Small cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix: cytologic findings in 13 cases.

BACKGROUND: There are few reports on the cytologic features of small cell carcinoma (SMCC) of the uterine cervix. METHODS: The clinical records, histopathology, and available cervical smears from all cases of SMCC of the uterine cervix in the files of the British Columbia Cancer Agency between 1985 and 1997 were reviewed. RESULTS: Cervical smears were available from 11 of 13 identified cases. Six cases had a pretreatment smear containing numerous definitely malignant cells. In the seven cases with reported negative smears, review of the most recent smears detected a missed high grade squamou

[Histochemical identification of endogenous lectins using labelled neoglycoproteins in human head-and-neck squamous cell carcinoma].

According to the "Population-based cancer register" of the Federal Republic of Germany only malignant neoplasms of the buccal cavity, the pharynx and larynx as well as cancers of the respiratory tract show an increasing rate of incidence and mortality. The molecular mechanisms and etiological factors causing this phenomenon are still little understood despite intensive research work. Recognition between receptors on a cellular level may be mediated by specific amino acid sequences on the level of protein-protein recognition. Additionally, the interactions between cell sugars and the correspond

Metallothionein gene expression is altered in oral cancer and may predict metastasis and patient outcomes.

AIMS: Metallothioneins (MTs) are proteins associated with the carcinogenesis and prognosis of various tumours. Previous studies have shown their potential as biomarkers in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Aiming to understand more clearly the function of MTs in OSCC we evaluated, for the first time, the gene expression profile of MTs in this neoplasm. MATERIALS AND RESULTS: Tissue samples from 35 cases of tongue and/or floor of mouth OSCC, paired with their corresponding non-neoplastic oral mucosa (NNOM), were retrieved (2007-09). All tissues were analysed for the following genes using Ta

Non-epithelial tumors of the larynx: case series of 12 years.

PURPOSE: Laryngeal neoplasms are almost always epithelial in origin and squamous cell carcinoma is the most common tumor of the larynx. Non-epithelial tumors make a small subset of laryngeal neoplasms. We present the experience of a single institution to define clinical presentations and outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The pathology archives and clinical records of our center with the diagnosis of laryngeal tumors between the 2005 and 2018 were reviewed. Age, gender, symptoms, location of the tumor, histopathological diagnosis, treatment modality and disease status were discussed. RESULTS:

Dermatoscopy of Neoplastic Skin Lesions: Recent Advances, Updates, and Revisions.

Dermatoscopy (dermoscopy) improves the diagnosis of benign and malignant cutaneous neoplasms in comparison with examination with the unaided eye and should be used routinely for all pigmented and non-pigmented cutaneous neoplasms. It is especially useful for the early stage of melanoma when melanoma-specific criteria are invisible to the unaided eye. Preselection by the unaided eye is therefore not recommended. The increased availability of polarized dermatoscopes, and the extended use of dermatoscopy in non-pigmented lesions led to the discovery of new criteria, and we recommend that lesions

[Heavy water (D20) inhibits growth of human xenotransplanted oropharyngeal cancers. An animal experiment study in nude mice].

The large mass ratio of D to H, 2 to 1, gives rise to multiple effects in living organisms, when D is administered as heavy water (D2O). Deuterium at high concentration interferes with cell division and depresses the uptake of DNA-precursors in mammalian cells (Katz et al., 1970). However, the effects of D2O on the organism disappear after cessation of deuteration of the body water. Mammals do not survive more than 35% of D2O substitution for normal water in their body fluids for long periods of time. However, mice drinking 30% D2O have a normal life span and normal body weight (Katz et al., 1

Multiple myeloma presenting as gingival hyperplasia.

Multiple myeloma is a malignant neoplasm that is characterized by a monoclonal proliferation of plasma cells. Oral and maxillofacial manifestations as an initial sign or symptom of multiple myeloma are rare. A 58-year-old male patient presented with generalized gingival enlargement for last 6 months. Based on clinical presentation, a diagnosis of gingival hyperplasia was made. After Phase I therapy, excisional biopsy was taken in anterior mandibular region and excised tissue was sent for histopathological examination. The histopathology report revealed a lining of stratified squamous epitheliu

Modeling Oral-Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma in 3D Organoids.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is prevalent worldwide, accounting for 90% of all esophageal cancer cases each year, and is the deadliest of all human squamous cell carcinomas. Despite recent progress in defining the molecular changes accompanying ESCC initiation and development, patient prognosis remains poor. The functional annotation of these molecular changes is the necessary next step and requires models that both capture the molecular features of ESCC and can be readily and inexpensively manipulated for functional annotation. Mice treated with the tobacco smoke mimetic 4-nitroq

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma: clinical and pathologic features and a discussion on classification, cellular differentiation, and differential diagnosis.

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) is an uncommon, highly aggressive, and clinicopathologically distinctive carcinoma of uncertain histogenesis. SNUC typically presents as a rapidly enlarging tumor mass involving multiple (sinonasal tract) sites, often with evidence of extension beyond the anatomic confines of the sinonasal tract. The light microscopic features include the presence of a hypercellular proliferation with varied growth patterns, including trabecular, sheet-like, ribbon, lobular, and organoid patterns. The tumor cells are medium to large sized and round to oval and have p

Foamy Cell Angiosarcoma in a Patient with Xeroderma Pigmentosum: A Case Report and Comprehensive Review of the Literature.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by a DNA repair defect caused by ultraviolet light and cutaneous manifestations, including solar lentigines, xerosis, actinic damage, and cutaneous neoplasms (e.g., basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma). Cutaneous angiosarcoma (AS) is a rare group of aggressive skin tumors that infrequently occur in patients with XP, usually involving the scalp or face. The AS has three subtypes: idiopathic, complicating lymphedema, and post-irradiation. The AS has diverse histopathological types, and the unc

P-cadherin and the journey to cancer metastasis.

P-cadherin is a classical cell-to-cell adhesion molecule with a homeostatic function in several normal tissues. However, its behaviour in the malignant setting is notably dependent on the cellular context. In some tumour models, such as melanoma and oral squamous cell carcinoma, P-cadherin acts as a tumour suppressor, since its absence is associated with a more aggressive cancer cell phenotype; nevertheless, the overexpression of this molecule is linked to significant tumour promoting effects in the breast, ovarian, prostate, endometrial, skin, gastric, pancreas and colon neoplasms. Herein, we

An Unusual Case of Human Papillomavirus-Related Anorectal Adenocarcinoma With Progression to Perianal Paget's Disease.

Primary adenocarcinoma of the anorectum, compared with squamous cell carcinoma, is a rarer and more aggressive malignant neoplasm. Infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) has been identified as a causal agent in a variety of tumors, including those of the cervix, head and neck, and anogenital region, especially squamous cell carcinoma. However, the relationship between HPV and anorectal adenocarcinoma has not been well studied. In this article, we report an HPV-related anorectal adenocarcinoma arising in a tubulovillous adenoma in a 76 years old female who presented initially with lower gast

[Skin cancer as occupational disease].

The incidence of epithelial skin neoplasms, such as squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma is significantly increasing worldwide. Leisure time solar UV exposure is causative in the overwhelming majority of cases in the general population; however, occupational exposure is responsible for a certain percentage of cases. Employees with a relevant exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soot, raw paraffin, coal tar, anthracene, pitch or similar substances, to sunlight in outdoor occupations as well as to arsenic and ionizing radiation have a significantly increased risk to develo

Invasive Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Larynx in a Dog.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a malignant epithelial neoplasm commonly affecting the skin and oral cavity of dogs, whereas laryngeal involvement is considered rare. Neoplasms arising in the larynx may cause severe upper airway obstruction and present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to the anatomical and functional constraints of this region. An 11-year-old neutered male mixed-breed dog was evaluated for a one-month history of progressive upper airway obstruction characterized by dyspnea, tachypnea, and dysphagia. Clinical examination revealed a solitary mass protruding into the la
