KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Giant cell tumor of bone (GCT) is a rare neoplasm which often presents as a lytic lesion in the epiphyseal region of long bones and which are usually accompanied by pain, swelling, and restricted movement.
ABSTRACT: Giant cell tumor of bone (GCT) is a rare neoplasm that affects individuals in their third and fourth decades of life. Clinically, it often presents as a lytic lesion in the epiphyseal region of bones, notably the distal femur and proximal tibia. Radiologically, GCT appears as a distinct lytic lesion in the epiphyseal region. Histopathologically, GCTs are comp

Previously considered as one of the less-invasive subtypes of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm, intraductal oncocytic papillary neoplasm (IOPN) has recently been acknowledged as a new entity of pancreatic tumor. We herein present a case of preoperatively diagnosable IOPN invasion in the stomach and colon. A 78-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for evaluation of anorexia and gastroesophageal reflux. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a gastric subepithelial lesion with ulcerated mucosa that required hemostasis. Computed tomography revealed a 96-mm-diameter solid tumor wi

The latest WHO classification of the female genital tract tumors introduces a new type of carcinoma: the primary gastric-type (or gastro-intestinal type) carcinoma of the endometrium. This type of neoplasm tends to have a poor outcome, making its correct diagnostic important. As little is known about this entity and given its quite challenging diagnosis, we aim to review existing data about it and propose a practical diagnostic approach. There are currently 11 cases published in 8 articles fitting the precise definition of a primary gastric-type carcinoma of the endometrium. Three main differe

OBJECTIVE: Adrenocorticotropic hormone-producing pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm (ACTHoma) is an exceedingly rare type of pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm (pNEN) that often causes ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone syndrome. These neoplasms have been found to be very aggressive and challenging to treat. The current systematic review aimed to analyze the clinical features, immunohistochemical characteristics, diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis of ACTHoma.
METHODS: A systematic review of the English- and Chinese-language literature was performed. PubMed, EMBASE, and Wanfang databases were

PAX 8 is a transcription factor that is essential for embryonic development of the kidney, Müllerian organs, and thyroid. It may also have a role in tumor development in these organs. The diagnostic utility of PAX 8 has not been comprehensively studied. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples for non-neoplastic tissues (n=1601), primary neoplasms (n=933), and metastatic neoplasms (n=496) were subjected to PAX 8 immunostain. In non-neoplastic tissues, PAX 8 was consistently noted in glomerular parietal epithelial cells, renal collecting ductal cells, atrophic renal tubular epithelial c

Feline extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is an uncommon plasma cell neoplasm typically regarded as biologically benign; however, its clinical behaviour may be heterogeneous. This case report describes an aggressive gingival EMP in a 14-year-old neutered male Turkish Angora cat, characterised by alveolar bone lysis and cytologically confirmed regional lymph node metastasis in the absence of systemic features consistent with multiple myeloma. Histopathological examination revealed an infiltrative round cell neoplasm with high mitotic index, and strong diffuse MUM-1 immunoreactivity confirmed the

A 12-y-old, 654-kg, Santa Gertrudis cow was presented to the veterinary hospital with acute abdominal distension and a large mass on the left side of the neck. Upon presentation, the patient was bright and alert, with a corticosteroid stress leukogram, hyperglycemia, and mildly increased blood urea nitrogen and creatine kinase activity. A firm, 15 × 10-cm, non-painful left-sided proximal cervical mass and ruminal tympany were appreciable. A fine-needle aspirate of the mass was performed, and cytological findings were consistent with a neuroendocrine neoplasm. Given the large size of the mass a

Pilomatrix carcinoma is a rare malignancy stemming from aberrant proliferation of matrical cells found in developing hair. This neoplasm demonstrates a bimodal age distribution and a proclivity for developing on the head or neck. Clinically, a firm, painless, violaceous nodule with overlying ulceration is commonly described. Pilomatrix carcinoma is considered a variable-grade malignancy that tends to be locally aggressive, though metastatic disease occurs in 10 to 16 percent of cases. Mortality rates range from 7 to 9 percent. Although there is no definitive treatment protocol, surgical interv

RATIONALE: Bladder cancer (BC) is commonly diagnosed in the urinary system and the most common subtype is transitional urothelial carcinoma (TCC). Even with the best treatment, tumor recurrence and metastases always occur. While clinicians commonly observe the metastases to pelvic lymph nodes, liver, lung, and bone, it may infrequently spread to some uncommon locations.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient was a 67-year-old man with a diagnosis of high-grade TCC with squamous differentiation in the bladder and prostate. Subsequently, radical cystoprostatectomy, adjuvant radiotherapy, and chemotherap

BACKGROUND:: Most prevalent esophageal neoplasm is squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Other tumors are uncommon and poorly studied. Primary neuroendocrine esophageal neoplasm is a rare carcinoma and most of its therapy management is based on lung neuroendocrine studies. Neuroendocrine tumors can be clustered in the following subtypes: high grade (small cell carcinoma or large cell carcinoma) and low grade (carcinoids).
OBJECTIVE:: The present study aims to assess clinical and pathological neuroendocrine esophageal tumors in a single oncologic center.
METHODS:: A retrospective analys

Inverted papilloma is a rare benign neoplasm that usually originates in the lateral nasal wall. It can be a locally aggressive lesion and invade nearby structures. While primarily a nasal neoplasm, cases of an inverted papilloma involving the temporal bone, pharynx, nasopharynx, and lacrimal sac have been reported. We describe the case of a 67-year-old man with a history of nasal inverted papilloma who presented with a recurrent nasal mass and a large mass on the left side of his upper neck. The patient's history included inverted papillomas in multiple locations: the temporal bone, the sinona

CONTEXT: The advantage of intraoperative gamma probe detection with (111)In-DPTA-octreotide radiotracer has previously been demonstrated in functional neuroendocrine tumors. We report the only known case of a recurrent nonfunctional pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm localized intraoperatively using this radiotracer and a hand held gamma probe.
CASE REPORT: A 51-year-old woman was found to have a recurrence 23 months after laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy, splenectomy and wedge resection of a liver metastasis for a non-functional neuroendocirne neoplasm of the pancreas. CT scan and (111)In-

This review analyzes current pitfalls in pretreatment staging of endometrial and cervical carcinoma with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based on a critical review of the literature. Technical, patient, and tumor-related characteristics were analyzed to improve further staging of uterine neoplasm with MRI. For endometrial carcinoma staging, contrast-enhanced dynamic imaging appears essential to avoid false-positive findings for deep myometrial invasion by better delineating tumor from normal myometrium. However, leiomyomas, adenomyosis, and grade 3 tumors provide difficulties in staging for p

BACKGROUND: Merkel cell (neuroendocrine) carcinoma is a small round blue cell malignant neoplasm that primarily presents in the skin. The diagnosis of Merkel cell carcinoma in a pleural fluid is challenging because of the morphological similarity to many other malignant neoplasms. Immunohistochemical stains can be essential to establish the diagnosis of Merkel cell carcinoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77 year-old woman presented with a mass in her right buttock thought clinically to be a boil or sebaceous cyst. Upon histopathologic review including immunohistochemical analysis, a diagnosis of Merke

The availability of uniform and precise criteria for disease evaluation, response to treatment, and clinical staging of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) in individuals with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) would facilitate therapeutic trials in patients with this neoplasm. Recently, a group of oncologists conducting clinical trials in patients with AIDS-associated KS as part of a cooperative group established by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) drafted such criteria. The criteria take into account the unique problems associated with the evaluation of patient

Invasive lobular breast cancer (ILBC) is a common cause of breast cancer. Prognosis is dependent on many factors such as metastasis location and hormone receptor positivity. A 59-year-old postmenopausal African-American female who was referred to our clinic in May of 2022 presented with a suspicious small bowel lesion seen on surveillance imaging. The patient was diagnosed 15 years prior, with hormone receptor triple positive ILBC of the left breast, T1N2M0. In March of 2021, the patient was admitted to the hospital for rectal bleeding and was also found to have an elevated carcinoembryonic an

PURPOSE: Tenosynovial giant cell tumor of the diffuse type (TGCT-D) involving the spine is rare. Its differential diagnosis includes metastatic disease; however, there have been few reports of spinal TGCT-D mimicking spinal metastasis in patients with a history of malignancy.
METHODS: We report on a 35-year-old woman with a history of papillary thyroid cancer who was diagnosed with TGCT-D of the thoracic spine mimicking spinal metastasis. Preoperative computed tomography (CT) revealed a 1.0 × 1.0-cm lytic bone lesion involving the left T7 vertebral lamina, pedicle, and the T6-7 facet joint; t

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare lung-metastasizing neoplasm caused by the proliferation of smooth muscle-like cells that commonly carry loss-of-function mutations in either the tuberous sclerosis complex 1 or 2 (TSC1 or TSC2) genes. While allosteric inhibition of the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) has shown substantial clinical benefit, complementary therapies are required to improve response and/or to treat specific patients. However, there is a lack of LAM biomarkers that could potentially be used to monitor the disease and to develop other targeted therapies. We hypothesize

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver malignant neoplasm. Multiple risk factors have been identified for several decades for this overly aggressive tumor. HCC is an overly aggressive malignancy with frequent intrahepatic and extrahepatic metastasis. In our practice, we have observed that HCC has the propensity to metastasize to very unusual sites and can sometimes show variable patterns leading to diagnostic difficulty. In this study of 257 patients, we aim to discuss the unusual sites of HCC metastasis, the various patterns of metastasis, clinicopathological features
