Motor cortex excitability changes following a lesion in the posterior columns of the cervical spinal cord.

We used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to explore if an impairment of central sensory function produced by an isolated lesion in the cervical posterior white columns would change motor cortex excitability. Cortical silent period duration was prolonged when compared with the control subjects, while central motor conduction and motor thresholds were in the normal limits. We first demonstrate that the involvement of the ascending proprioceptive sensory pathways in spinal cord diseases may have direct consequences on the activity of intracortical inhibitory interneuronal circuits. These f

Innervation of Extrahepatic Biliary Tract, With Special Reference to the Direct Bidirectional Neural Connections of the Gall Bladder, Sphincter of Oddi and Duodenum in Suncus murinus, in Whole-Mount Immunohistochemical Study.

Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction is one of the most important symptoms in post-cholecystectomy syndrome. Using either electrical or mechanical stimulation and retrogradely transported neuronal dyes, it has been demonstrated that there are direct neural pathways connecting gall bladder and the sphincter of Oddi in the Australian opossum and the golden hamster. In the present study, we employed whole-mount immunohistochemistry staining to observe and verify that there are two different plexuses of the extrahepatic biliary tract in Suncus murinus. One, named Pathway One, showed a fine, irregular but…

Neural regulation of tumor immunity: emerging opportunities to enhance cancer immunotherapy.

The nervous system is a key regulator of cancer immunity, influencing tumor development and treatment response through neuroimmune interactions. Both peripheral and central circuits transmit neural signals that directly influence immune cell recruitment, activation, and effector function within the tumor microenvironment. Evidences indicate that sympathetic, parasympathetic, sensory neurons, and glial cells actively reshape the immune landscape through neurotransmitters and neuromodulators. Central neural circuits, such as catecholaminergic and stress-responsive pathways, further integrate psy

The Gut-Brain Axis in Comorbidity of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Anxiety/Depression: Mechanisms, Controversies, and Future Directions.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and IBD unclassified (IBD-U), frequently cooccurs with anxiety and depression, a comorbid pattern that severely impairs patients' quality of life and has thus attracted increasing attention in clinical practice. The gut-brain axis (GBA)-an intricate bidirectional communication network encompassing neural, immune, endocrine, and microbial pathways-serves as a key framework for unraveling the biological underpinnings of this comorbidity. This review systematically synthesizes existing literature to dissect

Hepatic interoception in health and disease.

The liver is a large organ with crucial functions in metabolism and immune defense, as well as blood homeostasis and detoxification, and it is clearly in bidirectional communication with the brain and rest of the body via both neural and humoral pathways. A host of neural sensory mechanisms have been proposed, but in contrast to the gut-brain axis, details for both the exact site and molecular signaling steps of their peripheral transduction mechanisms are generally lacking. Similarly, knowledge about function-specific sensory and motor components of both vagal and spinal access pathways to th

High-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation promotes neural stem cell proliferation after ischemic stroke.

JOURNAL/nrgr/04.03/01300535-202408000-00031/figure1/v/2023-12-16T180322Z/r/image-tiff Proliferation of neural stem cells is crucial for promoting neuronal regeneration and repairing cerebral infarction damage. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has recently emerged as a tool for inducing endogenous neural stem cell regeneration, but its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we found that repetitive TMS effectively promotes the proliferation of oxygen-glucose deprived neural stem cells. Additionally, repetitive TMS reduced the volume of cerebral infarction in a rat model of

Modelling anxiety disorders following chemical exposures.

The effects of kindling and inverse benzodiazepine receptor agonist beta-carbolines on animal models of anxiety are briefly reviewed in relation to affective disorder associated with chemical exposure. Recent experimental results are described. In the present study, cats were given the inverse benzodiazepine receptor agonist, FG-7142, a powerful anxiogenic compound in humans and animals. Neural transmission in pathways involved in defensive behavior in the cat was monitored using evoked potential techniques. Change in these pathways was related to behavioral changes induced by the drug. It was

Synaptic wiring motifs in posterior parietal cortex support decision-making.

The posterior parietal cortex exhibits choice-selective activity during perceptual decision-making tasks1-10. However, it is not known how this selective activity arises from the underlying synaptic connectivity. Here we combined virtual-reality behaviour, two-photon calcium imaging, high-throughput electron microscopy and circuit modelling to analyse how synaptic connectivity between neurons in the posterior parietal cortex relates to their selective activity. We found that excitatory pyramidal neurons preferentially target inhibitory interneurons with the same selectivity. In turn, inhibitor

A multi-network model of Parkinson's disease tremor: exploring the finger-dimmer-switch theory and role of dopamine in thalamic self-inhibition.

Background. Tremor is a cardinal symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) that manifests itself through complex oscillatory activity across multiple neuronal populations. According to the finger-dimmer-switch (FDS) theory, tremor is triggered by transient pathological activity in the basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical (BTC) network (the finger) and transitions into an oscillatory form within the inner circuitry of the thalamus (the switch). The cerebello-thalamo-cortical (CTC) network (the dimmer) is then involved in sustaining and amplifying tremor amplitude. In this study, we aimed to investigate the

Model for cascading failures in functional networks: application to epileptic patients with generalized tonic-clonic seizures.

The dynamic process of epilepsy is modeled as a cascading failure model in functional networks derived from graph theory. The aim is to test whether cascading failure identified from functional magnetic resonance imaging data could simulate epileptic discharges in 18 subjects with generalized tonic-clonic seizure and 17 demographically matched healthy controls. A cascading failure model was used to simulate the neural networks underlying generalized tonic-clonic seizure and healthy controls by stimulation of the node with the greatest number of connections. Results showed that the efficiency o

A novel excitatory network for the control of breathing.

Breathing must be tightly coordinated with other behaviours such as vocalization, swallowing, and coughing. These behaviours occur after inspiration, during a respiratory phase termed postinspiration. Failure to coordinate postinspiration with inspiration can result in aspiration pneumonia, the leading cause of death in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, dementia, and other neurodegenerative diseases. Here we describe an excitatory network that generates the neuronal correlate of postinspiratory activity in mice. Glutamatergic-cholinergic neurons form the basis of this network, and GABA

Modeling fast stimulus-response association learning along the occipito-parieto-frontal pathway following rule instructions.

On the basis of instructions, humans are able to set up associations between sensory and motor areas of the brain separated by several neuronal relays, within a few seconds. This paper proposes a model of fast learning along the dorsal pathway, from primary visual areas to pre-motor cortex. A new synaptic learning rule is proposed where synaptic efficacies converge rapidly toward a specific value determined by the number of active inputs of a neuron, respecting a principle of resource limitation in terms of total synaptic input efficacy available to a neuron. The efficacies are stable with reg

Neural network model for completing occluded contours.

When some parts of a pattern are occluded by other objects, the visual system can often estimate the shape of occluded contours from visible parts of the contours. This paper proposes a neural network model capable of such function, which is called amodal completion. The model is a hierarchical multi-layered network that has bottom-up and top-down signal paths. It contains cells of area V1, which respond selectively to edges of a particular orientation, and cells of area V2, which respond selectively to a particular angle of bend. Using the responses of bend-extracting cells, the model predict

Independent development of sensory and motor innervation patterns in embryonic chick hindlimbs.

Previous studies suggest that sensory axon outgrowth is guided by motoneurons, which are specified to innervate particular target muscles. Here we present evidence that questions this conclusion. We have used a new approach to assess the pathfinding abilities of bona fide sensory neurons, first by eliminating motoneurons after neural crest cells have coalesced into dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and second by challenging sensory neurons to innervate muscles in a novel environment created by shifting a limb bud rostrally. The resulting sensory innervation patterns mapped with the lipophilic dyes DiI

Coma associated with flaccidity produced by fluid-percussion concussion in the cat. II: Contribution of activity in the pontine inhibitory system.

In the preceding paper we reported that concussive levels of fluid-percussion head injury can produce transient flaccidity of postural muscles associated with other indices of coma. This reversible coma associated with flaccidity follows an initial period of generalized areflexia and occurs in the absence of EEG slow waves. The present study investigated the physiological mechanisms underlying the flaccidity following concussive head injury be recording dorsal and ventral root potentials of the spinal cord. Studies indicated that, during the initial period of generalized areflexia, afferent in

Neuronal correlates of motion-defined shape perception in primate dorsal and ventral streams.

Human and non-human primates can readily perceive the shape of objects using visual motion. Classically, shape, and motion are considered to be separately processed via ventral and dorsal cortical pathways, respectively. However, many lines of anatomical and physiological evidence have indicated that these two pathways are likely to be interconnected at some stage. For motion-defined shape perception, these two pathways should interact with each other because the ventral pathway must utilize motion, which the dorsal pathway processes, to extract shape signal. However, it is unknown how interac

Molecular signaling directing neural plate border formation.

During embryonic development, the vertebrate embryonic epiblast is divided into two parts including neural and superficial ectoderm. The neural plate border (NPB) is a narrow transitional area which locates between these parts and contains multipotent progenitor cells. Despite its small size, the cellular heterogeneity in this region produces specific differentiated cells. Signaling pathways, transcription factors, and the expression/repression of certain genes are directly involved in these differentiation processes. Different factors such as the Wnt signaling cascade, fibroblast growth facto
