Due to its use of green and renewable energy and negligible bacterial resistance, photocatalytic bacterial inactivation is to be considered a promising sterilization process. Herein, we explore the relevant mechanisms of the photoinduced process on the active sites of semiconductors with an emphasis on the active sites of semiconductors, the photoexcited electron transfer, ROS-induced toxicity and interactions between semiconductors and bacteria. Pristine semiconductors such as metal oxides (TiO2 and ZnO) have been widely reported; however, they suffer some drawbacks such as narrow optical res

The development of robust materials for treating diseases through non-invasive photothermal therapy (PTT) has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Among various types of nanomaterials, inorganic nanomaterials with strong absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) window can be employed as high-efficiency photothermal agents to treat cancer and bacterial infections. In addition, inorganic nanomaterials can be easily combined with other drugs or chemical reagents to construct multifunctional nanomaterials to cascade stimulation responses, enhance therapeutic effects, and perform precise me

Soft-tissue sarcomas (STSs) are a heterogeneous group of tumors, which accounts for 1-2% of adult cancers worldwide. Despite quite a few reports on traumatic events followed by STS formation, the link between the two events remains a point of controversy. In this paper, we present the case of a young patient who had a rhabdomyosarcoma in the lower extremity, which had developed in the same location where the patient was wounded by a gunshot 9 years earlier. X-ray and CT scans clearly showed metal fragments in the area of sarcoma formation. The patient underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy treatme

Photocatalytic production of hydrogen by water splitting is a promising pathway for the conversion of solar energy into chemical energy. However, the photocatalytic conversion efficiency is often limited by the sluggish transfer of the photogenerated charge carriers, charge recombination, and subsequent slow catalytic reactions. Herein, we report a highly active noble-metal-free photocatalytic system for hydrogen production in water. The system contains a water-soluble nickel complex as a molecular cocatalyst and zinc sulfide on 1D cadmium sulfide as the heterojunction photocatalyst. The compl

Late failure of total knee arthroplasties usually results from ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene wear or implant loosening. Early failure from osteolysis is uncommon. However, we treated a patient with a failed total knee arthroplasty from osteolysis that developed 2 years postoperatively. The failure was associated with tibial component debonding from the cement mantle with abundant cement and metal debris. Although there was some third-body debris in the ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene insert surface, the insert wear was not extensive. Although abundant cement and metal debris

Heroin is a highly addictive drug that exerts its primary effects through activation of μ-opioid receptors. Its principal active metabolite, 6-monoacetylmorphine (6-MAM), significantly contributes to heroin's neurological effects and acute toxicity. Current pharmacotherapies for heroin use disorder, employing opioid receptor agonist or antagonist, are often limited by risks of dependence, tolerance, and/or adverse side effects. In this context, enzyme-based therapy emerges as a promising alternative by rapidly converting drugs into inactive or less harmful metabolites in the blood. As a macrom

Flying insects are potential mobile samplers of airborne particulate matter (PM). However, current knowledge on their susceptibility to PM is limited to pollinators. Insects' capacity for particle surface accumulation depends on the lifestyle, structure of the body integuments, and behavioral patterns. Here, we investigate how two species of flying omnivorous insects from the genus Vespula, possessing direct interactions with air, soil, plants, and herbivores, indicate industrial pollution by accumulating coarse (PM10) and fine (PM2.5) particles on their bodies. The internal accumulation of pa

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting offers a sustainable route for direct solar-to-hydrogen conversion, but its efficiency is often constrained by limited light harvesting and inefficient charge transport in photoanodes. For α-Fe2O3 and BiVO4, increasing film thickness improves light harvesting but lengthens carrier-transport pathways and promotes recombination, whereas wide-bandgap TiO2 is constrained primarily by limited spectral coverage. Stacked photoanodes provide a device-level strategy by arranging multiple individual photoanodes sequentially along the incident light direction an

The global rise of antimicrobial resistance has created an urgent need for alternative strategies that can overcome the limitations of conventional drug-resistance mechanisms. Light-assisted antimicrobial therapy, particularly photodynamic inactivation, offers spatial and temporal control while minimizing the likelihood of resistance. Since biomedical applications demand visible-light-responsive catalysts that enable deeper tissue penetration and minimize photodamage, designing systems that avoid reliance on UV excitation is essential. This work reports a supramolecular oxidase mimic "suprazym

Recently, organic persistent room-temperature phosphorescence (OPRTP), entailing triplet-state emission from purely organic units instead of luminescent heavy metal complexes, has emerged as a promising alternative for the development of emitting materials in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). For OPRTP-based devices to achieve acceptable performances, the low emission efficiency caused by weak spin-orbit coupling and high sensitivity to external environmental factors, such as temperature, moisture, and oxygen must be overcome. Herein, four-coordinate N-heterocyclic carbene Pt(II) complexe

Transition metal oxides are efficient bifunctional catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of nitrogen oxides (NOx) using CO. Nonetheless, their poor activity at lower temperatures constrains broader industrial application. Herein, we propose an optimized Fe2O3-based catalyst through strategic metal doping with Cu, Co, or Ce, which engenders a harmonious balance for the synergistic removal of CO and NOx. Among the developed catalysts, Co-doped Fe2O3, supported by rice husk ash, demonstrates superior low-temperature CO-SCR activity, achieving CO and NOx conversion ratios and N2 se

The presence of light hydrocarbons (HCs) in diesel exhaust, specifically C3H6, significantly affects the performance of the state-of-the-art Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite NH3-SCR catalysts. It also leads to the formation of highly toxic HCN, posing risks to the environment and human health. In this work, the highly toxic HCN formation is inhibited, and the C3H6 resistance of Cu-SSZ-13 is improved by secondary metal modification via doping with rare earth/transition metal elements. Upon introduction of C3H6, the activity of Cu-SSZ-13 significantly decreases at medium-high temperatures. This is primarily du

Thermochromic smart windows are optical devices that can regulate their optical properties actively in response to external temperature changes. Due to their simple structures and as they do not require other additional energy supply devices, they have great potential in building energy-saving. However, conventional thermochromic smart windows generally have problems with high response temperatures and low response rates. Owing to their great effect in photothermal conversion, photothermal materials are often used in smart windows to assist phase transition so that they can quickly achieve the

Fano resonance is a pervasive resonance phenomenon which can be applied to high sensitivity sensing, perfect absorption, electromagnetic-induced transparency, and slow-light photonic devices. In this paper, we propose a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide structure consisting of a D-shaped cavity and a bus waveguide with a silver-air-silver barrier. The Fano resonance can be achieved by the interaction between the D-shaped cavity and the bus waveguide. The finite element method is used to analyze the transmission characteristics and magnetic-field distributions of the structure in detail. Si

Low-dimensional metal halides have been researched as optoelectronic materials for the past two decades. Zero-dimensional halides of ns2 elements (Sn, Pb, Sb) have recently gained attention as highly efficient broadband light emitters. These compounds comprise discrete metal halide centers, isolated by bulky organic cations. Herein, we report isostructural halide complexes of Ge(II), Sn(II), and Pb(II) with a 1-butyl-1-methyl-piperidinium cation (Bmpip), featuring unusual disphenoidal coordination with a highly stereoactive lone pair. Previous fiber-shaped solar cells are based on polymeric materials or dye-sensitized wide band-gap oxides. Here, we show that efficient fiber solar cells can be made from semiconducting nanostructures (e.g. CdSe) with smaller band-gap as the light absorption material. We directly grow a vertical array of CdSe nanowires uniformly around a core metal wire and make the device by covering the top of nanowires with a carbon nanotube (CNT) film as the porous transparent electrode. The CdSe-CNT fiber solar cells show power conversion efficiencies of 1-2% under AM 1.5 illumination after the nanowires

Active control over optical nonlinearity in solid-state systems is central to unlocking exotic many-body phenomena and photonic devices. While exciton-polaritons in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offer a promising platform, their practical utility is impeded by fixed interactions and a trade-off between nonlinearity and oscillator strength. Here, we report electrically tunable dipolar polaritons in a dual-gated bilayer MoS2 microcavity, demonstrating in situ reshaping of the dispersion and modulation of the light-matter coupling strength via the quantum-confined Stark effect.
