Automatic recognition of schizophrenia from brain-network features using graph convolutional neural network.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness that imposes considerable economic burden on families and society. However, its clinical diagnosis primarily relies on scales and doctors' clinical experience and lacks an objective and accurate diagnostic approach. In recent years, graph convolutional neural networks (GCN) have been used to assist in psychiatric diagnosis owing to their ability to learn spatial-association information. Therefore, this study proposes a schizophrenia automatic recognition model based on graph convolutional neural network. Herein, the resting-state electroencephalography

Monitoring Level of Hypnosis Using Stationary Wavelet Transform and Singular Value Decomposition Entropy With Feedforward Neural Network.

Classifying the patient's depth of anesthesia (LoH) level into a few distinct states may lead to inappropriate drug administration. To tackle the problem, this paper presents a robust and computationally efficient framework that predicts a continuous LoH index scale from 0-100 in addition to the LoH state. This paper proposes a novel approach for accurate LoH estimation based on Stationary Wavelet Transform (SWT) and fractal features. The deep learning model adopts an optimized temporal, fractal, and spectral feature set to identify the patient sedation level irrespective of age and the type o

Using CNN Saliency Maps and EEG Modulation Spectra for Improved and More Interpretable Machine Learning-Based Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis.

Biomarkers based on resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) signals have emerged as a promising tool in the study of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recently, a state-of-the-art biomarker was found based on visual inspection of power modulation spectrograms where three "patches" or regions from the modulation spectrogram were proposed and used for AD diagnostics. Here, we propose the use of deep neural networks, in particular convolutional neural networks (CNNs) combined with saliency maps, trained on power modulation spectrogram inputs to find optimal patches in a data-driven manner. Experiments

Identifying Disease of Interest With Deep Learning Using Diagnosis Code.

BACKGROUND: Autoencoder (AE) is one of the deep learning techniques that uses an artificial neural network to reconstruct its input data in the output layer. We constructed a novel supervised AE model and tested its performance in the prediction of a co-existence of the disease of interest only using diagnostic codes. METHODS: Diagnostic codes of one million randomly sampled patients listed in the Korean National Health Information Database in 2019 were used to train, validate, and test the prediction model. The first used AE solely for a feature engineering tool for an input of a classifier.

Neural-SEIR: A flexible data-driven framework for precise prediction of epidemic disease.

Accurately modeling and predicting epidemic diseases is crucial to prevent disease transmission and reduce mortality. Due to various unpredictable factors, including population migration, vaccination, control efforts, and seasonal fluctuations, traditional epidemic models that rely on prior knowledge of virus transmission mechanisms may not be sufficient to forecast complex epidemics like coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19). The application of traditional epidemiological models such as susceptible-exposed-infectious-recovered (SEIR) may face difficulties in accurately predicting such complex ep

Graph Convolution and Self-attention Enhanced CNN with Domain Adaptation for Multi-site COVID-19 Diagnosis.

In 2019, coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an acute disease that can rapidly develop into a very serious state. Therefore, it is of great significance to realize automatic COVID-19 diagnosis. However, due to the small difference in the characteristics of computed tomography (CT) between community acquire pneumonia (CP) and COVID-19, the existing model is unsuitable for the three-class classifications of healthy control, CP and COVID-19. The current model rarely optimizes the data from multiple centers. Therefore, we propose a diagnosis model for COVID-19 patients based on graph enhanced 3D con

Astrocytes as master modulators of neural networks: Synaptic functions and disease-associated dysfunction of astrocytes.

Astrocytes are the most abundant glial cell type in the central nervous system and are essential to the development, plasticity, and maintenance of neural circuits. Astrocytes are heterogeneous, with their diversity rooted in developmental programs modulated by the local brain environment. Astrocytes play integral roles in regulating and coordinating neural activity extending far beyond their metabolic support of neurons and other brain cell phenotypes. Both gray and white matter astrocytes occupy critical functional niches capable of modulating brain physiology on time scales slower than syna

FFMAVP: a new classifier based on feature fusion and multitask learning for identifying antiviral peptides and their subclasses.

Antiviral peptides (AVPs) are widely found in animals and plants, with high specificity and strong sensitivity to drug-resistant viruses. However, due to the great heterogeneity of different viruses, most of the AVPs have specific antiviral activities. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the specific activities of AVPs on virus types. Most existing studies only identify AVPs, with only a few studies identifying subclasses by training multiple binary classifiers. We develop a two-stage prediction tool named FFMAVP that can simultaneously predict AVPs and their subclasses. In the first stage,

Accurate detection of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation with certified-GAN and neural architecture search.

This paper presents a novel machine learning framework for detecting PxAF, a pathological characteristic of electrocardiogram (ECG) that can lead to fatal conditions such as heart attack. To enhance the learning process, the framework involves a generative adversarial network (GAN) along with a neural architecture search (NAS) in the data preparation and classifier optimization phases. The GAN is innovatively invoked to overcome the class imbalance of the training data by producing the synthetic ECG for PxAF class in a certified manner. The effect of the certified GAN is statistically validate

Classification of Motor Imagery EEG Signals Based on Data Augmentation and Convolutional Neural Networks.

In brain-computer interface (BCI) systems, motor imagery electroencephalography (MI-EEG) signals are commonly used to detect participant intent. Many factors, including low signal-to-noise ratios and few high-quality samples, make MI classification difficult. In order for BCI systems to function, MI-EEG signals must be studied. In pattern recognition and other fields, deep learning approaches have recently been successfully applied. In contrast, few effective deep learning algorithms have been applied to BCI systems, especially MI-based systems. In this paper, we address these problems from tw

Channel Increment Strategy-Based 1D Convolutional Neural Networks for Seizure Prediction Using Intracranial EEG.

The application of intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG) to predict seizures remains challenging. Although channel selection has been utilized in seizure prediction and detection studies, most of them focus on the combination with conventional machine learning methods. Thus, channel selection combined with deep learning methods can be further analyzed in the field of seizure prediction. Given this, in this work, a novel iEEG-based deep learning method of One-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Networks (1D-CNN) combined with channel increment strategy was proposed for the effective seizure pre

Molecular Assays Simulator to Unravel Predictors Hacking in Goal-Directed Molecular Generations.

Generative models are being increasingly used in drug discovery, very often coupled with absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) bioassays or quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models to optimize a given set of properties. The molecules proposed by these algorithms are often revealed to be false positives; that is, they are predicted to be active and turn out to be inactive after synthesis and testing, mostly due to overoptimization of the predicted scores, which leads to an actual decrease or stagnation of the real scores. This behavior is also known as the

Assessment of thermokinetic behaviour of tannery sludge in slow pyrolysis process through artificial neural network.

In the leather industry, tannery sludge is produced in large volume. This study investigated the thermal degradation behavior of tannery sludge using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The experiments were carried out in an inert atmosphere using nitrogen gas at varied heating rates of 5, 10, 20, and 40 °C/min in the temperature range of 30-900 °C. For the kinetic parameters calculation, three different models, Friedman, Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) and the Ozawa-Flynn-Wall (OFW), were employed. The average activation energy (Ea) obtained from Friedman, KAS, and the OFW methods were 130.9 kJ

Application of Neural Network in Predicting H2S from an Acid Gas Removal Unit (AGRU) with Different Compositions of Solvents.

The gas sweetening process removes hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in an acid gas removal unit (AGRU) to meet the gas sales' specification, known as sweet gas. Monitoring the concentration of H2S in sweet gas is crucial to avoid operational and environmental issues. This study shows the capability of artificial neural networks (ANN) to predict the concentration of H2S in sweet gas. The concentration of N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) and Piperazine (PZ), temperature and pressure as inputs, and the concentration of H2S in sweet gas as outputs have been used to create the ANN network. Two distinct backprop

A survey on cancer detection via convolutional neural networks: Current challenges and future directions.

Cancer is a condition in which abnormal cells uncontrollably split and damage the body tissues. Hence, detecting cancer at an early stage is highly essential. Currently, medical images play an indispensable role in detecting various cancers; however, manual interpretation of these images by radiologists is observer-dependent, time-consuming, and tedious. An automatic decision-making process is thus an essential need for cancer detection and diagnosis. This paper presents a comprehensive survey on automated cancer detection in various human body organs, namely, the breast, lung, liver, prostate

E-TBNet: Light Deep Neural Network for Automatic Detection of Tuberculosis with X-ray DR Imaging.

Currently, the tuberculosis (TB) detection model based on chest X-ray images has the problem of excessive reliance on hardware computing resources, high equipment performance requirements, and being harder to deploy in low-cost personal computer and embedded devices. An efficient tuberculosis detection model is proposed to achieve accurate, efficient, and stable tuberculosis screening on devices with lower hardware levels. Due to the particularity of the chest X-ray images of TB patients, there are fewer labeled data, and the deep neural network model is difficult to fully train. We first anal
