The changing context of hepatitis D.

The global epidemiology of hepatitis D is changing with the widespread implementation of vaccination against hepatitis B. In high-income countries that achieved optimal control of HBV, the epidemiology of hepatitis D is dual, consisting of an ageing cohort of domestic patients with advanced liver fibrosis who represent the end stage of the natural history of HDV, and of a younger generation of immigrants from endemic countries who account for the majority of new infections. As observed in Europe in the 1980s, the distinctive clinical characteristic of chronic hepatitis D in endemic countries i

Clinical Unmet Needs in the Treatment of Adrenal Crisis: Importance of the Patient's Perspective.

Adrenal crisis is the most severe manifestation of adrenal insufficiency (AI), but AI can present with variable signs and symptoms of gradual severity. Despite current hormone replacement strategies, adrenal crisis is still one of the leading causes of mortality in AI patients. Although underlying factors explaining differences in interindividual susceptibility are not completely understood, several subgroups are particularly vulnerable to adrenal crises, such as patients with primary AI, and patients treated for Cushing's syndrome. Currently, the health care professional faces several challen

Business continuity, emergency planning and special needs: How to protect the vulnerable.

Emergencies and disasters affect all segments of the population. Some segments are more at risk during the emergency response and recovery efforts owing to vulnerabilities that increase the risk of harm. These vulnerabilities are due to individuals' disabilities, which must be incorporated into emergency and business continuity planning. Some disabilities are obvious, such as impaired vision, hearing or mobility, while other are less evident, but equally disabling, such as cognitive disorders, geographical or language isolation, and numerous age-related factors. Taken together when creating em

Review article: patients' fears and unmet needs in inflammatory bowel disease.

The management of chronic illness is becoming increasingly patient-centred. Although patients with inflammatory bowel disease have a normal life expectancy, most individuals experience an impact of inflammatory bowel disease on their daily lives as well as on their attitudes, fears and beliefs. Although currently available therapies for ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are becoming increasingly effective, there are still many unmet needs to address in this patient population. Physicians and patients' spouses or significant others underestimate the type and severity of problems reported b

Unmet needs in the treatment of asthmatic children and adolescents: 1.

The paediatric asthma guidelines have been successful in providing a uniform approach to the management of asthma for the medical profession as a whole. Unfortunately, the guidelines were generated without input from patients themselves and consequently do not consider issues that are important to patients such as a preference for oral treatment. Asthma is a heterogeneous group of conditions and the guidelines do not sufficiently define subgroups of patients and their particular needs. As a result, there has been a tendency to assume that all wheezing in infancy is asthma and this had led to g

Urethral catheter selection.

Many patients undergo urethral catheterisation. Selecting the most appropriate catheter for an individual patient requires knowledge and a practical understanding of the types of catheter available. A number of factors should be considered in catheter selection, including patient needs, indications for catheterisation, the type of material, the balloon size and the length and diameter of the catheter. The aim of this article is to provide information that will clarify some of the concerns nurses might have regarding urethral catheterisation.

Estimating the need for palliative care services in Australia by 2042.

BACKGROUND: As in many countries, Australians are living longer and experience greater rates of chronic conditions. This can require greater use of palliative care services. METHODS: Using national mortality data and population projections, the study used two methods to estimate the observed (2011 to 2022) palliative care need in Australia by age, sex, and geographica

Social media listening study to understand the journey and unmet needs of patients living with post-stroke spasticity.

PURPOSE: Stroke survivors may develop spasticity (post-stroke spasticity [PSS]) that can challenge activity and participation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A subset of 417 patient-centric PSS-related posts published on major social media platforms was identified for analysis from 31 600 retrieved. RESULTS: Posts mainly discussed patient journey (centred around treatmen
