Portable experimental hut tents (PEHTs): a conceptual framework for improved malaria vector control decision-making with a review of fixed experimental hut sites in Africa.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) remain the primary vector control method across sub-Saharan Africa to prevent malaria transmission, with 2.2 billion pyrethroid (PY) ITNs distributed since 2004. Widespread PY resistance has contributed to stalling progress in recent years; however, new ITNs containing the pyrrole, chlorfenapyr, or the synergist piperonyl butoxide can provide improved efficacy. With more vector control options but limited resources, malaria programs face complex decisions influenced by local transmission intensity, mosquito species, and dynamic insecticide resistance

Control and mitigation of dengue and Zika virus transmission in a hospital in Recife, Brazil: a successful experience with an integrated control program against Aedes aegypti.

BACKGROUND: The presence of Aedes aegypti in healthcare facilities represents a significant epidemiological threat, as it is the primary vector of dengue (DENV), Zika (ZIKV), and chikungunya (CHIKV) viruses. In the absence of effective alternatives to chemical insecticides for eliminating adult mosquitoes, healthcare facilities may become focal points for arbovirus transmission, compromising the safety of patients and healthcare employees. Vector control remains the main approach for mitigating arbovirus transmission. This study investigated the impact of an effective integrated control progra

Does washing insecticide-treated nets 20 times for experimental hut evaluations provide a suitable proxy for their end-of-life performance under household conditions?

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are washed 20 times as part of experimental hut trials to simulate the loss of active ingredient (AI) occurring over their intended 3-year lifespan and estimate insecticidal durability. The ability of the 20-wash method to predict the end-of-life performance of ITNs has not been empirically validated. METHODS: We performed an experimental hut trial to compare the efficacy of new ITNs unwashed and washed 20 times to field-aged ITNs withdrawn from households 3 years post-distribution against a pyrethroid-resistant vector population in Covè, Benin. Assessing insecticide susceptibility status of Anopheles mosquitoes in Gondar zuria district, Northwest Ethiopia.

Insecticide-based vector control, which comprises the use of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS), is the key method of malaria control in Ethiopia. However, its effectiveness is threatened as malaria vectors become resistant to insecticides. Thus, the aim of this study was to monitor the insecticide susceptibility status of malaria vectors. WHO susceptibility tests were used to detect knock-down and mortality rate in the wild malaria vectors collected in Gondar zuria woreda, Northwest Ethiopia. The WHO diagnostic doses of 0.75% permethrin, 0.05% deltamethrin,

Durability study of Veeralin®, Olyset® Plus and MAGNet® insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh, India.

BACKGROUND: India plans to eliminate malaria by 2030, targeting zero local cases by 2027. However, malaria remains prevalent in endemic regions. As a means of addressing this issue, insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are crucial for prevention. In areas with pyrethroid-resistant vectors, studies indicate that ITNs containing pyrethroids and piperonyl butoxide (PBO) are more effective. However, their physical and chemical durability and bioefficacy in this setting require further evaluation. This study assessed the durability of two pyrethroid-PBO-treated nets and one pyrethroid-only-treated net t

Efficacy of a volatile pyrethroid spatial emanator (SE) in reducing Anopheles host-seeking in outdoor kitchens in Southern Zambia.

INTRODUCTION: In southern Zambia, malaria transmission is low, with outdoor biting Anopheles mosquitoes playing a significant role in malaria transmission. Locals cook in outdoor, open-walled kitchen shelters, exposing them to these outdoor biting vectors and malaria. Volatile pyrethroid spatial emanators (SE) operate through a mode of action which could provide local protection around these kitchens. In this study, SE devices containing the pyrethroid transfluthrin were deployed to local kitchens, where human landing collection (HLC) was utilized to determine differences in host-landing rates

The effect of next-generation, dual-active-ingredient, long-lasting insecticidal net deployment on insecticide resistance in malaria vectors in Benin: results of a 3-year, three-arm, cluster-randomised, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide resistance among malaria vector species now occurs in 84 malaria-endemic countries and territories worldwide. Novel vector-control interventions, including long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) that incorporate new active ingredients with distinct modes of action, are urgently needed to delay the evolution and spread of resistance and to alleviate reversals in malaria-control gains. We aimed to assess the longitudinal effect of two dual-active-ingredient LLINs on insecticide resistance during a cluster-randomised, controlled trial in Benin. METHODS: This 3-year, three

Insecticide resistance and its intensity in urban Anopheles arabiensis in Kisumu City, Western Kenya: Implications for malaria control in urban areas.

BACKGROUND: The rise of insecticide resistance poses a growing challenge to the effectiveness of vector control tools, particularly in rural areas. However, the urban setting has received comparatively less focus despite its significance in attracting rural to urban migration. Unplanned urbanization, often overlooked, exacerbates insecticide resistance as Anopheles mosquitoes adapt to the polluted environments of rapidly expanding cities. This study aimed to assess the insecticide susceptibility status of malaria vectors and identify potential underlying mechanisms across three distinct ecolog

Assessing radiation-induced enzyme activation in Aedes aegypti: Potential challenges for SIT-based vector management.

This study characterizes the Aedes aegypti population from Fernando de Noronha Island, Pernambuco, Brazil, prior to implementing the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). The main objective was to assess changes in glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzyme activity, previously linked to cypermethrin resistance in this population, in 2010. GST activity was measured in both male and female mosquitoes, masse produced in lab, after exposure to ionizing radiation. The populational evaluation after six years showed a complete susceptibility to cypermethrin, deltamethrin and lambda-cyhalothrin, although GST a

The effect of novel mosquito bite prevention tools on Anopheles minimus landing and key secondary endpoints: semi-field evaluations in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: The Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) aims to eliminate all human malaria by 2030 and is making substantial progress toward this goal, with malaria increasingly confined to forest foci. These transmission foci are predominantly inhabited by ethnic minorities, local populations, and rural mobile and migrant populations working in mining and agriculture. The recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) on malaria elimination states that small population groups which constitute a large proportion of the malaria transmission reservoir should benefit from targeted strategies to r

Indoor residual spraying practices against Triatoma infestans in the Bolivian Chaco: contributing factors to suboptimal insecticide delivery to treated households.

BACKGROUND: Indoor residual spraying (IRS) of insecticides is a key method to reduce vector transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi, causing Chagas disease in a large part of South America. However, the successes of IRS in the Gran Chaco region straddling Bolivia, Argentina, and Paraguay, have not equalled those in other Southern Cone countries. AIMS: This study evaluated routine IRS practices and insecticide quality control in a typical endemic community in the Bolivian Chaco. METHODS: Alpha-cypermethrin active ingredient (a.i.) captured onto filter papers fitted to sprayed wall surfaces, and in

High Temperature Cycles Result in Maternal Transmission and Dengue Infection Differences Between Wolbachia Strains in Aedes aegypti.

Environmental factors play a crucial role in the population dynamics of arthropod endosymbionts, and therefore in the deployment of Wolbachia symbionts for the control of dengue arboviruses. The potential of Wolbachia to invade, persist, and block virus transmission depends in part on its intracellular density. Several recent studies have highlighted the importance of larval rearing temperature in modulating Wolbachia densities in adults, suggesting that elevated temperatures can severely impact some strains, while having little effect on others. The effect of a replicated tropical heat cycle

Evaluating effectiveness of screening house eaves as a potential intervention for reducing indoor vector densities and malaria prevalence in Nyabondo, western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-proofing of houses using wire mesh screens is gaining greater recognition as a practical intervention for reducing exposure to malaria transmitting mosquitoes. Screening potentially protects all persons sleeping inside the house against transmission of mosquito-borne diseases indoors. The study assessed the effectiveness of house eaves screening in reducing indoor vector densities and malaria prevalence in Nyabondo, western Kenya. METHODS: 160 houses were selected for the study, with half of them randomly chosen for eaves screening with fibre-glass coated wire mesh (exper

Anopheles gambiae (s.l.) is found where few are looking: assessing mosquito diversity and density outside inhabited areas using diverse sampling methods.

BACKGROUND: One of the promising current approaches to curb malaria lies in genetic vector control, the implementation of which will require an improved understanding of the movement of genetic constructs among mosquito populations. To predict potential gene flow from one area to another, it is important to begin to understand mosquito dynamics outside of the commonly-sampled village areas, and thus how genes may move between villages. This study assessed the presence and relative abundance of mosquitoes in a 6-km corridor between two villages in western Burkina Faso. METHODS: The area surrou
