Second coordination sphere controls structural flexibility of blue copper protein: A basis for entatic state formation.

Metalloproteins exhibit remarkable reactivity through the precise tuning of metal active sites embedded in the protein matrix. The concepts of the entatic state and rack-induced bonding describe how protein-imposed constraints optimize the metal-coordination structure for physiological functions. Blue copper proteins (BCPs) are prime examples of these concepts, where the protein modulates the balance between structural constraints (rigidity/flexibility) and Jahn-Teller distortion. However, the quantitative evaluation of protein flexibility and its interplay with the second coordination sphere

Bright 2D Polar Perovskite Scintillator with Ultrafast Decay by Suppressing Free Carrier Recombination.

High light yield and ultrafast decay time are highly demanded for scintillators in sensitive, rapid radiation detection and imaging, but both properties can hardly coexist in a scintillator so far. Herein, we report a design principle for spontaneous polarization-enhanced scintillation in 2D organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites. As anticipated, the (4-aminomethyl-1-cyclohexanecarboxylate)2PbBr4 (APB) perovskite displays high light yield up to 19 660 photons/MeV and a lifetime of 0.90 ns. Combining the experimental and computational results, we demonstrate that enhancement of dielectric screeni

The Myelin Sheath as a Multilamellar Electromechanical System: Bilayer Stack Analogs, Energy Buffering, and Biological Memory.

The myelin sheath has traditionally been viewed as a passive electrical insulator that accelerates nerve impulse propagation. Recent experimental studies, however, indicate that myelin is a dynamic biological material whose structure and hydration state adapt to neuronal activity, metabolic conditions, and environmental perturbations. Building on these observations, we propose a conceptual framework that treats myelin as an adaptive electromechanical multilamellar interface, in which coupled lipid bilayers, hydration layers, and interlayer interactions influence energy dissipation, structural

The changeable solution structures of the 197 kDa de-O-acetyl capsular polysialic acid of Neisseria C.

The structures of the de-O-acylated form of α2→9 polysialic acid of Neisseria C (Men C) in heavy water with pD 7.4 and 4.4 and in the absence and presence of Ca2+ have been measured with small angle neutron scattering (SANS) where different solution conditions cause large structural changes in the polysaccharide. The nominal molecular mass of material used is 197 kDa. A number of possible structures can fit the data under the varied conditions, but straightforward chemical arguments lead to the following results. In the absence of calcium, each molecule forms a bundle of parallel polymer chain

Phonons Reflect Dynamic Spin-State Order in LaCoO_{3}.

We investigate lattice dynamics in LaCoO_{3} using inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering over T=2-650  K, spanning the spin-state crossover at T_{1}≈100  K and the insulator-metal transition at T_{2}≈550  K. Comparison with quasiharmonic ab initio lattice-dynamical calculations helps reveal anomalous softening of a≈10-meV oxygen phonon, confined to the temperature interval T_{1}≤T≤T_{2} and localized in momentum space at q_{SSO}=(½,½,½)_{c}. This wave vector is characteristic of the spin-state-ordering pattern originally proposed by Goodenough [An interpretation of the magnetic properties of

Plasma membrane impacts of particulate matter on the blood-brain barrier.

The potential for inhaled environmental particulate matter (PM) to cause neuronal effects is a growing concern, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. There are two potential exposure routes via transport though the olfactory nerve transport and direct interaction of the circulating PM with the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This study investigated the plausible mechanism by which PM, once in circulation, could cross BBB's via the endotheliocytes, specifically focusing on the role of the plasma membrane. An in vitro BBB model (hCMEC/D3 cells) was exposed to ambient London PM (PM10, PM2.5) a

Massive Dirac magnons in the three-dimensional honeycomb magnetic oxide [Formula: see text].

Two dimensional honeycomb ferromagnets host massless Dirac magnons which are a bosonic analogue of Dirac fermions in graphene. The Dirac magnons may become massive and topological when the time reversal symmetry breaks and an energy gap opens up at the Dirac point, which was experimentally observed in [Formula: see text]-based van der Waals magnets. Here, we investigate the spin wave excitations in the 3d magnetic oxide [Formula: see text] with [Formula: see text] electrons ([Formula: see text]). Using inelastic neutron scattering, we observe two magnon bands separated by a 1.2-meV gap at the

Spin correlations in the nematic quantum disordered state of FeSe.

The quantum-disordered state in FeSe, intertwined with superconductivity and nematicity, has been a research focus in iron-based superconductors. However, the intrinsic spin excitations across the entire Brillouin zone in detwinned FeSe, crucial for understanding its magnetism and superconductivity, have remained unresolved. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we reveal that stripe spin excitations (Q = (1, 0)/(0, 1)) exhibit the C2 symmetry, while Néel spin excitations (Q = (1, 1)) retain C4 symmetry within the nematic state. Temperature-dependent differences between Q = (1, 0) and (0, 1) spi

Covalent Stabilization of the Iridium-Containing Oxyhydrides Sr2Mn0.5Ir0.5O3.25H0.75 and Sr2Mn0.5Ir0.5O2.66H1.33.

Reaction between Sr2Mn0.5Ir0.5O4 and CaH2 or LiH yields the iridium-containing oxyhydride phases Sr2Mn0.5Ir0.5O3.25H0.75 or Sr2Mn0.5Ir0.5O2.66H1.33, respectively. Analysis of Mn K-edge XANES data indicate the presence of Ir3+ centers in these oxyhydride phases, whose low-spin d6 configuration is consistent with the "covalent stabilization" of the metastable oxyhydride phases, as seen previously in analogous ruthenium and rhodium containing materials. Neutron powder diffraction data indicate the hydride ions are located exclusively within the "equatorial" anion sites of Sr2Mn0.5Ir0.5O3.25H0.75.

Giant Splitting of the Hydrogen Rotational Eigenenergies in the C_{2} Filled Ice.

Hydrogen hydrates exhibit a rich phase diagram influenced by both pressure and temperature, with the so-called C_{2} phase emerging prominently above 2.5 GPa. In this phase, hydrogen molecules are densely packed within a cubic icelike lattice and the interaction with the surrounding water molecules profoundly affects their quantum rotational dynamics. Herein, we delve into this intricate interplay by directly solving the Schrödinger's equation for a quantum H_{2} rotor in the C_{2} crystal field at finite temperature, generated through density functional theory. Our calculations reveal a giant

Orientational Disorder of Alcohol Molecules at Their Solution Surfaces in Low Concentration Range: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of short-chain alcohols (methanol, ethanol, and 1-propanol) in solution were carried out to examine the orientational disordering (randomizing) of alcohol molecules at the surface under diluted conditions. Recent vibrational sum frequency generation (VSFG) spectroscopy, combined with photoelectron spectroscopy, has successfully measured the disordering structure at low concentrations. The present MD simulations accurately reproduce this observation for the first time. To ensure reliable results through MD simulations, several widely used force field models f

Combining branched copolymers with additives generates stable thermoresponsive emulsions with in situ gelation upon exposure to body temperature.

Branched copolymer surfactants (BCS) containing thermoresponsive polymer components, hydrophilic components, and hydrophobic termini allow the formation of emulsions which switch from liquid at room temperature to a gel state upon heating. These materials have great potential as in situ gel-forming dosage forms for administration to external and internal body sites, where the emulsion system also allows effective solubilisation of a range of drugs with different chemistries. These systems have been reported previously, however there are many challenges to translation into pharmaceutical excipi

Strong structuring arising from weak cooperative O-H···π and C-H···O hydrogen bonding in benzene-methanol solution.

Weak hydrogen bonds, such as O-H···π and C-H···O, are thought to direct biochemical assembly, molecular recognition, and chemical selectivity but are seldom observed in solution. We have used neutron diffraction combined with H/D isotopic substitution to obtain a detailed spatial and orientational picture of the structure of benzene-methanol mixtures. Our analysis reveals that methanol fully solvates and surrounds each benzene molecule. The expected O-H···π interaction is highly localised and directional, with the methanol hydroxyl bond aligned normal to the aromatic plane and the hydrogen at

Preferred Spin Excitations in the Bilayer Iron-Based Superconductor CaK(Fe_{0.96}Ni_{0.04})_{4}As_{4} with Spin-Vortex Crystal Order.

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is a key to understand the magnetically driven superconductivity in iron-based superconductors, where both local and itinerant electrons are present and the orbital angular momentum is not completely quenched. Here, we report a neutron scattering study on the bilayer compound CaK(Fe_{0.96}Ni_{0.04})_{4}As_{4} with superconductivity coexisting with a noncollinear spin-vortex crystal magnetic order that preserves the tetragonal symmetry of the Fe-Fe plane. In the superconducting state, two spin resonance modes with odd and even L symmetries due to the bilayer coupling a

Spin fluctuations in the 112-type iron-based superconductor Ca0.82La0.18Fe0.96Ni0.04As2.

How does tuning the van der Waals bonding strength affect adsorbate structure?

Organic molecular thin-films are employed for manufacturing a wide variety of electronic devices, including memory devices and transistors. A precise description of the atomic-scale interactions in aromatic carbon systems is of paramount importance for the design of organic thin-films and carbon-based nanomaterials. Here we investigate the binding and structure of pyrazine on graphite with neutron diffraction and spin-echo measurements. Diffraction data of the ordered phase of deuterated pyrazine, (C4D4N2), adsorbed on the graphite (0001) basal plane surface are compared to scattering simulati

First-principles study of the crystal and magnetic structures of multiferroic Cu2OCl2.

Recently, the discovery of multiferroicity in pyrochlore-like compound Cu2OCl2has generated significant interest, and several studies have been performed in this area. This transition metal oxychloride is unique because the divalent copper atoms create anS=1/2correlated insulator and the pyrochlore lattice tends to frustrate spins. From neutron powder diffraction measurements, an incommensurate magnetic order of the ordering vectorq=(0.827,0,0)emerges below the Néel temperature of 70 K. At this temperature or slightly above, ferroelectricity (FE) or antiferroelectricity, accompanying a lattice

Adsorption of Sulfur Dioxide in Cu(II)-Carboxylate Framework Materials: The Role of Ligand Functionalization and Open Metal Sites.

The development of efficient sorbent materials for sulfur dioxide (SO2) is of key industrial interest. However, due to the corrosive nature of SO2, conventional porous materials often exhibit poor reversibility and limited uptake toward SO2 sorption. Here, we report high adsorption of SO2 in a series of Cu(II)-carboxylate-based metal-organic framework materials. We describe the impact of ligand functionalization and open metal sites on the uptake and reversibility of SO2 adsorption. Specifically, MFM-101 and MFM-190(F) show fully reversible SO2 adsorption with remarkable capacities of 18.7 and
