Ece1 and Tbx1 define distinct pathways to aortic arch morphogenesis.

Pharyngeal arch artery (PAA) remodeling defects account for several cases of congenital heart disease. Mutations in the Endothelin-1 genetic pathway or Tbx1, a candidate gene for DiGeorge syndrome, cause similar aortic arch defects. Previous research suggests that Tbx1 may trigger diffusible signals from the pharyngeal arches to support the growth of the PAAs that contribute to the mature aortic arch. The demonstration of genetic interaction between Tbx1 and Fgf8 pointed to FGF signaling as a possible candidate. Because Fgf8 interacts with Endothelin-1 signaling and because Endothelin-1 signal

Facial dysmorphologic and skeletal cephalometric findings associated with conotruncal cardiac anomalies. off.

Anomalous conotruncal cardiac morphology and facial dysmorphology have been associated with neural crest-pharyngeal arch abnormalities. To assess these associations, 20 patients 3 to 18 years old with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) or persistent truncus arteriosus (PTA) were evaluated by cardiologic, facial dysmorphic, and cephalometric criteria. The average number of facial abnormalities of neural crest derivation was two, while pharyngeal arch derivative abnormalities were observed with an average of five defects per subject. The total group had many more facial malformations than normal populati

Electroactive biomaterials modulating ion channels in nervous system regeneration.

Traumatic injury to the central and peripheral nervous systems disrupts the electrophysiological microenvironment through persistent ionic dysregulation and maladaptive ion channel remodeling, creating conditions that are fundamentally hostile to endogenous repair. Conventional biomaterials, while offering structural support, remain electrically inert and unable to reconstitute the bioelectric signaling context essential for functional neural regeneration. Here, we review the emerging class of electroactive biomaterials, encompassing conductive and piezoelectric platforms that are engineered t

SIB-MIL: Sparsity-Induced Bayesian Neural Network for Robust Multiple Instance Learning on Whole Slide Image Analysis.

Multiple instance learning (MIL) has shown prominent success in analyzing whole slide histopathology images (WSIs). However, existing MIL methods often suffer from overfitting due to weak supervision and the "needle-in-a-haystack" nature of WSIs. Additionally, most deterministic approaches lack a mechanism for uncertainty quantification. While Bayesian neural networks (BNNs) have emerged as a promising solution to mitigate overfitting and enable uncertainty estimation by imposing prior constraints, commonly used Gaussian BNNs exhibit unstable posterior predictive distributions under weak super

Spatial spectral narrowing in the corticothalamic neural field model across consciousness states.

The neural correlates of consciousness have been characterized primarily through temporal EEG features, while the spatial dynamics of cortical activity across consciousness states remain poorly understood. Here, we analyze the spatial mode structure of the Robinson corticothalamic neural field model (CTM) across five consciousness states: healthy wakefulness, emergence from minimally conscious state (eMCS), minimally conscious state (MCS), deep sleep (N3), and unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS). We compute the noise-amplified spatial spectrum, which quantifies how the CTM filters spatiote

High-precision classification of WCE-based gastrointestinal abnormality using a fusion deep learning approach.

Gastrointestinal abnormalities are widespread worldwide and pose a significant health challenge. However, their mortality rate can be significantly reduced when they are detected early. Endoscopy is one of the key techniques used to diagnose problems in both the upper and lower gastrointestinal regions. It is also considered less invasive and more patient-friendly than many traditional diagnostic methods. Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (WCE)-based disorder detection and diagnosis have reached a point of convergence, reshaping the landscape. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment depend on the p

Network dynamics under neuronal degradation: A comparison between modular and small-world topologies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The human brain exhibits a complex organization that combines local segregation with global integration, typically characterized by modular structure and small-world topology. Structural alterations such as demyelination and neuronal loss disrupt this architecture and impair neural signal transmission. The specific contribution of network topology to the resulting functional decline, however, remains unclear. This study aims to investigate how network topology influences the resilience and functional degradation of neural systems under progressive damage. METHODS: Tw

Single Cell Transcriptomics of Traditional Chinese Medicine Bioactives: Mapping Immune, Neural and Hepatic Responses.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) bioactives display wide pharmacological effects, yet bulk transcriptomic studies mask their cell-specific actions. This study applied single-cell RNA sequencing to delineate immune, neural and hepatic responses to chemically characterized TCM constituents. Murine splenic, hippocampal and hepatic tissues were dissociated into single-cell suspensions, processed on a 10× Genomics platform, sequenced at high depth and analyzed with Seurat for clustering, marker annotation, differential expression and pathway enrichment; ligand-receptor interactions were inferred

A fault diagnosis model for pumping units based on small sample electric parameters.

In the field of modern petroleum industry, fault diagnosis and classification of pumping units are among the most crucial research topics. The conventional diagnostic method involves installing sensors on the pumping unit to analyze the dynamometer cards(DCs). However, due to the sensor cannot work stably for a long time and is easily damaged, a more stable and effective data source is required for diagnostics. Compared with the DCs, the parameters of the driving motor of the pumping unit can also effectively reflect the running state of the pumping unit. And the electrical parameters can be e

Specific recruitment properties of spinal reflex of thigh muscle in sprinter.

Thigh muscles activation pattern plays a key role in high-performance sprint running. We investigated spinal neural mechanisms underlying sprinters' specific thigh muscle control by examining spinal reflex recruitment properties and reciprocal inhibition of the thigh muscles in sprinters. Ten high-level national sprinters and ten controls participated in this study. Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) was used to evoke spinal reflexes in biceps femoris (BF) and soleus (SOL) muscles. To assess the recruitment properties of thigh muscles, in Experiment 1, tSCS was applied at varying in

Distinct oscillatory mechanisms in low and high alpha-band activities for screening and potential treatment of Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia (ScZ) is characterized by prominent perceptual abnormalities. A deeper understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying these abnormalities is crucial for developing precise treatment strategies. Our study aimed to address the following primary questions. First, the functional role of various sub-oscillations within the alpha band remains unclear. Second, we aimed to identify biomarkers for the diagnostic purposes of ScZ. Third, the broader question of whether the diagnostic biomarker can also function as a treatment biomarker remains unknown. Resting-state EEG data from 55 ScZ

Region-specific brain decellularized extracellular matrix promotes cell recovery in an in vitro model of stroke.

Brain decellularized extracellular matrix (ECM) can be an attractive scaffold capable of mimicking the native ecosystem of the central nervous system tissue. We studied the in vitro response of neural cultures exposed to region-specific brain decellularized ECM scaffolds from three distinct neuroanatomical sections: cortex, cerebellum and remaining areas. First, each brain region was evaluated with the isotropic fractionator method to understand the cellular composition of the different cerebral areas. Second, the cerebral regions were subjected to the decellularization process and their respe

Divergent interpersonal neural synchronization patterns in the first, second language and interlingual communication.

An accumulating number of studies have highlighted the importance of interpersonal neural synchronization (INS) between interlocutors in successful verbal communications. The opportunities for communication across different language contexts are rapidly expanding, thanks to the frequent interactions among people all over the world. However, whether the INS changes in different language contexts and how language choice affects the INS remain scarcely explored. The study recruited twenty pairs of participants to communicate in the first language (L1), second language (L2) and interlingual contex

Multi-Omic Investigations of a 17-19 Translocation Links MINK1 Disruption to Autism, Epilepsy and Osteoporosis.

Balanced structural variants, such as reciprocal translocations, are sometimes hard to detect with sequencing, especially when the breakpoints are located in repetitive or insufficiently mapped regions of the genome. In such cases, long-range information is required to resolve the rearrangement, identify disrupted genes and, in symptomatic carriers, pinpoint the disease-causing mechanisms. Here, we report an individual with autism, epilepsy and osteoporosis and a de novo balanced reciprocal translocation: t(17;19) (p13;p11). The genomic DNA was analyzed by short-, linked- and long-read genome

Axonal Conduction Delay Shapes the Precision of the Spatial Hearing in A Spiking Neural Network Model of Auditory Brainstem.

One method by which the mammalian sound localization pathway localizes sound sources is by analyzing the microsecond-level difference between the arrival times of a sound at the two ears. However, how the neural circuits in the auditory brainstem precisely integrate signals from the two ears, and what the underlying mechanisms are, remains to be understood. Recent studies have reported that variations of axon myelination in the auditory brainstem produces various axonal conduction velocities and sophisticated temporal dynamics, which have not been well characterized in most existing models of

Electrical Characterization of the Tongue and the Soft Palate Using Lumped-Element Model for Intraoral Neuromodulation.

Intraoral functions are results of complex and well-orchestrated sensorimotor loop operations, and therefore vulnerable to small functional or neural defects. To secure the vital intraoral functions, it is important to find a way to favorably intervene the intraoral sensorimotor loop operations. The tongue and the soft palate are heavily associated with intraoral sensorimotor loops, with their dense neural innervations and occupancy of intraoral space. Therefore, electrical stimulation onto the tongue and the soft palate has a great potential to solve the problems in the intraoral functions. H
