Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the adult urinary bladder: a rare case report of misclassification as inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor.

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) of the adult urinary bladder is a rare malignant tumour. Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour (IMT) of the bladder is a benign genitourinary tumour that may appear variable histologically but usually lacks unequivocal malignant traits. Techniques like flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry may be used to differentiate these two tumours. Our patient, a 46-year-old male, had rapidly recurring lower urinary tract symptoms after two transurethral resections of the prostate. He subsequently underwent a transvesical prostatectomy which showed IMT on histology. Howev

A Renal Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor Similar to Cystic Renal Cell Carcinoma: One Case Report.

We describe and analyze the clinical course and imaging findings of a case of a renal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) that is similar to cystic renal cell carcinoma. "Solitary cysts" on the left kidney were found during a health examination of a 60-year-old female. The patient also had hypertension. She had undergone surgeries twice for limb trauma fracture and had no definite record of hepatitis. There was no tenderness with percussion of the kidney area or edema in the lower extremity. The renal function results, including serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and blood urea, were

Paraneoplastic pemphigus associated with inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour of the mediastinum: A favourable response to treatment and review of the literature.

Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is an autoimmune blistering disorder that occurs in association with an underlying neoplasm. Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour (IMT) is a rare low-grade sarcoma of fibroblasts and myofibroblasts associated with inflammatory cells, most commonly occurring in the lung. In this study, a case of PNP associated with IMT of the mediastinum is reported. The patient had a favourable outcome following surgical resection and treatment with a systemic steroid, azathioprine, and i.v. immunoglobulin. The occurrence of PNP with sarcomas, specifically IMT, is noteworthy altho…

A large inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor involving both stomach and spleen: A case report and review of the literature.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare, benign neoplasm that most commonly occurs in pediatric patients; it has been described as a pseudosarcomatous proliferation of spindled myofibroblasts mixed with lymphoplasmacytic cells. IMT has been reported in a number of locations throughout the body; however, cases occurring in the gastrointestinal tract are rare and to date, no case involving both the stomach and spleen has been reported. The current study presents a case of an extremely large IMT invading both the stomach and spleen in a 50-year-old female, presenting with a three-month…

Apigenin inhibits TGF-β1 induced fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transition in human lung fibroblast populations.

BACKGROUND: Flavonoids are dietary plant compounds suspected to reduce the incidence of chronic diseases in several regions of the world. Du … igenin inhibits the TGF-β1-induced expansion of hyper-contractile, α-smooth muscle actin - positive myofibroblasts within populations of HBFs derived from asthmatic patients. They also indicate the possible interference of apigenin with bronchial wall remodeling during the asthmatic process in vivo.

Synchronous gastric inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour with gastrointestinal stromal tumour of the stomach and hepatic syringious haemangioma.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour of the stomach is a very rare lesion. A case of a gastric inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour associated with gastrointestinal stromal tumour of the stomach and hepatic syringious haemangioma is described. We report an 80-year-old male who had an exophytic mass in the area of the pylorus and the duodenum, where hepatic cysts were found in the magnetic resonance (MRI) scan on examination of hypochromic microcytic anaemia, and prolapsus and torsion of the bulb of the stomach found during gastroscopy. During surgical excision of the exophytic mass, a gastrointe

Abolishing myofibroblast arrhythmogeneicity by pharmacological ablation of α-smooth muscle actin containing stress fibers.

RATIONALE: Myofibroblasts typically appear in the myocardium after insults to the heart like mechanical overload and infarction. Apart from contributing to fibrotic remodeling, myofibroblasts induce arrhythmogenic slow conduction and ectopic activity in cardiomyocytes after establishment of heterocellular electrotonic coupling in vitro. So far, it is not known whether α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) containing stress fibers, the cytoskeletal components that set myofibroblasts apart from resident fibroblasts, are essential for myofibroblasts to develop arrhythmogenic interactions with cardiomyocy…

Sudden unexpected death due to inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the heart: a case report and review of the literature.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) or inflammatory pseudotumor is a rare primary cardiac tumor that may result in sudden death. We report a sudden unexpected death due to occlusion of the coronary arteries by IMT arising from the left coronary cusp of the aortic valve. An 8-year-old child suddenly woke up from his sleep with complaint of severe chest pain to his parents, and shortly he became unresponsive. He expired 40 min later in the hospital despite resuscitation efforts. The postmortem examination revealed a 2.5 × 2 × 1-cm mass composed of multiple entangled slender cylindrical fron

A rare case of pulmonary cryptococcal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology.

In a recent outbreak in British Columbia (BC), Canada, Cryptococcus gattii, a rare species of Cryptococcus, was noted to affect primarily immunocompetent hosts and cause limited pulmonary or CNS disease. We herein report a rare case of a pulmonary inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor caused by a Cryptococcus infection, presumed to be of the gattii species, in a 20-year-old immunocompetent college student from Vancouver, BC who presented with a large lung mass. The diagnosis was first made on the fine needle aspirate (FNA) material and was confirmed on the concurrent histologic core biopsy. Crypt

Autocrine production of TGF-beta1 promotes myofibroblastic differentiation of neonatal lung mesenchymal stem cells.

We have isolated mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from tracheal aspirates of premature infants with respiratory distress. We examined the capacity of MSCs to differentiate into myofibroblasts, cells that participate in lung development, injury, and repair. Gene expression was measured by array, qPCR, immunoblot, and immunocytochemistry. Unstimulated MSCs expressed mRNAs encoding contractile (e.g., ACTA2, TAGLN), extracellular matrix (COL1A1 and ELN), and actin-binding (DBN1, PXN) proteins, consistent with a myofibroblast phenotype, although there was little translation into immunoreactive protein…

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the ileocecal mesentery mimicking abdominal lymphoma in childhood: report of two cases.

An inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is an uncommon benign tumor located in various organs that can be misdiagnosed as a malignant neoplasm. We herein present two patients with ileocecal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors. An abdominal mass was detected in a 13-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy who presented with paleness, fatigue, intermittent fever, and night sweating. The radiological findings confirmed a mass originating from the ileocecal region. The presumptive diagnosis was Burkitt's lymphoma. The histopathological diagnosis was inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. After a surgical r

Air bag injury as a cause of inflammatory myofibroblastic pseudotumour of the subglottic larynx progressing to myositis ossificans.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic pseudotumour (IMFPT) is a rare condition. The clinical presentation can be indistinguishable from that of a malignant neoplasm. The most frequently affected organ is the lung; a much less common site is the larynx and subglottic involvement is particularly rare. Trauma is purportedly one potential aetiological factor, although there have been no previous reports of IMFPT occurring in the larynx secondary to external laryngeal trauma. We present a case of IMFPT of the subglottis which occurred subsequent to external trauma of the neck sustained during air bag inflat

ZO-1 reorganization and myofibroblast transformation of corneal endothelial cells after freeze injury in the cat.

Corneal endothelial wound healing following scrape injury in the rabbit and cat is characterized by cell spreading and maintenance of a normal endothelial phenotype consisting of apically-localized, circumferential microfilament bands and cell border-associated ZO-1, a tight junction protein and marker for endothelial differentiation. In contrast, after freeze injury in the rat and rabbit endothelial cells develop basally organized microfilament bundles (stress fibers), and appear to proliferate and form a multilayered zone at the wound margin. The purpose of the present study was to determine

Myofibroblastic proliferation on mitral valve chordae tendineae: a distinctive lesion associated with alcoholic liver disease.

Hearts from 1,676 consecutive autopsies were examined over a 4 1/2 year period between 1980 and 1984. Forty-seven (4.3%) of 1,083 adult hearts were found to have from one to nine distinctive bulbous thickenings (BTs) involving the mitral valve chordae tendineae. By light- and electron-microscopy, the BTs were found to consist of numerous myofibroblasts, collagen, and elastin layered over otherwise normal chordae and occasionally involving adjacent valve leaflets. No evidence of inflammation, rheumatic or otherwise, was found in histologic sections of the mitral, aortic, and tricuspid valves, o…

Case Report: Hepatic inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor versus hepatic inflammatory pseudotumor in pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Hepatic Inflammatory Pseudotumor (HIPT) and Hepatic Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor (HIMT) are rare pediatric liver lesions with highly similar clinical and pathological features, easily causing misdiagnosis. Accurate differentiation is critical as they require distinct clinical management strategies. CASE SUMMARY: Two pediatric hepatic mass cases were included. An 8-year-old girl presented with chronic abdominal pain and was diagnosed with HIMT, with no evidence of recurrence at 12-month follow-up after surgical resection. A 12-year-old girl presented with recurrent fever and
