Relationship between motion sickness, migraine and menstruation in crew members of a "round the world" yacht race.

The similarities between the symptoms reported by patients with migraine and those experienced by severely motion sick individuals raises the question of whether the two conditions involve common mechanisms. In women, attacks of migraine may follow the menstrual cycle, and anecdote suggests this may also be true of motion sickness. The aim of this study was to determine whether there was a cyclical pattern in the occurrence of migraine/headache and motion sickness among crew members of a "round the world" yacht race. The participants were asked to complete pre- and postrace questionnaires that…

Differentiation of muscarinic cholinergic receptor subtypes in human cortex and pons: implications for anti-motion sickness therapy.

Radioligand binding studies were used to analyze muscarinic cholinergic receptor subtypes in human cortex and pons. Muscarinic cholinergic r … s targeted to this subpopulation of muscarinic cholinergic receptors may prove to be effective anti-motion sickness agents with less side effects than scopolamine.

Effects of vestibular habituation training on synaptic plasticity in the medial prefrontal cortex of mice with motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness (MS) is triggered by vestibular conflict, yet how vestibular habituation training (VHT) engages higher-order cortical circuits remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To test whether VHT modulates medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) activity and structural plasticity in a rotational MS model. METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice were assigned to control (CON), motion sickness (MS), or vestibular habituation training (VHT) groups. MS was induced by a single 4-g session (four 1-min bouts; total 4 min), whereas VHT mice received 14 daily sessions (30 × 1-min bouts/day; total 30 min/day). Beh…

Implication of substance P neuronal system in the amygdala as a possible mechanism for hypergravity-induced motion sickness.

We previously reported that motion sickness was prevented in rats with amygdala lesion and that provocative motion stimuli increased the number of Fos-positive neurons in the amygdala, suggesting that the amygdala is one of the neural substrates involved in the development of motion sickness. NK-1 receptors in the brain stem and amygdala are thought to play an important role in emesis and affective disorders, respectively. In the present study, to elucidate a role of substance P neuronal system and NK-1 receptors in the brain stem and amygdala in the development of motion sickness, we measured…

[Specific features of the motor function of the digestive organs in persons with different degree of resistance to motion sickness].

The effect of three exposures to Coriolis acceleration on the frequency and amplitude of fasting stomach contractions was investigated in 6 resistant and 16 susceptible to motion sickness test subjects. After tests all of them underwent gastroduodenoscopy and 4 subjects from each group were subjected to echography to measure gall bladder contractility in response to glucose-milk loads. After tests the motor activity of the stomach increased slightly in resistant subjects due to an increase of the amplitude and a slight decrease of biopotential frequency. During gastroscopy antral and pyloric s…

[Effect of dimephosphon on the blood circulation and oxygen tension in the brain of normal waking rabbits and in motion sickness].

By using methods of hydrogen clearance and polarography it was shown that rocking of conscious rabbits is followed by an increase of total cerebral blood flow, local blood flow and oxygen tension (pO2) in the frontal, occipital and temporal brain cortex during hypotension and a decrease of the heart rate. Dimephosphon causes a decrease of the cerebral blood flow both during the stationary position of animals and rocking, exerting a weak influence on pO2 in the cerebral cortex, arterial blood pressure and the heart work.

[Effect of motion sickness on the absorption of B group vitamins and ascorbic acid in the small intestine of dogs].

On the dogs with a Thiry-Pavlov fistula (an isolated loop of the small intestine) the effect of 30-min acceleration on the absorption of thiamine-bromide, riboflavine, pyridoxine-hydrochloride and ascorbic acid as well as on the gastric juice secretion was studied. It was demonstrated that back-to-forth linear acceleration increased vitamin B1 absorption, decreased vitamins B2 and B6 and ascorbic acid absorption, and altered secretion of gastric juice.

Motion sickness in stop-and-go passenger rides: influence of individual characteristics, contextual, behavioural, and physiological parameters.

Progress in road vehicle automation is tainted by an increased occurrence of passenger motion sickness. Yet, these advances drive the design of car cockpits towards user-centric approaches, such as monitoring passenger well-being. In this framework, the present study aimed to identify robust predictors of motion sickness severity based on data from two experimental studies reproducing a stop-and-go passenger ride. The data from 54 participants tested in a total of 106 identical sessions involving gaze restriction to a visuomotor activity were analysed. Individual characteristics, contextual, b…

Anticipatory vibrotactile cues about upcoming turns reduce motion sickness: A study with car passengers on public roads.

The introduction of automated driving brings improvements towards comfort and enables all passengers to use their time more efficiently. However, the more the occupant engages in tasks unrelated to driving, the risk of massive discomfort caused by motion sickness or more specifically carsickness, increases. The development of carsickness includes symptoms such as dizziness or nausea and depends, among other factors, on the occupants' ability to anticipate upcoming vehicle movements. The present study investigated whether anticipatory vibrotactile cues, focused exclusively on lateral maneuvers …

Correlation between residual dizziness after repositioning of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and motion sickness: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: During the onset of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), patients with motion sickness may experience more severe vestibular symptoms, which may affect the occurrence of residual dizziness (RD). OBJECTIVES: To study the correlation between RD after BPPV and motion sickness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: According to the history of motion sickness, the clinical characteristics of BPPV combined with motion sickness were analyzed. According to whether there was RD after successful repositioning, the patients were divided into RD group and non-RD group. The differences between the t…

Classification of Visually Induced Motion Sickness Based on Phase-Locked Value Functional Connectivity Matrix and CNN-LSTM.

To effectively detect motion sickness induced by virtual reality environments, we developed a classification model specifically designed for visually induced motion sickness, employing a phase-locked value (PLV) functional connectivity matrix and a CNN-LSTM architecture. This model addresses the shortcomings of traditional machine learning algorithms, particularly their limited capability in handling nonlinear data. We constructed PLV-based functional connectivity matrices and network topology maps across six different frequency bands using EEG data from 25 participants. Our analysis indicated…

Sex-disease dimorphism underpins enhanced motion sickness susceptibility in primary adrenal insufficiency: a cross-sectional observational study.

Environmental motion can induce physiological stress and trigger motion sickness. In these situations, lower-than-normal levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) have been linked with increased susceptibility to motion sickness in healthy individuals. However, whether patients with primary adrenal insufficiency, who typically have altered ACTH levels compared to the normal population, exhibit alterations in sickness susceptibility remains unknown. To address this, we recruited 78 patients with primary adrenal insufficiency and compared changes in the motion sickness susceptibility scores f…

EEG-based analysis of various sensory stimulation effects to reduce visually induced motion sickness in virtual reality.

The use of virtual reality (VR) is frequently accompanied by motion sickness, and approaches for preventing it are not yet well established. We explored the effects of synchronized presentations of sound and motion on visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) in order to reduce VIMS. A total of 25 participants bicycle riding for 5 min with or without sound and motion synchronization presented on a head-mounted display. As a result, the VIMS scores measured by the fast motion sickness scale and simulator sickness questionnaire were significantly lower in the participants who experienced the ridin…
