Delayed-type Hypersensitivity to Metals in Newly Diagnosed Patients with Nonischemic Dilated Cardiomyopathy.

The causes of nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy are classified as genetic or nongenetic, but environmental factors such as metal pollutants … for lymphocyte transformation testing (MELISA®) to assess possible hypersensitivity to seven common metals. Specific exposure to metals was based on interview data. Results showed that exposure to cadmium and lead (p = 0.0002), aluminum (p = 0.0006), nickel (p = 0.0012), and chromium (p = 0.0065) was more often reported by patients than controls. The pat …

Leachability of metals from waste incineration residues by iron- and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria.

Hazardous waste disposal via incineration generates a substantial amount of ashes and slags which pose an environmental risk due to their toxicity. Currently, these residues are deposited in landfills with loss of potentially recyclable raw material. In this study, the use of acidophilic bioleaching bacteria (Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans, and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans) as an environmentally friendly, efficient strategy for the recovery of valuable metals from incineration residues was investigated. Zinc, Cobalt, Copper, and Manganese from three different inci…

Cysteine-modified silica resin in DGT samplers for mercury and trace metals assessment.

Diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) is an in situ passive sampling technique to assess labile trace metal concentrations in different environmental matrix. The technique is consisting of a diffusive domain backed up by a resin gel that binds free metals and metal complexes that dissociate in the diffusive domain. This technique requires specific resin for special metals, for example mercury (Hg), since the classic resin (Chelex-100) gel is not applicable for Hg measurement. A simultaneous determination of Hg with other metals by the DGT was not yet reported. Two biomolecule-based resins we…

Association between urinary metals levels and metabolic phenotypes in overweight and obese individuals.

Epidemiologic studies suggest that circulating metals from the natural environment are linked with cardiometabolic health. However, few studies examined the relationship between multiple metals exposure and metabolic phenotypes, especially in obese individuals. We conducted a cross-sectional study to explore the association between 23 urinary metals and metabolic phenotypes in 1392 overweight and obese individuals (592 males, 800 females, mean age 43.1 ± 9.8 years). Participants were classified as metabolically unhealthy if they had ≥2 of the following metabolic abnormalities: elevated blood p…

Indium and iridium: Two rare metals with a high rate of contact sensitization.

BACKGROUND: Humans are exposed to a variety of metals on a daily basis, and nickel is the most frequent contact allergen. Little is known about the frequency of sensitization to indium and iridium. OBJECTIVES: Study the prevalence of indium and iridium sensitization and evaluate the optimal patch test conditions. METHODS: A total of 364 patients were patch tested at the allergy unit of the University Hospital of Basel. Pure metals, metal chlorides, and metal sulfates were applied in petrolatum or water in Inert Quadrate (IQ) test chambers for 2 days and read twice at day (D) 2, and between D…

Long-term exposure to atmospheric metals assessed by mosses and mortality in France.

BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure to air pollution affects health, but little is known about exposure to atmospheric metals. Estimating exposure to atmospheric metals across large spatial areas remains challenging. Metal concentrations in mosses could constitute a useful proxy. Here, we linked moss biomonitoring and epidemiological data to investigate the associations between long-term exposure to metals and mortality. METHODS: We modelled and mapped 13 atmospheric metals from a 20-year national moss biomonitoring program to derive exposure estimates across France. In the population-based Gazel …

Effect of particulate matter-bound metals exposure on prothrombotic biomarkers: A systematic review.

Environmental pollution is an important modifiable determinant for preventing cardiovascular diseases. Acute exposure to air pollution is linked to severe adverse cardiovascular events, including venous thromboembolism risk. The adverse health effects seem to arise from blood-borne metals and transition metal components from exposure to particulate matter that, when breathed, passes through the lungs into the heart and the blood stream. Pollution affects health via mechanisms including oxidative stress and inflammation, and metals may have a detrimental effect on both the blood cells, particul…

Synchrotron-Based Phase Mapping in Corroded Metals: Insights from Early Copper-Base Artifacts.

The detailed description of corrosion processes in ancient and historical metal artifacts currently relies on the in-depth study of prepared cross sections. The in-plane elemental and phase distributions can be established from a combination of light and electron microscopy characterization. Here, we show that high-resolution virtual sectioning through synchrotron X-ray microcomputed tomography allows a precise noninvasive 3D description of the distribution of both internal and external mineral phases in whole objects. Change of the levels of trace elements and heavy metals in threatened abortion.

BACKROUND: This study aimed to investigate the impact of changes in the serum levels of trace elements and heavy metals in threatened abortion, which is a common complication in early pregnancy. Earlier studies have shown that changes in the serum levels of some trace elements and increased serum concentrations of heavy metals are associated with spontaneous abortion; however, this relationship has not been fully clarified. METHODS: The patient group consisted of 45 pregnant women diagnosed with threatened abortion. There were 40 healthy nonpregnant women in the control group. Blood samples w…

Effects of chelating agents on heavy metals in Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) patients.

Heavy metals are released into the environment through both human and natural sources, may have a direct hepatic toxicity and are involved in chronic liver diseases. Modification in the regulation of heavy metals metabolism enhanced hepatitis c virus (HCV) replication which ultimately reduced outcomes of anti-viral therapy in chronic HCV patients. Chelation therapy with new drugs seems to eradicate HCV and may prevent liver complications. The present study was planned to explore the effects of MiADMSA (lipophilic chelating agent) for achieving maximum heavy metals elimination in hepatitis c vi…

Environmental toxic metals in placenta and their effects on preterm delivery-current opinion.

Preterm birth is a significant public reproductive health concern globally; Furthermore, preterm birth has long-lasting medical and pecuniary burdens on the society. Moreover, preterm birth is well-established as the underlying cause of low birth weight in infants as well as neonatal mortality. A growing body of literature suggests that the etiology of preterm delivery in women is elusive; however, countless environmental factors are considered responsible for preterm birth. Environmental contaminants that are toxic metals such as lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury are familiar confounding fa…

Toxicological Antagonism among Welding Fume Metals: Inactivation of Soluble Cr(VI) by Iron.

Epidemiological studies in chromate production have established hexavalent chromium as a potent lung carcinogen. Inhalation of chromium(VI) most often occurs in mixtures with other metals as among stainless steel welders, which is the largest occupational group with Cr(VI) exposure. Surprisingly, carcinogenicity of Cr(VI)-containing welding fumes is moderate and not consistently higher than that of Cr-free welding. Here, we investigated interactions between chromate and three other metal ions [Fe(III), Mn(II), Ni(II)] that are typically released from stainless steel welding particles. In human…

Bioavailability, mobility, and origination of metals in sediments from Anzali Wetland, Caspian Sea.

We investigated the bioavailability, mobility, and origin of heavy metals present in sediments from the Anzali Wetland. Chemical speciation of the metals was performed according to the Tessier method. Results indicated that Cd and As showed the highest level of bioavailability, whereas Cr showed the lowest level. Cr, Co, and V were shown to have a terrestrial origin. The metal As was mostly found in the reducible fraction (F3), whereas other metals were highest in the residual phase. The levels of Co present in the oxidizable fraction (F4); Pb and Cd present in the carbonate fraction (F2); and…

Biomimetic surface functionalization of clinically relevant metals used as orthopaedic and dental implants.

Titanium and its alloys or tantalum (Ta) are materials used in orthopaedic and dental implants due to their excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However, their bioactivity and osteoconductivity is low. With a view to improving the bioactivity of these materials we hypothesised that the surface of Ta and TiAl6V4 can be functionalised with biomimetic, amorphous nano-sized calcium phosphate (CaP) apatite-like deposits, instead of creating uniform coatings, which can lead to flaking, delamination and poor adherence. We used Ta and TiAl6V4 metal discs with smooth and rough surfaces
