BACKGROUND: Intraneural perineurioma (INP) is a rare, benign peripheral nerve sheath tumour that typically presents in adolescence or early adulthood as a slowly progressive, motor-predominant mononeuropathy or plexopathy. Although its clinicoradiological and histopathological features are well characterised, the genetic basis remains incompletely defined.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 10 patients with histologically confirmed INP diagnosed between February 2015 and December 2024. Demographic and clinical data, MRI/MR neurography findings and histopathology (immunohistochemistry and el

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an established therapy for refractory neuropathic pain, yet its spinal-level gating and supraspinal modulatory actions have rarely been unified into a single framework. Adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive search and rigorous selection of animal studies that investigated both spinal and supraspinal circuitry involved in SCS-induced analgesia. Through this process, we identified and systematically reviewed seven rodent studies employing tonic, burst, or sub-perception SCS

OBJECTIVE: Common peroneal (fibular) neuropathy is the most common mononeuropathy of the lower extremity. Despite this, there are surprisingly few studies on the topic, and a knowledge gap remains in the literature. As one attempts to address this knowledge gap, a core outcome set (COS) is needed to guide the planning phases of future studies to allow synthesis and comparability of these studies. The objective of this study was to develop the COS-common peroneal neuropathy (CoPe) using a modified Delphi approach.
METHODS: A 5-stage approach was used to develop the COS-CoPe: 1) stage 1, consor

OBJECTIVE: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common compressive focal mononeuropathy, and the increased incidence in postmenopausal and pregnant women suggests its association with oestrogen. The objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and the occurrence of CTS.
DESIGN: Population-based case-control study.
SETTING: Nationwide health insurance programme operated by the government with a near 100% coverage rate.
PARTICIPANTS: We identified women ≥45 years old in the Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan, which contains da

Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is caused by alterations in the immune system resulting in platelet destruction. It often manifests clinically with bleeding or on routine lab work revealing thrombocytopenia in asymptomatic individuals. Neurologic manifestations of this condition are sparsely documented in the literature. Among the symptoms reported were case reports of ischemic strokes, transient ischemic attacks, mononeuropathy multiplex, and polyneuropathy as neurological complications from immune thrombocytopenic purpura. Isolated cranial nerve palsies are uncommon. The following case

BACKGROUND: Peroneal nerve entrapment is the most common peripheral mononeuropathy of the lower limbs. Foot drop, a common presentation, leads to an impaired eversion and dorsiflexion of the foot. An intriguing observation is the occurrence of foot drop secondary to weight loss.
METHODS: A retrospective study of patients surgically treated for peroneal nerve entrapment was performed between January 1, 1995 and December 31, 2016, at the Department of Neurosurgery, Genk, Belgium. Out of a total of 421 patients, 200 patients with foot drop secondary to weight loss were included. For each subject

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common mononeuropathy in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The association between chronic inflammation and CTS in hemodialysis (HD) patients has rarely been investigated. HD patients with a high normalized protein catabolic rate (nPCR) and low serum albumin level likely have adequate nutrition and inflammation. In this study, we assume that a low serum albumin level and high nPCR is associated with CTS in HD patients. We recruited 866 maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients and divided them into 4 groups according to their nPCR and serum al

Peripheral neuropathies are well-known complications of primary systemic vasculitides. In rare cases, peripheral neuropathies are among the first symptoms of these diseases. In this prospective study, 89 consecutive adult patients with newly diagnosed primary systemic vasculitis were screened, of whom 22 patients (25 %, 12 men, ten women, mean age, 59 years, range, 26-82 years) suffered from peripheral neuropathy due to systemic vasculitis at initial presentation. Peripheral neuropathy was most frequent in newly diagnosed patients with eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Churg-Strau

Renal transplantation is method of choice for treatment of patients with end-stage renal disease without contraindications for immunosuppressive therapy. Neurological complications occur frequently in renal transplant recipients. They may be the consequence of immunosuppressive treatment, but more often evolve as the consequence of previous disturbances which developed during the state of uraemia and treatment with dialysis. The most pronounced neurotoxic effect has calcineurin inhibitors tacrolimus and cyclosporine. The spectrum of neurological disturbances caused by calcineurin inhibitors ra

A 75-year-old man, previously diagnosed as having chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, suddenly developed left foot drop, followed by progressive motor weakness and sensory disturbance in all of the extremities. Because of an elevated level of the rheumatoid factor (RF), he had been treated with antirheumatic drugs three years before the onset of his neurological symptoms. Within two months, he became unable to walk any more, and was transferred to our hospital. Neurologic examination showed asymmetrical severe muscular weakness and atrophy of all the limbs, and a sensory deficit under t

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a multifunctional cytokine whose actions include modulation of proliferation, differentiation, and maturation of hemapoietic progenitors and other cell lineages; growth regulation of certain carcinoma cell lines; and control of cellular metabolic activities. Initially described in terms of its activities in the immune system and inflammation, accumulating evidence supports an essential role of IL-6 in the development, differentiation, regeneration and degeneration of neurons in the peripheral and central nervous system. We have previously demonstrated that immunoreactiv

In August 1991, the Institute of Medicine released a report entitled Adverse Effects of Pertussis and Rubella Vaccines, which examined 18 adverse events in relation to diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) vaccine and four adverse events in relation to the currently used rubella vaccine strain, RA 27/3. The committee spent 20 months reviewing a wide range of information sources, including case series and individual case reports, both published and unpublished, epidemiologic studies, studies in animals, and other laboratory studies. The committee found that the evidence indicates a causal relation

Nerve conduction studies provide the most sensitive and accurate account of peripheral neuropathophysiology. Though nerve conduction studies should never be performed in lieu of a clinical examination, the electrodiagnostic evaluation provides an optimal adjuvant to the clinical examination. Indications for nerve conduction studies are many, including evaluation of the nature of the pathophysiology, quantification of the severity of involvement, detection of the level of a neurologic deficit, and determining prognosis. Among other indications, limitations of the study should also be acknowledg

Neurological manifestations like mononeuritis multiplex are seen commonly in patients with Churg Strauss syndrome. Cranial nerve involvement and central nervous system involvement are also reported, although infrequently. Phrenic nerve involvement has not been reported so far. We report a patient with Churg Strauss syndrome who presented with mononeuritis multiplex and developed left-sided phrenic nerve palsy subsequently.
