptide identical to gastrin. Also, two peptides resembling the NH- and the COOH-terminal tetrapeptide fragments of CCK-8 are present in the central nervous system (CNS). Using COOH-terminal-specific antisera raised to gastrin and/or CCK, the distribution of CCK neurones has been described with immunohistochemical techniques

Abducens internuclear neurons and their role in conjugate horizontal gaze.

Experimental evidence suggests that brain stem lesions producing paralysis of lateral gaze and dissociation of conjugate horizontal eye movements have certain common features. Both of these disturbances involve abducens internuclear neurons (Abd IN) or their projections. Attempts were made to determine the course and terminal distribution of Abd IN in the monkey by autoradiographic techniques. Tritiated amino acids injected in the abducens nucleus (Abd N) labeled: (1) root fibers ipsilaterally, and (2) fibers that ascended in medial parts of the contralateral medial longitudinal fasciculus (ML
