Effects of Social Media Narratives on Affective and Behavioral Responses to Menopause Content: Randomized Online Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Social media is an increasingly prominent channel for communicating menopause information and experiences, yet the affective and behavioral consequences of different narrative framings remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: We examined how distress, normalizing, and transformative narratives influenced women's immediate responses to menopause content online, drawing on established narrative framings of menopause as normality, distress, and transformation. METHODS: In an online experiment, UK women aged 40 to 83 years who were perimenopausal or postmenopausal were recruited via Prolific, a wi

Navigating opioid use disorder treatment for pregnant and parenting people: composite narratives for policy action.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use in pregnancy and the postpartum period in the United States has continued to rise. There are significant barriers to accessing evidence-based treatment and appropriate wrap-around services for pregnant and postpartum individuals and their families. These challenges sit at the intersection of multiple incongruent and fragmented systems, including criminal justice, child welfare, childcare, health insurance, and physical and behavioral health treatment. To support and improve outcomes for this population, with their unique medical and social complexities, we seek to unders

Learning through story: how peer-led support groups use storytelling to empower adolescents living with HIV in Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents living with HIV struggle to accept their HIV status and remain adherent to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Support groups are one way to assist adolescents overcome these barriers. This evaluation, conducted in health facilities in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, explored the acceptability of peer-led support groups using a ten-topic curriculum and a 'storytelling' model in which fictional or real-life scenarios were used to make information more relatable and encourage discussion and sharing of personal experiences. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted to explore the acc

The use of storytelling in COVID-19 vaccine promotion: A scoping review of interventions and campaigns.

BACKGROUND: The development of the COVID-19 vaccine, a groundbreaking scientific advancement, also fueled vaccine hesitancy mainly due to vaccine misinformation and the limited public understanding of the new technology and its rapid pace of development and deployment. A variety of public health communication strategies have been used that include engaging the community in identifying and developing messages, using culturally appropriate communication methods, applying behavioral health principles, and storytelling. The purpose of this scoping review was to assess the most relevant evidence fr

Can machine learning predict PTSD symptoms from trauma narratives of children and adolescents?

Background: Machine learning approaches are being increasingly tested as a potential means of identifying mental health conditions. Narrative features of trauma memories are proposed to play a significant role in the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), meaning that trauma narratives provide an excellent context in which to test machine learning capabilities. The potential for children's trauma narratives to predict post-traumatic stress remains particularly poorly studied. Here, we tested whether the application of machine learning to trauma narrative characteristics can pred

Discourses of addiction in the construction of people whose drinking affected others in narratives about alcohol harms to others.

While research in alcohol harms to others (AHTO) has described the characteristics of people whose drinking affects others, few studies have investigated the construction of the affecting drinkers from the perspectives of those who have been affected. Drawing on data gathered through qualitative interviews with people who reported having been affected by others' drinking, a discourse analysis was conducted to examine how they constructed the drinkers who affected them in the stories about their experiences. The study focuses on stories about AHTO occurrences related to repeated, long-lasting h

Chemotherapy Under Fire: Narratives of Patients With Cancer During Wartime.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Patients with cancer living in regions of war face significant quality of life (QoL)-related concerns, both cancer- and war-related. This study examined the correlation between narratives of patients referred to an integrative oncology (IO) program in northern Israel and heart rate variability (HRV) measurements. METHODS: The study was nested within an ongoing prospective, randomized controlled trial, assessing IO interventions on QoL-related concerns among patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Patients reporting cancer- and war-related concerns were eligible for stud

Ethical challenges in sensitive research: a reflective narrative on managing the clinician-researcher dual role.

BACKGROUND: Conducting sensitive research in healthcare settings often presents complex ethical challenges, particularly when clinicians assume a dual role as researchers. This dual role, while providing valuable insight, can lead to ethical dilemmas when professional responsibilities intersect with research obligations, especially in resource-limited and culturally sensitive environments. This reflective narrative explores these ethical tensions through the lens of a qualitative study involving men living with advanced prostate cancer and their family caregivers. METHOD: The study employed a

Mapping fertility trajectories: An endarkened narrative inquiry of Black women's fertility experiences and pathways through infertility treatment.

While existing literature has documented barriers and facilitators to Black women's access to infertility treatment, scholars have a limited understanding of the experiences of Black women who have initiated medically assisted reproduction (MAR), including medicated timed intercourse, intrauterine insemination, and in vitro fertilization. Informed by Black feminism and reproductive justice, this endarkened narrative inquiry leveraged data from the Fertility Equity Study at Morehouse School of Medicine to characterize 41 Black women's infertility treatment outcomes and examine their trajectorie

Surgical decision-making regarding hearing and ear reconstruction in craniofacial microsomia: Exploring caregiver narratives.

Treatment decision-making is an integral but complex part of healthcare, particularly in the context of craniofacial surgeries. The aim of the current study was to explore caregiver narratives to inform future surgical care delivery and best practice. 'Life Story' narrative interviews were conducted with US English- and Spanish-speaking caregivers (n = 62) of children aged 3-17 years with craniofacial microsomia (CFM). Extracts relating to treatment decision-making were inductively coded using Reflexive Thematic Analysis. Four themes were identified: 1) 'Grappling with Difference' exemplifies

How Speech Production Affects Narrative Production in 4- to 6-Year-Old Children With Developmental Language Disorder and Poor Intelligibility.

BACKGROUND: Poor intelligibility is common in young children with developmental language disorders (DLDs). Relatedly, children with DLD and poor intelligibility, like children with DLD solely, have often also difficulties in other aspects of language abilities: such as making grammatical and cohesive sentences and telling narratives with an adequate plot structure. However, relatively few studies examined the relation between speech production, narrative cohesion, and narrative coherence in one and the same design. AIM: This research was conducted to investigate the relation between speech pr

Illness and narrative identity: examining past and future life story chapters in individuals with bipolar disorder, diabetes mellitus or no chronic illness.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether narrative identity challenges are specific to Bipolar Disorder (BD) as a mental illness or a reflection of living with chronic illness. Nineteen individuals diagnosed with BD, 29 individuals diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) and 25 controls without chronic mental or somatic illness identified past and future life story chapters which were self-rated on emotional tone and self-event connections and content-coded for agency and communion themes. Individuals with BD self-rated their past chapters as more negative and less positive,

Deaf/hard of hearing students' experiences with higher education's real-time captioning services.

Real-time captions appear to be an effective tool in assisting deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) college students' access information and communication in certain classroom settings. However, there is limited knowledge of DHH students' direct experiences with real-time captioning services. In this study, we gathered narratives from 15 DHH college students across the United States about their experiences with real-time captioning services in college. We analyzed the stories using thematic narrative analysis and uncovered 4 types that students told about their experiences. The story types were (a)

Digital Storytelling Intervention for Hemoglobin A1c Control Among Hispanic Adults With Type 2 Diabetes: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Hispanic adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) are more likely to develop complications and die from the disease than the US general population. Digital storytelling interventions are narrative-based videos elicited through a community-based participatory research approach to surface the authentic voices of participants overcoming obstacles to health-promoting behaviors that perpetuate health inequities; research on the effect of digital storytelling on T2D outcomes among Hispanic adults is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of a digital storytelling intervention on glycemic con

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) restrictions on visitation policies have created barriers for cancer caregivers and patients. Awareness of the critical role that cancer caregivers play should lead to better integration of the caregiver into clinical care and research after the pandemic ends.

Prediction of life-story narrative for end-of-life surrogate's decision-making is inadequate: a Q-methodology study.

BACKGROUND: Substituted judgment assumes adequate knowledge of patient's mind-set. However, surrogates' prediction of individual healthcare decisions is often inadequate and may be based on shared background rather than patient-specific knowledge. It is not known whether surrogate's prediction of patient's integrative life-story narrative is better. METHODS: Respondents in 90 family pairs (30 husband-wife, 30 parent-child, 30 sibling-sibling) rank-ordered 47 end-of-life statements as life-story narrative measure (Q-sort) and completed instruments on decision-control preference and healthcare-

The role of consistency in use of morphosyntactic forms in child-directed speech in the acquisition of Irish, a minority language undergoing rapid language change.

Irish is a rapidly changing minority language spoken as the main community language in some areas of the officially Irish-speaking Gaeltacht regions in Ireland. We analyse narratives from 17 parent-child dyads, living in one such area. All children, aged 3-6;4, had high exposure to the local variety of Irish. The input quality was measured by specifying consistency and accuracy of use of morphosyntactic forms in parental narratives directed to their children. The same morphosyntactic forms were analysed in narrative retell by the children. The children produced with high accuracy those forms t

Representations of Patients' Experiences of Autonomy in Graphic Medicine.

I advocate using graphic medicine in introductory medical ethics courses to help trainees learn about patients' experiences of autonomy. Graphic narratives about this content offer trainees opportunities to gain insights into making diagnoses and recommending treatments. Graphic medicine can also illuminate aspects of patients' experiences of autonomy differently than other genres. Specifically, comics allow readers to consider visual and text-based representations of a patient's actions, speech, thoughts, and emotions. Here, I use Ellen Forney's Marbles: Mania, Depression, Michelangelo, and M

Letters to anorexia. Narrative tools for working with anorectic patientsin a Dialogical Self context.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic arterial occlusive disease of the lower limbs, a common (800,000 patients in France) invalidating condition, can involve one or more arterial territories. In 90% of the cases, it is related to a more general disease, atherosclerosis. The risk factors are the same as for atherosclerosis and can be classed into three distinct groups: pathological conditions, constitutional characteristics, and lifestyle. Besides age and gender, smoking habits are by far the most predominant vascular risk factor for chronic arterial occlusive disease. Other factors include diabetes, known to pl
