When is somebody just some body? Ethics as first philosophy and the brain death debate.

I, along with others, have been critical of the social construction of brain death and the various social factors that led to redefining death from cardiopulmonary failure to irreversible loss of brain functioning, or brain death. Yet this does not mean that brain death is not the best threshold to permit organ harvesting-or, as people today prefer to call it, organ procurement. Here I defend whole-brain death as a morally legitimate line that, once crossed, is grounds for families to give permission for organ donation. I do so in five moves. First, I make the case that whole-brain death is a

Are Obese Children Abused Children?

In 2010, a South Carolina mother was taken to court when her fourteen-year-old son reached 555 pounds. An article on the story reported, "His mother, Jerri Gray, lost custody of her son and is being charged with criminal neglect. Gray is facing 15 years on two felony counts, the first U.S. felony case involving childhood obesity." If the caretakers of obese children are negligent, then they are also morally and legally blameworthy. I want to suggest, however, that important ethical differences exist between negligent or abusive caretakers and the caretakers of obese children and that these dif

Tragic Competence: A Third Structure in Physician Distress.

RATIONALE: Physician distress is conventionally described as burnout and addressed through resilience, or as moral injury and addressed through systemic reform. Both frameworks assume that distress follows from a known right action being blocked or a value betrayed. Some of the distress of clinical work has a third structure: clinicians are sometimes troubled not because a value has been lost but because several legitimate goods make claims that cannot all be met, so a defensible choice may still leave a genuine good unrealised. Neither existing framework names this structure, and medicine has

Does mindfulness help employees express ethical voice? a moderated mediation model of mindfulness and ethical voice.

Following a series of major ethical scandals in various organizations, researchers have increasingly sought to understand the role of ethical voice in the workplace. Existing ethical voice research centres on leadership-focused models and overlooks the individual psychological mechanisms connecting traits to ethical voice, creating a key gap in understanding the micro-foundations of such behaviour. The results of a longitudinal field study featuring 453 participants from one Chinese firm were used to investigate the model hypothesized in this research. The results reveal that employee mindfuln

"Slow" Trauma to Families with the Demise of Family-Centered Care and Trauma-Informed Care.

AbstractIn the article "Slow Trauma: Reframing Concepts of Moral Injury in Trauma-Informed Ethics Consultation," Charles Love argues that family members are at significant risk for "moral injury and trauma" through the experience of the hospitalization of their loved ones. But Love adds an important insight about the type of moral injuries experienced by family members, distinguishing between what psychologists refer to as "fast" trauma and "slow" trauma. Love's detailed exposition of slow trauma is an important refinement of my article "TIEC, Trauma Capacity, and the Moral Priority of Surroga

Digital Misinformation and the Crisis of Conscience Formation.

The proliferation of digital media has transformed the conditions under which Catholics form conscience, particularly regarding public health. This article examines vaccine refusal motivated by misinformation as a distinct moral problem in Catholic bioethics. We argue that social media algorithms, political rhetoric, and the cultivation of informal "alternative" authorities create an environment in which the Thomistic duty to pursue truth is systematically obstructed, expanding rather than diminishing moral responsibility. Drawing on the Catechism, Veritatis Splendor, the Congregation for the

Sterilizations reconsidered?

Cowdin and Tuohey argue for a rethinking of Catholic bioethical principles and the Church's moral authority. Citing the Second Vatican Council for support, they argue that if the Church were to respect the proper autonomy of medicine, it would allow sterilizations. In this essay I argue against Cowdin and Tuohey's understanding that the Church has derived its moral laws independent of consultation with medicine and that it treats medicine simply as a source of technical expertise. I also argue that they misunderstand that nature of autonomy as well as the Church's position regarding the type o

[The transformation of the body and its global implications for COVID care: an inside perspective on healthcare].

This paper is the result of an investigation into the role played by the researcher within ethnographic methodology in clinical settings. Accordingly, it focuses on reflecting on the following question: what role does the researcher's voice play in describing bodily transformations in clinical spaces involving people with severe COVID? Drawing on Kleinman's notion of moral worlds, Turner's notion of liminality, Levinas's ethics of otherness, and Butler's theory of power, the study seeks to develop an in-depth interpretation of the moral, socio-ethical and political dimensions involved. Examining FGC Survivor and FGC Impacted Community Involvement Behind FGM/C Legislation in the United States: A Response to Bader's "From the War on Terror to the Moral Crusade Against Female Genital Mutilation: Anti-Muslim Racism and Femonationalism in the United States".

As an American-born woman who grew up as a South Asian Dawoodi Bohra Muslim, I have been aware of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) my entire life. So I immediately agreed to give commentary on "From the War on Terror to the Moral Crusade Against Female Genital Mutilation: Anti-Muslim Racism and Femonationalisim in the United States" by Dina Bader. While I do not necessarily disagree with Bader's observations, I provide additional context to better understand the history of our current FGM/C laws in this country and the influence survivors and advocates' have had in shaping them.

A sex police for adults with "mental retardation"? Comment on Spiecker and Steutel.

This article is a rebuttal of the claim by Spiecker and Steutel that sex between people with mild and moderate "mental retardation" is morally permissable only with the substitutive consent of caregivers. After a review of historical, empirical and practical considerations, an ethical analysis is undertaken which concludes that Spiecker and Steutel's arguments are deeply flawed and their proposed policy morally objectionable.

The eco-ethical contribution of Menico Torchio - a forgotten pioneer of European Bioethics.

BACKGROUND: In 1926, Fritz Jahr described bio-ethics (German: bio-ethik) as "the assumption of moral obligations not only towards humans, but towards all forms of life." Jahr summarized his philosophy by declaring, "Respect every living being on principle as an end in itself and treat it, if possible, as such!." Bioethics was thus originally an ethical system concerned with the "problems of interference with other living beings… and generally everything related to the balance of the ecosystem" according to the 1978 Encyclopedia of Bioethics. This definition was predicated on the work of Fritz

Seeking quality care for patients with pressure ulcers.

Improving quality care for patients with pressure ulcers resulted in a two-year intensive effort to educate staff, keep morale high, standardize care plans by stage of ulcer, and participate in a comparison study of two support surfaces (Thera-Pulse, Kinetic Concepts and Geo-Matt, SpanAmerica). When all pressure ulcers were considered, the analysis of covariance revealed no statistically significant difference in the healing of pressure ulcers with respect to type of support surface used (F[1, 78] = 0.35, p > .05). For patients with stage III and IV pressure ulcers, the proportion of patients …

Homosexuals and AIDS: a new approach to the illness.

AIDS, historically connected with homosexuals, has provoked a number of social, psychological, and moral reactions within the homosexual community itself as well as elsewhere. Among questions raised, there are all those concerning the meaning and place of human sexuality. Between strict moral condemnation and publicity for "Safer Sex," there is room for a personal ethic, reflection, and a more responsible behavior.

The Case Against Legalizing Medically Assisted Suicide or Voluntary Active Euthanasia in Islamic Regions.

This essay presents arguments against legalizing medically assisted suicide (MAS) or voluntary active euthanasia (VAE) in Islamic regions. MAS and VAE should be determined by particular regions based on their respective mainstream moral cultures. Taking the Islamic regions of Bangladesh as examples, the essay argues that MAS or VAE should not be legalized in such regions because it would contradict the Islamic classical moral convictions, authentic interpretations, and relevant bioethical codes that prioritize saving human lives and providing quality palliative care rather than MAS or VAE for

Conflicting minds: Immanuel Kant, Johann Daniel Metzger, and the debate about forensic psychiatry.

This article explores the dispute between the philosopher Immanuel Kant and the physician Johann Daniel Metzger over the moral autonomy of individuals with mental illness. Situating the debate within the broader context of the evolving philosophical and medical professions in eighteenth-century Germany, the article examines how a professional conflict emerged over who - the physician or the philosopher - should serve as the legal authority in cases where moral responsibility was in question. The analysis shows that this was not merely a theoretical issue for Kant, but a practical one, brought

Deliberation at the hub of medical education: beyond virtue ethics and codes of practice.

Although both codes of practice and virtue ethics are integral to the ethos and history of "medical professionalism", the two trends appear mutually incompatible. Hence, in the first part of the paper we explore and explicate this apparent conflict and seek a direction for medical education. The theoretical and empirical literature indicates that moral deliberation may transcend the incompatibilities between the formal and the virtuous, may enhance moral and other aspects of personal sensitivity, may help design and improve other parts of the curricula, and may foster self-awareness and clarif

Risk and panic in late modernity: implications of the converging sites of social anxiety.

Comparing moral panic with the potential catastrophes of the risk society, Sheldon Ungar contends that new sites of social anxiety emerging around nuclear, medical, environmental and chemical threats have thrown into relief many of the questions motivating moral panic research agendas. He argues that shifting sites of social anxiety necessitate a rethinking of theoretical, methodological and conceptual issues related to processes of social control, claims making and general perceptions of public safety. This paper charts an alternative trajectory, asserting that analytic priority rests not wit

Sociocognitive self-regulatory mechanisms governing transgressive behavior.

This longitudinal research examined a structural model of the self-regulatory mechanisms governing transgressive conduct. Perceived academic and self-regulatory efficacy concurrently and longitudinally deterred transgressiveness both directly and by fostering prosocialness and adherence to moral self-sanctions for harmful conduct. The impact of perceived social self-efficacy was mediated through prosocialness. Moral disengagement and prosocialness affected transgressiveness through the mediating influence of irascible affectivity and hostile rumination. Ruminative affectivity, in turn, both co

Tracing the soul: medical decisions at the margins of life.

Most religious traditions hold that what makes one a person is the possession of a soul and that this gives one moral status. This status in turn gives persons interests and rights that delimit the set of actions that are permitted to be done to them. In this paper, I identify the soul with the capacity for consciousness and mental life and examine the ethical aspects of medical decision-making at the beginning and end of life in cases of patients who either never have had or have lost this capacity. I argue that, although these patients may lack moral status, they nonetheless have moral value

Rehabilitation of ocular defect: A modified technique to produce corneal prominence.

Esthetics is a vital social concern. The loss of any part of the body can be an extremely discouraging occasion in a person's life. Loss of an eye because of tumors, congenital abnormalities, and trauma is one such troublesome situation. Eye prosthesis boosts the morale and makes the life socially acceptable. A correctly placed ocular prosthesis should reestablish the normal opening of the eye, support the eyelids, reestablish a degree of movement, and be satisfactorily held and esthetically satisfying. A customized acrylic eye fulfills all these requirements. In the current article, a new and…
