Polymer Scaffolds for Biomedical Applications in Peripheral Nerve Reconstruction.

The nervous system is a significant part of the human body, and peripheral nerve injury caused by trauma can cause various functional disorders. When the broken end defect is large and cannot be repaired by direct suture, small gap sutures of nerve conduits can effectively replace nerve transplantation and avoid the side effect of donor area disorders. There are many choices for nerve conduits, and natural materials and synthetic polymers have their advantages. Among them, the nerve scaffold should meet the requirements of good degradability, biocompatibility, promoting axon growth, supporting

Gastrointestinal stromal tumours: an immunohistochemical study of 165 cases.

The phenotype of 165 gastrointestinal stromal tumours was studied by immunohistochemistry. In each case the phenotype was compared to the histological diagnosis. The phenotype was muscle in 49 tumours (30%), neural in 18 (11%), histiocytic in 20 (12%) and mixed in five (3%); 68 tumours (41%) were positive for vimentin only, four tumours had no markers and one tumour was positive for keratin only. Histologically, the tumours were classified as smooth muscle, probably smooth muscle, probably nerve sheath tumours or tumours of undetermined differentiation. In 30 histologically unequivocal muscle

A Nonhuman Primate Model to Evaluate Treatments for Long-Gap Ulnar Nerve Injury.

Among all upper extremity nerves, the ulnar nerve is both the most commonly injured and notoriously difficult to regenerate. Despite this, ulnar nerve injuries remain understudied. Nonhuman primates (NHPs) offer an ideal model for the human upper extremity, but existing NHP nerve trauma literature is biased towards median and radial injury models. To address this, a nonhuman primate ulnar nerve injury model was developed and regeneration assessed following sural nerve autografting using electrophysiological and histological techniques. Unilateral 4 cm ulnar nerve injuries were created at the m

Three-dimensional evaluation of retinal ganglion cell axon regeneration and pathfinding in whole mouse tissue after injury.

Injured retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axons do not regenerate spontaneously, causing loss of vision in glaucoma and after trauma. Recent studies have identified several strategies that induce long distance regeneration in the optic nerve. Thus, a pressing question now is whether regenerating RGC axons can find their appropriate targets. Traditional methods of assessing RGC axon regeneration use histological sectioning. However, tissue sections provide fragmentary information about axonal trajectory and termination. To unequivocally evaluate regenerating RGC axons, here we apply tissue clearance

The effect of co-transplantation of nerve fibroblasts and Schwann cells on peripheral nerve repair.

Combinations of fibroblasts (Fbs) and corresponding epithelial cells have been widely used in many tissues, such as the skin and breast tissues, to augment tissue repair and remodeling. Recently, a large amount of new data has indicated that nerve Fbs play critical roles in Schwann cells (SCs) and axons in vitro. However, little is known regarding the effects of co-transplanting nerve Fbs and SCs on peripheral nerve repair in vivo. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of co-transplanting sciatic nerve Fbs (SN-Fbs) and sciatic nerve SCs (SN-SCs) on nerve regeneration. We develope

Warming nerves for excitability testing.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to find the best method of warming the median nerve before excitability testing to a standard temperature. METHODS: In 5 healthy subjects, the forearm and hand were warmed for 1 h to 37°C by infrared lamp, water blanket, or water bath. Recordings were performed before and during warming every 10 min. Excitability indices were fitted by exponential relations, thereby calculating the time needed to reach 95% of their asymptotic end value. RESULTS: Distal motor latency, refractory period, and superexcitability at 10 ms changed exponentially with time. War

[Histopathology of the vestibular nerve in Menière's disease].

Histological and morphometrical investigations of the vestibular nerve were performed on surgical specimens from 19 patients suffering from Ménière's disease and on 5 autopsy preparations from patients without inner ear disease. The number of lipofuscin granules and vacuoles in the ganglion cells of specimens from Ménière patients was not increased compared with control specimens of a similar age, nor did the amount of endoneuronal connective tissue in the vestibular nerve specimens differ between the two groups. The density of capillaries in Scarpa's ganglion and vestibular nerve was signific

Nerve lesions about the shoulder.

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body. Because it serves as a way station for the nerves supplying the upper limb, it creates a potential for nerve lesions that may be caused or significantly influenced by the complex dynamics of the shoulder girdle. This article presents the most commonly encountered lesions as well as an algorithm for their diagnosis and treatment.

In vitro examination of degenerative evolution of adrenergic nerve endings in pulmonary inflammatory [corrected] processes in newborns.

Morphological aspect of tracheal preparations and pulmonary tissue was studied in vitro. The material was obtained from autopsy of newborns that died from different causes. Examinations were made in different gestational periods (immature 23-29 weeks; premature 30-37 weeks; mature >38 weeks). Material for examination was obtained up to 6 hours after death. Pulmonary and tracheal tissue was incubated for fixation in buffered formalin (10%). Special histochemical and histoenzymatic methods were used for coloring of pulmonary and tracheal tissue and the activity of ATP-ase and dopaoxidase was mon

Repair of complex digital soft-tissue defects using a free composite ulnar artery perforator flap from the volar wrist.

Digital skin defects resulting from trauma are often associated with dysfunction of the digital nerve and the extensor and flexor tendons in the affected fingers. The repair of these complex tissue defects requires a graft containing multiple tissues that can be used to reconstruct the tendons and nerves and restore the skin. Such procedures can cause multiple injuries and significant damage to the donor site. The current study used a novel technique to repair complex dorsal and palmar digital soft-tissue defects. First, multiple tissues were cut and collected from the donor site. Then, part o

[Cause of Bell's palsy: herpes simplex virus].

At present Bell's palsy (BP) is still defined as idiopathic unilateral facial paralysis of sudden onset. More than 20 years ago an aetiological link between herpes simplex virus (HSV) and BP was proposed. Numerous experiments in animals and in humans have been performed to test this hypothesis. However, the human facial nerve tissue itself was investigated in only a few of these studies. Two research lines were followed: (a) search for presence of latent HSV in the facial nerve of asymptomatic individuals (as shown earlier in the trigeminal nerve); (b) find 'active' HSV in tissues from BP pati…

Anti-ganglioside antibody positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders with peripheral neuropathy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) is a group of autoimmune-mediated disorders of the central nervous system primarily involving the optic nerve and spinal cord. There are limited reports of NMOSD associated with peripheral nerve damage. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 57-year-old female patient who met the diagnostic criteria for aquaporin 4 (AQP4)-IgG positive NMOSD with undifferentiated connective tissue disease and multiple peripheral neuropathy. In addition, the patient was positive for multiple anti-ganglioside antibodies (anti-GD1a IgG antibodies and anti-GD3 Ig

Ocular anomalies and holoprosencephaly in a lamb.

The brain and eyes from a 1-day-old, male mixed-breed lamb with bilateral microphthalmia were examined. Bilateral ventral colobomata of choroid, sclera, retina and optic nerve were accompanied by agenesis of the optic nerve, and dilated lateral and third ventricular cavities that communicated with the subarachnoid space. Abundant neuroretinal tissue extending through the colobomatous defect to retro-orbital connective tissue, the meningeal surface and ventricular system were identified by histologic examination. Positive immunolabeling of these structures for recoverin (a photoreceptor marker)

Radiographical documentation of direct injury of the intracanalicular segment of the optic nerve in the orbital apex syndrome.

In the radiographical evaluation of the orbital apex syndrome, standard radiographs, tomograms, and computed tomographic scans have proved useful in the demonstration of the bony pathology, especially for optic canal fractures. The limitation of these methods, however, remains in their inability to provide accurate delineation of the associated soft tissue pathology, including the presence of optic nerve sheath hematoma. Recent developments in computer technology and graphic imaging are now available to provide an accurate three-dimensional radiographical analysis of the extent of skeletal and
