[Supporting caregivers in the age of AI: the role of an ethical digital companion].

In psychiatry, mental exhaustion among caregivers stems from exposure to suffering, suicide risk, and violence, as well as organizational constraints. Despite numerous support systems, teams describe the services available as unclear and difficult to access. After describing the gray area of exhaustion, between individual experience, institutional norms, and demands for resilience, guidelines for framing digital or artificial intelligence projects presented as support for well-being can be proposed. An action plan by the Strategic Partners Initiative for Data and Digital Health, based on opera

Nurse-to-nurse shift handoffs on medical-surgical units: A process within the flow of nursing care.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To qualitatively investigate the medical-surgical nurse shift handoff as a process within the workflow of the exchanging nurses. Specifically, this study sought to identify the ideal handoff, ways the handoff deviated from ideal, and subsequent effect on nursing care. BACKGROUND: The functions as well as information content of the handoff have been studied. However, typical studies look at the handoff as an isolated activity utilising nurse perceptions as the primary measure of quality. DESIGN: Semi-structured focus groups were conducted to discuss nurses' perspectives o

Living libraries: Nurse integration in interprofessional homeless health care team.

BACKGROUND: Despite an increase in national health care service utilization, entry into the health care system remains inequitable. This disparity in health care access disproportionately affects those experiencing homelessness. Because the homeless population faces significant financial and nonfinancial barriers, health care system engagement with these individuals must be reconsidered. OBJECTIVE: This article will describe the piloting of an interprofessional model within an urban library to address barriers to health care access that homeless individuals face. DESIGN: The library's unique

Innovative Mental Health Clinical Placement: Developing Nurses' Relationship Skills.

Engagement in clinical placements is mandatory for all pre-registration nursing programs. Although clinical placements can be valuable, recent literature illustrates that placements within a mental health setting can vary in their educational development. The aim of the current study was to examine the potential learning benefit of 20 pre-registration nursing students in an innovative, university-accredited mental health clinical placement called Recovery Camp. Recovery Camp is a 5-day immersive clinical placement, grounded in therapeutic recreation, which involves all participants engaging in

Application of Predictive Analytics in Pregnancy, Birth, and Postpartum Nursing Care.

Predictive analytics has emerged as a promising approach for improving reproductive health care and patient outcomes. During pregnancy and birth, the ability to accurately predict risks and complications could enable earlier interventions and reduce adverse events. However, there are challenges and ethical considerations for implementing predictive models in perinatal care settings. We introduce major concepts in predictive analytics and describe application of predictive modeling to perinatal care topics such as fertility, preeclampsia, labor onset, vaginal birth after cesarean, uterine ruptu

Oral health in assisted living communities: A hidden driver of systemic disease.

Oral health is an important part of overall health, but it is often overlooked in older adults, especially those in memory care and skilled nursing communities. This paper discusses oral health problems in assisted living, how they are connected to serious health conditions, and a few practical steps one can take to mitigate or even prevent these conditions. Older adults are more likely to develop oral diseases due to changes in hygiene habits, normal aging, age-related medical conditions, and reliance on caregivers for daily oral hygiene. In many communities, limited time, lack of training, a

A Pilot Study to Test the Feasibility of a Home Mobility Monitoring System in Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

Technology enables home-based personalized care through continuous, automated, real-time monitoring of a participant's health condition and remote communication between health care providers and participants. Technology has been implemented in a variety of nursing practices. However, little is known about the use of home mobility monitoring systems in visiting nursing practice. Therefore, the current study tested the feasibility of a home mobility monitoring system as a supportive tool for monitoring daily activities in community-dwelling older adults. Daily mobility data were collected for 15

Noninvasive screening for risk factors of type 2 diabetes in young, rural, caucasian children.

School nurses play an important role in identifying students who are at risk for Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Few studies have screened Caucasian students, and none have targeted rural, low-income, elementary children. The five noninvasive risk factors used for this study were family history, high body mass index (BMI) for age/sex, racial/ethnic background, hypertension, and acanthosis nigricans. Two thirds of those screened (n = 299) had at least one of the five risk factors for T2DM. Seventeen students (5.6% of those screened) had three or more of the five risk factors and were considere

Development of a supportive-educative nursing model based on health promotion for independent wound care in diabetic foot ulcer patients: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers are a chronic complications of diabetes associated with substantial morbidity, amputation risk, and reduced quality of life. Promoting the patients' capacity for independent wound care is a key component of long-term management. Although health promotion and supportive-educative nursing approaches are widely advocated in nursing, empirically informed models specifically addressing independent wound care in diabetic foot ulcer patients remain limited, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries. OBJECTIVE: To develop a supportive-educative nursing mo

Hepatitis C treatment as prevention in the prison setting: Assessments of acceptability of treatment scale up efforts by prison correctional and health personnel.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C (HCV) infection is prevalent in the prison setting, with sharing of unsterile injecting equipment the most common mode of transmission in high income countries. Mathematical modelling suggests that HCV treatment scale-up could prevent onward transmission, known as treatment as prevention. Direct-acting antivirals have enabled rapid scale up of HCV treatment, underpinning the first clinical trial of treatment as prevention in the prison setting. The Surveillance and Treatment of Prisoners with hepatitis C (SToP-C) study was carried out in four correctional centres in New

Negative/positive home-based caregiving appraisals by informal carers of the elderly in Japan.

AIM: This study aimed to determine factors associated with negative/positive home-based caregiving appraisals by informal carers of older people in Japan to consider which family carers' community health nurses should focus on. BACKGROUND: Because of the increasing older population in Japan, those needing a high level of care have become more dependent on informal carers. Carers' health is an important aspect of caregiving. Community health nurses play an important role in assessing carers' health, and carer appraisals, that is, how carers perceive their caregiving work, may help them better

Using genomic epidemiology to infer transmission dynamics in selected skilled nursing facility COVID-19 Outbreaks-Los Angeles County, February 2023-March 2024.

To evaluate mandated infection control measures to reduce SARS-CoV-2 introduction and transmission in skilled nursing facilities, we characterized outbreak duration by the number of lineages identified. Median outbreak duration among outbreaks with multiple lineages identified was 35 days compared with 27 days among outbreaks with a single lineage identified. Our results support implementation of public health policies to reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 introduction into skilled nursing facilities, especially during periods of elevated community transmission.

Bedbugs: an equal opportunist and cosmopolitan creature.

Currently there is a rise in bedbugs seen in schools. The wingless, blood-sucking insects can arrive at school via student book bags, student clothing, or other personal items. If a student presents in the health office with a bite mark, the school nurse will need to differentiate between a bedbug bite and other insect bites, such as fleas, spiders, and scabies in order to provide the most accurate and appropriate intervention measures. This article will further provide school nurses with information about the etiology of the bedbug, mode of transmission, and eradication options for the school
