BACKGROUND: The theory that estrogens are causally associated with increased risk of breast cancer and the question of whether lifetime cumulative exposure is necessary are critically reviewed.
METHODS: Systematic search was made of published epidemiological and clinical data relating to estrogen concentrations at different times and situations, and of breast cancer incidence with age and after lifestyle changes.

The influence of regional liver hyperthermia in conjunction with systemic doxorubicin administration was examined in a rabbit VX2 tumour model. Hyperthermia was delivered by 2450MHz microwave generator to the exteriorised livers of the rabbits to provide a thermal dose equivalent of 43 degrees C for 30 minutes. A tumor model was developed in DBA/2 mice for studying the progression of the mastocytoma P 815 X 2 tumor. Tumor cells obtained from ascites were grown in vitro. The number of cells derived from a single clone was increased by in vitro culture. Cells were then injected either i.v. or i.p. into DBA/2 mice. Brain tumours were induced by intracerebral inoculation of beagle puppies with Avian sarcoma virus (ASV) suspension. The inoculation produced solitary or multiple sarcomas in three dogs and intraventricular anaplastic gliomas in four dogs. Autochthonous neurogenic tumors of the rat induced by transplacental application of ethylnitrosourea were used for the first time to study their suitability as tumor models for experimental chemotherapy. Of 189 transplacentally treated rats, 87% developed neurogenic tumors. After the initial clinical diagnosis of a neurogenic tumor, additional malignant tumors often occurred. Diets containing either 49.5% or 32% casein or fish protein concentrate (FPC) were fed to young rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) for 12 months. Five levels [0, 2, 6, 18, and 54 parts per billion (ppb)] of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) were given in each of four different diets.
