Validity and Reliability Study of the Nursing Informatics Competency Assessment Tool.

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: The rapid development of information and communication technologies has rendered informatics competencies of health care professionals critical in the digital transformation process. Nurses, who constitute a substantial proportion of the health care workforce, are expected to develop nursing informatics competencies. These competencies are crucial for effective adaptation to digital health care environments and for ensuring the delivery of safe care. Therefore, it is important that informatics competencies are assessed with practical and valid tools. The results of such a

Narrative nursing to address negative emotions, body image disturbance, and satisfaction in patients after axillary odor surgery: a sequential explanatory mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Patients commonly experience negative emotions and body image disturbance following axillary odor surgery, while conventional nursing care often fails to adequately address their psychological needs. Narrative nursing, as a humanistic care model, offers a novel perspective for this issue. METHODS: A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was employed. In the quantitative phase, 120 post-operative axillary odor patients were randomly assigned to either an intervention group or a control group. Assessments were conducted using the SAS, SDS, BIRS and a satisfaction questionnaire

Nursing Management of Postoperative Lumbar Spinal Canal Stenosis.

Spinal stenosis most commonly occurs at L4-5, with 91% of patients experiencing nerve compression at this location. It results from a degenerative process that begins in the intervertebral disc, as viable cell counts, water, and proteoglycan content decrease in the nucleus pulposus. The disc height decreases as the nucleolus pulposus degenerates and the annulus fibrosus bulges. Stenosis is generally classified by descriptive elements, such as etiology (i.e., degenerative or congenital), location (i.e., central, lateral recess, foraminal, or extraforaminal), and severity of narrowing on advance

Resiliency in Persons Experiencing Homelessness: A Concept Analysis Using the Evolutionary Framework.

INTRODUCTION: Homelessness is a critical societal issue, with those affected facing disproportionate chronic and acute health conditions. At the core of understanding their experiences is the concept of resiliency. Understanding resiliency in homelessness is crucial because it highlights the dynamic interplay between inherent qualities and external challenges, underscoring the need to reassess societal value judgements and inform nursing practices in research, education and advocacy. AIM: This paper aims to conduct a comprehensive concept analysis to propose a revised definition of resiliency

Enteral Nutrition for Older Adults in Healthcare Communities.

Older adults living in healthcare communities (HCCs) have multiple comorbidities and are at increased risk of malnutrition and unintended weight loss. Aging affects nearly every system as well as body composition and structure, causing physiological changes that can affect nutrition status. A significant percentage (56%) of residents who live in nursing facilities require extensive help to eat and have dental problems such as ill-fitting dentures, missing teeth, and swallowing problems, which can lead to inadequate caloric intake and unintended weight loss. Alzheimer disease or dementia is pre

Being active supports client control over health care.

The purpose of this study was to identify how healthcare clients achieve and maintain a sense of control over their health. The literature review conducted refers to: (i) key definitions of control, (ii) locus of control, and (iii) control and wellbeing. Participants with a range of acute and chronic health conditions and who had been hospitalised at some point were selected for the study. Symbolic interactionism (Blumer, 1969) and modified grounded theory of Strauss & Corbin (1998) provided the frameworks for this study. During the six month study period, data were collected from sixty partic

Psychological Flexibility as a Mediator Between Spiritual Coping and End-of-Life Care Attitudes in ICU Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses frequently encounter ethical dilemmas, patient death and emotional distress, which can shape attitudes towards end-of-life care. Spiritual coping and psychological flexibility may support nurses' well-being and caregiving behaviour, but the mechanisms by which these factors affect ICU nurses' attitudes towards end-of-life care remain underexplored, particularly in Eastern cultural contexts. AIMS: To examine associations between spiritual coping, psychological flexibility and attitudes towards end-of-life care among ICU nurses, and to test whether p

The development of evidence-based nursing.

This paper argues that the current conception of evidence-based medicine has its limitations in the promotion of research which effects the quality of service in any health care system. It also poses something of a difficulty for the development of evidence-based nursing in particular. This paper advocates the more broad based concept of evidence-based practice and discusses its potential for addressing theory/practice problems and the uptake of nursing research. The broader conceptualization of evidence-based practice focuses on the integration of available evidence and the tacit knowledge of

Nursing-Based Dysrhythmia Detection on a Dedicated Stroke Unit Using a Unit-Based Cardiac Telemetry Monitoring System.

BACKGROUND: Acute stroke care includes cardiac rhythm monitoring in the first 24 hours. The method of monitoring varies, as do the reported findings. The nurses' role in this process can be intensive, including primary response and review of all data. Competency is critical as the acute stroke setting can be associated with life-threatening dysrhythmias as well as the detection of atrial fibrillation that affects therapy. Limited studies exist to evaluate the effectiveness of a unit-based cardiac monitoring system for which the bedside nurse has primary responsibility. OBJECTIVE: The goal was

Perceptions and Experiences of Methadone Maintenance Treatment: A Qualitative Descriptive Research Study.

Over the past 10 years, there has been a consistent increase in opioid use, which has resulted in an increase in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT). With retention in MMT being a key factor, to understand the process of retention, it is important to better understand individual perceptions and experiences. Little research in Ottawa, Ontario, has addressed the perspective of MMT from people enrolled in MMT; therefore, nursing-based research was undertaken. The objective was to understand the process and experiences associated with MMT from the perspective of persons who are enrolled in treat

Managing pleural effusions.

Malignant pleural effusions result from advanced metastatic disease and can have a devastating effect on patients and their families. The insertion of a tunneled pleural catheter, such as a Tenckhoff catheter, is a treatment option for this patient population. Nurses play a significant role during the patient's journey with the disease process, providing the skills necessary to promote self-care and autonomy, resulting in improved quality of life. In this article, the authors discuss the nursing care of patients who have a Tenckhoff catheter.
