By means of an exact nephrologic examination 6 weeks post partum of 128 patients with hypertension in pregnancy an exact classification in preeclampsia (46 per cent), chronic hypertension (34%) and superimposed preeclampsia (13 per cent) is possible. In cases of essential hypertension a hypotensive therapy is necessary.

In order to appreciate and define the role of nephrologists in the newly defined cardio-kidney metabolic (CKM) syndrome, we acknowledge the important shift that must occur from a specialty that has traditionally focused on treating people with organ failure, to one that needs to now embrace the concept of prevention, early diagnosis, and delay of progression as complimentary to historical roles as providers of dialysis and transplantation. We describe the value that nephrology can play in further refining the CKM model to acknowledge the importance of the diagnostic precision of CKD, and kidne…

Automated urine technology and centralized laboratory testing are becoming the standard for providing urinalysis data to clinicians, including nephrologists. This trend has had the unintended consequence of making examination of urine sediment by nephrologists a relatively rare event. In addition, the nephrology community appears to have lost interest in and forgotten the utility of provider-performed urine microscopy. However, it is critical to remember that urine sediment examination remains a time-honored test that provides a wealth of information about the patient's underlying kidney disea…

BACKGROUND: There is growing interest in the nephrology community for environmentally sustainable kidney care (ESKC) to alleviate the environmental impact of kidney care services.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the knowledge of Canadian kidney care providers regarding their program's ESKC strategies.
DESIGN SETTING PARTICIPANTS MEASUREMENTS AND METHODS: An electronic survey, created by the Canadian Society of Nephrology-Sustainable Nephrology Action Planning committee, was distributed to Canadian kidney care providers.
RESULTS: A total of 421 Canadian kidney care providers responded …

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects 8-16% of adults worldwide, including nearly 4 million Canadians. As the disease progresses, patients often experience a significant decline in quality of life (QoL), driven by disease-related symptoms and the burden of renal replacement therapies (RRT) such as dialysis and transplantation. In addition to physical symptoms, up to 55% of patients report psychological distress, including depression and anxiety. Despite this, mental health needs are frequently under-identified and insufficiently addressed in nephrology care. There is limited underst…

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal sonographic evidence of large, echogenic, or cystic kidneys may indicate any one of a diverse set of disorders including renal ciliopathies, congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT), or multisystem syndromic disorders. Systematic transition planning for these infants from in utero detection to post-natal nephrology management remains to be established.
AIM OF THE WORK: We sought to evaluate the presentation and transition planning for infants identified in utero with bilateral renal cystic disease.
METHODS: Our retrospective observational study iden…

BACKGROUND: Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors (RAASi) improve prognosis in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), but suboptimal dosing or discontinuation of these medications often occurs due to RAASi-associated hyperkalaemia. We established a nephrology-led hyperkalaemia clinic to oversee prescribing of patiromer, an oral potassium binder, to facilitate RAASi optimization.
METHODS: The clinic was established in July 2019 at a nephrology tertiary centre in the UK. Patients with HFrEF who were unable to increase RAASi dosage due to hyperkalaemia were…

BACKGROUND: Gender disparities had been noted in the care of women with end stage renal disease (ESRD) in the early 2000's, including less frequent initiation of hemodialysis utilizing a fistula but more recent data have not been examined and underlying factors have not been extensively studied.
STUDY DESIGN: Data from the United States Renal Data System (USRDS) were examined, including 202,999 hemodialysis patients. Only those who had received prior nephrology care were included. Multiple logistic regression was used, adjusted for possible confounders, including age, race, cause of ESRD, BMI…

This paper refers to selected reports on nephrology and renal dialysis therapy presented on the XXXVIII Congress of European Renal Association--European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA), held in 2001 in Vienna. Special attention was paid to diagnosis and therapy of renal anaemia, calcium-phosphate metabolism, Fabry's disease and vascular access in hemodialysed patients.

Hyperkalemia, characterized by an elevated serum potassium level, is a common and serious complication in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). It can lead to major cardiovascular disorders, making rigorous management essential. Objective: To study the determinants of hyperkalemia in patients with renal failure undergoing conservative treatment followed at the CNHU-HKM in Cotonou (Bénin) in 2024. This was a cross-sectional study conducted from October 1 to December 31, 2024, involving patients monitored in the teaching nephrology and hemodialysis clinic for end-stage chronic kidney disea…

Introduction. Eighty percent of children with primitive nephrotic syndrome (NS) will have at least one relapse in their life. Specific risk factors could be associated with a higher incidence of relapses and a worse prognosis. This study aims to deepen the demographic and onset-related risk factors in children with known diagnosis of primitive NS attending the Pediatric Nephrology Unit of the University Hospital of Padua. Methods. Observational, descriptive study of all children (1-11 years old) with a known diagnosis of Primitive NS who attended our Pediatric Nephrology Unit between 1 January…

Urinary diversion after cystectomy has been a historical standard for the treatment of numerous benign and malignant diseases of the bladder … rocedure that negates the need for self-catheterization. AIM: This study explored any variations in managing childhood nephrotic syndrome between specialist centres in Nigeria and how closely the care reflected the best available evidence.
METHODS: In 2016, the heads of Nigerian paediatric nephrology units were asked to complete a study questionnaire that focused on managing nephrotic syndrome.
RESULTS: Of the 31 clinicians we approached, 81% returned the completed questionnaire. The majority (64%) had received paediatric nephrology training and 40% had practised for at least 10 years. We found that 60% prescribed an initial daily prednisolone for…

BACKGROUND: Antibiotics are among the most commonly prescribed drugs in paediatrics. In most cases, antibiotics are started on an empirical basis, without proof of a bacterial infection, either before the start of therapy or afterwards.
AIM: The main objective of this study was to analyse the consumption of antibiotics in hospitalised paediatric patients.

The patient was discharged with a potassium level of 4.0 and instructions to follow up with nephrology and begin supplementation. This case underscores the importance of considering cannabinoid ingestion in the differential diagnosis of unexplained hypokalemia without GI manifestations.

A 32-year-old woman had experienced recurrent seizures since infancy, with progressive ataxia, dystonia, and electrolyte disturbances, suggesting a possible genetic tubulopathy with neurological manifestations. The complexity of her presentation highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and the role of genetic investigations in uncovering rare conditions that bridge neurology and nephrology.

Vascular access planning guidelines have shifted from a fistula-centered to a patient-centered approach. We advocate for expansion of the shared decision-making dyad between the nephrology team and patient to include other vascular access planning stakeholders. We propose earlier and consistent interprofessional collaboration facilitates more constructive discussions that could improve outcomes.
