Nevus lipomatosus cutaneous superficialis (NLCS) is a rare idiopathic cutaneous hamartoma characterized by ectopic clusters of mature adipose tissues in dermis. It is classified into two types. Classical type presenting as multiple lesions with onset at birth or within third decade of life and solitary type with onset between third to sixth decade of life. Here we present a case of 45 years female with adult onset, asymptomatic, grouped, skin colored, soft sessile growth in zosteriform pattern on left buttock. We here intend to report rare case of classical Nevus Lipomatosus Cutaneous Superfic…

Basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS) is an autosomal dominant skin disorder characterized by multiple basal cell nevi. Patients with BCNS tend to develop basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and frequently show skeletal abnormalities. Most cases of BCNS are caused by mutations in patched 1 (PTCH1). PTCH1 encodes a transmembrane receptor protein for the secreted molecule sonic hedgehog, which plays a key role in the development of animals ranging from insects to mammals. We analyzed two Japanese BCNS patients from two independent families. Both of our patients had multiple jaw keratocysts. In one patient, th…

Pediatric melanomas are uncommon and sometimes arise in the background of giant congenital melanocytic nevus (GCMN). A 1-year-old girl was born with GCMN affecting her left half of the face and smaller nodules affecting trunk, hands, and feet. She developed an ulcerated lesion on the left temporoparietal scalp. The lesion showed features of GCMN along with large nests of a tumor composed of round cells with a vesicular nucleus, prominent nucleolus, plentiful mitoses, and areas of necrosis. Immunostaining for desmin, LCA, CD 20, CD 34, CD 99, BCL-2, and FLI1 was negative. Tumor cells showed imm…

BACKGROUND: Primary melanocytic neoplasms (PMNs) are rare neoplasms, especially within the central nervous system. Meningeal melanocytomas, a subtype of PMN, are even rarer. Nevus of Ota results from the incomplete migration of melanocytes from the neural crest. Synchronous nevus of Ota and meningeal melanocytoma are infrequently encountered in clinical practice.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and elucidate 12 cases of synchronous meningeal melanocytoma and nevus of Ota, thereby improving the understanding of the relationship between these 2 diseases.
METHODS: We reviewed cases and searched the Engl…

PURPOSE: To report a case of "posterior scleral melanocytosis," a pigmented lesion of the posterior sclera that clinically resembles a flat choroidal nevus.
METHODS: Case report of a patient with posterior scleral melanocytosis. Multimodal imaging, including swept source optical coherence tomography, was used to demonstrate the scleral location of the pigmented lesion and to distinguish its features from a typical choroidal nevus present in the same eye.
RESULTS: An 86-year-old woman was seen for regular follow-up for neovascular age-related macular degeneration in her right eye and 2 pigmen…

A 37-year-old woman underwent excision of a congenital melanocytic nevus of the right lower eyelid margin for cosmetic reasons. She suffered from a severe dry eye syndrome which was partially alleviated with various topical eye drops. Histopathology of the excised tissue displayed flecks of calcium that were present within the immediate subepithelial conjunctival fibrous tissue but not the nevocytes or the cutaneous surface. Unlike calcinosis cutis, wherein calcium is deposited within the cutaneous dermis, calcification of the conjunctival substantia propria is rare and may be related to the d…

The co-existence of papular nevus spilus (PNS) and ipsilateral extracutaneous abnormalities involving peripheral nerves of the skin or muscles was originally described as "speckled lentiginous nevus syndrome". To avoid confusion with macular nevus spilus, the condition was recently re-named "papular nevus spilus syndrome". In addition to 14 published cases, we identified six new cases via a search of the worldwide literature. New diagnostic criteria are suggested: (1) presence of a PNS; (2) presence of a neurological or skeletal abnormality which is usually ipsilateral to the nevus; and (3) ab…

The clinical diagnostic criteria for Proteus syndrome were defined before the discovery of the AKT1 c.49G>A; p.(Glu17Lys) causal variant and used a combination of general and specific phenotypic attributes that could be combined to make a clinical diagnosis. The most heavily weighted specific criterion was the cerebriform connective tissue nevus (CCTN). Here, we describe two individuals with connective tissue nevi (CTNs) and some general attributes of Proteus syndrome who were found to have mosaic PIK3CA variants. CTNs on the soles of individuals with PIK3CA-related overgrowth typically exhibi…

Nevus lipomatosus cutaneous superficialis (NLCS) is an idiopathic hamartomatous condition characterized by the presence of mature adipose tissue in the dermis. We report a case of NLCS initially misdiagnosed as condyloma acuminata in a 14-year-old boy. This case highlights classic clinical and histologic features of NLCS. The case presented here underscores the need for a high degree of clinical suspicion in diagnosing NLCS and in differentiating benign anogenital lesions from sexually transmitted conditions to avoid unnecessary work-up and undue emotional stress.

Nevus of Ota is a blue, hyperpigmented, benign dermatosis of the skin and mucosae that most often occurs unilaterally in the distribution of the ophthalmic (V1) and maxillary (V2) branches of the trigeminal nerve. Although uncommon, association with malignant melanoma is a complication that must be considered in the evaluation of patients with nevus of Ota. Mutations in the GNAQ and BAP1 genes in patients with nevus of Ota place them at higher risk for malignant melanoma and metastasis. We report the case of a 29-year-old woman with a long-standing history of nevus of Ota who presented acutely…

Verrucous nevus is a benign tumor showing a linear pattern on Blaschko lines. It is caused by mosaic mutations of the receptor FGFR3 gene. It manifests as an aesthetic disfigurement, but individuals even experience functional complications due to itchiness. Lesions may be localized or extended (giant). In our context, the scarcity of specialized centers in dermatology is a cause of diagnostic delay inducing the patient to undertake unsuitable therapies responsible for infectious or degenerative complications. We report the case of a 15-year old girl with a history of keratotic papules showing …

Cellular blue nevus is an uncommon neoplasm in the conjunctiva. Here we present an unusual case of a cellular blue nevus that clinically resembled conjunctival melanoma. A 29-year-old Chinese male was found to have a giant pigmented lesion of the conjunctiva around the limbal area of right eye from birth. Excisional biopsy with no-touch technique, lamellar corneal transplantation, amniotic membrane transplantation and adjuvant cryotherapy were performed. Histopathology revealed a nodular, well-defined tumor, which was composed of heavily pigmented dendritic cells and less pigmented spindle cel…

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo and halo nevus are two common T-cell-mediated skin disorders. Although autoimmunity has been suggested to be involved in both diseases, the relationship between vitiligo and halo nevus is not fully understood.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study was to investigate whether vitiligo and halo nevus share the same immunological and oxidative stress response.
METHODS: Infiltrations of T cells, and expressions of chemokine receptors (CXCR3, CCR4, CCR5) and cytotoxic markers (Granzyme B, Perforin) in the lesions of vitiligo and halo nevus were examined by immunohistochemist…

BACKGROUND: Becker's nevus (BN) presents as a hairy patch or plaque with or without proliferation of the dermal smooth muscles. BN has been described as acquired as found in a similar entity, congenital smooth muscle hamartoma (CSMH). This study was aimed at evaluating the clinicopathological aspects of BN in Korean cases in differential diagnosis with CSMH.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 103 patients histopathologically diagnosed as having BN or CSMH. The cases included 40 cases diagnosed with BN or CSMH before the age of 10 years who had clinical monitoring and a second skin…
