The strategy for treating bladder cancer (BC) depends on whether there is muscle invasion or not, with the latter mostly treated with intravesical therapy, such as with bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG). However, BCG treatment is unsuccessful in 70% of patients, who are then subjected to radical cystectomy. Although immune-checkpoint inhibitors have been approved as a second-line therapy for a subset of BC patients, these have failed to meet primary endpoints in clinical trials. Oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains a public health problem in many countries, especially in emerging and developing countries. Epidemiology of OSCC is characterized by marked differences in prevalence between countries/regions/ethnical groups. The highest incidence in the world is reached by populations living in specific areas of northwestern Xinjiang, China where age-adjusted mortality may reach 150 of 100 000. In fact, there are also marked differences among the various geographical areas and the various ethnic groups within the region, which suggests specific risk factors.

Diallyl sulfide (DAS) is a flavor compound derived from garlic and is sequentially converted to diallyl sulfoxide (DASO) and diallyl sulfone (DASO(2)) by cytochrome P(450) 2E1 (CYP2E1). These compounds have been shown to reduce the incidence of a multitude of chemically induced tumors in animal models.
